The bead. The reader gets the wish that one's worst trait is not a verdict but a not-yet — a thing you slowly build your way out of, season by season, until you are the better self you were promised to become.
Engines
- mastery · content · spine · ~ — Each sister is held back not by the world but by an unbuilt faculty — Jo's temper, Amy's vanity, Meg's discontent — and the book is the long acquisition of the capability to govern it. The frame is explicit: the daughters must "fight their bosom enemies bravely, and conquer themselves." And the release is built, not granted — Mrs. March: "never get tired of trying, and never think it is impossible to conquer your fault... it often takes us all our lives to conquer them."
The bundle. Nearly pure spine; the domestic warmth and homecoming-of-the-father beats are scaffolding for the central skill-build.
Dual-use read. Mastery's counterfeit is the makeover — capability conferred (a transformation, a windfall, an inheritance) rather than earned through drilled effort. Little Women refuses the counterfeit: progress is measured in relapses and slow re-tries, the temper still flares years on, and the becoming is never finished. It is the bright pole.
Verdict. A textbook mastery engine — the reader's payout is the felt certainty that effortful self-government compounds into a finer person.
