The wish (from the validated fiction). Purity/contamination's wish: to be clean — a dreaded defilement undone. Its wish-valence guard: purity is earned through a real cleansing at real cost. On the page (Dracula, #345), the defiled are restored only by a costly, bloody cleansing — Lucy by the staking ("the work of her destruction was yielded as a privilege to the one best entitled to it"), Mina's brand lifted only at Dracula's death ("the snow is not more stainless than her forehead! The curse has passed away!"), Quincey paying with his life.
The hinge: the dark twin grants slot 3 while skipping slot 2. Purity's slot 2 is the real cleansing — confronting and removing an actual defilement at cost. The recruitment move keeps the slot-3 payoff (you are clean, undefiled, pure) but skips the cleansing: it grants purity by blood/birth and maintains it not by any cleansing but by excluding a contaminant whose contamination is declared irreversible and manufactured (mere presence = defilement). Counterfeit purity: the clean identity without the cleansing — the badge of "we are pure" pointed outward as the purge of an out-group.
The counterfeit in the wild. The documented ancestor is Madison Grant's The Passing of the Great Race (1916, Project Gutenberg #68185) — the eugenics text reportedly called "my Bible" by Hitler, the forerunner of racial-hygiene rhetoric. It manufactures the contamination as irreversible (the one-drop reversion): "the result of the mixture of two races, in the long run, gives us a race reverting to the more ancient, generalized and lower type. The cross between a white man and an Indian is an Indian; … and the cross between any of the three European races and a Jew is a Jew." And it supplies the counterfeit cleansing — purity maintained not by any work but by exclusion: "a natural antipathy which serves to maintain the purity of type. … Races must be kept apart by artificial devices of this sort or they ultimately amalgamate and in the offspring the more generalized or lower type prevails."
The contemporary form. The present-day vector is the purity spiral / "great replacement" / "poisoning the blood" rhetoric — the same grant of purity-by-blood and the same manufactured, irreversible contaminant, with one darker turn Grant's static text only implies: when contamination is framed as irreversible and one-drop, the contaminant can never be cleansed, only excluded or eliminated — the eliminationist terminus.
Boundary — purity's face, not redemption's, not belonging's. The payoff identity sold is "I am clean / undefiled" (freedom from contamination), not "I am forgiven" (redemption — a guilt atoned; the defiled here are victims, not sinners) and not "I belong" (belonging — a place in the in-group). Belonging's wound is placelessness and its remedy is admission; purity's wound is defilement and its remedy is the purge — separable gradients (a bundle in Metamorphosis, where the family runs purity and Gregor runs belonging-loss, not a fusion).
The dual-use point. Purity's benign face is the real cleansing of a real defilement at real cost (medicine; genuine harm-removal; the costly restoration of Dracula's victims). Its counterfeit grants the feeling of being clean/pure without any cleansing — purity by blood, maintained by scapegoating — and points it outward as the exclusion or elimination of a manufactured contaminant. Same wish (to be undefiled), opposite value-flow.
Value-flow gate (subjective, per the README). Benign when the purity-wish enables real cleansing of real contamination (you treat the disease, you remove the actual harm). Dark — recruitment — when the badge "we are pure / they are the contamination" substitutes for any cleansing and licenses the exclusion, expulsion, or elimination of an out-group cast as the defilement.
Verdict. Purity/contamination's counterfeit is shown on a page (Grant). With three maximally-different specimens (Dracula, The Metamorphosis, Naaman — the third isolating the engine in the ritual register, where Levitical impurity is explicitly non-moral, controlling the belonging-adjacency the second flagged), fillable slots, a wish-valence guard, and this counterfeit shown, purity/contamination cleared every promotion gate and is a confirmed engine in the README (2026-05-25). It is the first prevention-pole engine (undo a dreaded state, vs the others' approach to a wished identity).
