The bead. Ten people who each got away with a killing the law could not touch are lured to an island and executed one by one by an unseen judge — the guilty, at last, getting exactly what they deserved.
Engines
- order/legibility · content · also-runs · ~ — the whodunit frame: an impossible disappearing-murderer puzzle. But the click is withheld to the post-mortem confession (Wargrave's message in the bottle), so the puzzle is the vehicle, not the payoff — the reader's satisfaction is the comeuppance, not the deduction.
The bundle. Single dominant wish (the just-deserts), wrapped in a mystery frame — which is why the order/legibility tag is an also-runs, not the spine.
Dual-use read. The clean counterfeit belongs to the gap-engine below (just-deserts manufactured against a scapegoat — the lynch-mob register), not to a confirmed one; order/legibility's conspiracy-counterfeit is present only in the frame.
Verdict — COVERAGE GAP flagged. The spine wish — justice / comeuppance, the third-party satisfaction of seeing the guilty punished — is not cleanly any of the fifteen. It is distinct from:
- unleashing — no protagonist's restrained capacity is discharged; the punisher is an external agent and the reader is a spectator, not the avenger.
- purity/contamination — the targets carry moral guilt (deeds done), not non-moral defilement; this is desert, not cleansing.
- order/legibility — the puzzle is the wrapper; the payoff is the scales balancing, not the world made legible.
Flagged for slot-test as justice / comeuppance (third-party just-deserts) — also a drivermap candidate, so a top-selling mystery independently confirms the predicted gap. Its likely counterfeit (the dark twin to test): manufactured guilt + mob-justice / the show-trial — desert asserted against a scapegoat without a real verdict. Since: justice/comeuppance resolved as a solvent — the genuine gradient isolates, but its counterfeit decomposes (purity-scapegoating + unleashing-grievance) and its payoff is an externally-adjudicated verdict, so it is named honestly but kept out of the engine table.
Evidence. ~ reviewed — from a reading; the value is the negative result (the just-deserts wish resists the catalog).
