The reading
The bead. A prince returns to claim his father's throne and the mantle of a nation's protector — and must prove the inheritance is his to carry.
Engines
- legacy/transcendence · content · spine · ~ — the throne of Wakanda and the mantle of the Black Panther, passed down the royal line; the ancestral plane where kings rejoin their fathers; T'Challa carrying — and questioning — T'Chaka's legacy. The payout is the inheritance claimed and made worthy.
- belonging · content · also-runs · ~ — Wakanda as nation-as-family: Shuri, Ramonda, the Dora Milaje, the tribes; the hero embedded in a people, not a lone vigilante.
- apotheosis · content · also-runs · ~ — the heart-shaped herb confers the Black Panther's enhanced power; the ritual ascension to more-than-human.
The bundle. The throne bundle — an inherited mantle (legacy) carried on behalf of a people (belonging) and empowered by ritual ascension (apotheosis). Homecoming was considered and cut: T'Challa's return to be crowned reads as legacy (claiming the throne) more than reunion (returning to a prior place, refusing the new), so it folds into the spine rather than tagging separately. A clean three, not four.
Dual-use read. Legacy's counterfeit (the "your bloodline endures" pitch) is present, but the sharper read is Killmonger: he embodies the liberation register run dark — his grievance ("bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped from the ships") is treated by the film as just, his method (seize power, arm the world) as monstrous. The film hands a real liberation-wish to the antagonist and asks the hero to absorb the cause while rejecting the violence — single-artifact dual-use, the villain's wish half-validated. Per the Lolita discipline, Killmonger's liberation is his goal, not the work's clean payout to the viewer, so it is discussed here, not tagged.
Verdict. A three-engine entry (legacy + belonging + apotheosis) — the superhero bundle stacking past a single engine, though it sits at three, not the four-plus of the finale. The Killmonger liberation-register is the card's richest dual-use, not a fourth tag.
Discriminator note. Per route 3 sub-variants A + B, the heart-shaped herb (A) and vibranium-suit (B) supply impunity-shape mechanisms — but T'Challa runs partial-installation like Cap: he gets the enhanced body and the kinetic-absorption suit, but he gets hurt, is nearly killed by Killmonger, and the wish-payout is the inheritance claimed and made worthy (legacy), not acts-without-typical-consequence (impunity). Black Panther is route-3 sub-variant-A-and-B partial-installation case (the mechanisms are present; impunity doesn't claim spine).
