A three-position framing that refuses both the doomer pause-or-shutdown move and Andreessen's accelerationist defection-from-precaution: dangers behind, multiple paths ahead — some good, some bad — and a defensive/decentralized/differential/democratic acceleration ("d/acc") that picks the good paths by routing through defense-favoring technology rather than concentrated power.

Structurally a cluster-bridging position, not a third pole on the bistable-braid spectrum.
Dual-use read. Buterin's eight-position compatibility list (e/acc, EA, libertarian, Pluralist, public-health, blockchain, solarpunk, lunarpunk) operationalizes the cluster-bridging function — d/acc claims compatibility with every adjacent subculture rather than distinguishing itself. The impunity-leg's explicit refusal of the cluster-standard concentrated-power-grab is the position's substantive contribution; the apotheosis-leg's cosmic-flourishing frame (brightest star + 2-billion-year humanity) imports the cluster's pure-counterfeit-equivalent register intact, with mind-upload-as-data-backups as the only register-shift.

Verdict. TESCREAL cluster's d/acc cluster-bridging position — refines the bistable-braid framing to spectrum-with-bridges: pole-uniformity strands at the endpoints (doomer + e/acc), per-leg-pole-mixing bridges in the middle (d/acc; existential-optimism queued).

The evidence
Published November 27, 2023, six weeks after Andreessen's Techno-Optimist Manifesto (October 16, 2023). Buterin introduces d/acc (defensive / decentralization / differential / democracy acceleration) as a third position between the e/acc accelerationist pole (Andreessen) and the doomer pause/shutdown pole (Yudkowsky+Soares 2025). All four gravitational-center legs fill, at mixed registers across legs — breaking the within-strand pole-uniformity the original bistable-braid framing assumed.
The three-position framing
"Anti-technology view: safety behind, dystopia ahead. / Accelerationist view: dangers behind, utopia ahead. / My view: dangers behind, but multiple paths forward ahead: some good, some bad." (l. 47)
"My own feelings about techno-optimism are warm, but nuanced. I believe in a future that is vastly brighter than the present thanks to radically transformative technology, and I believe in humans and humanity. I reject the mentality that the best we should try to do is to keep the world roughly the same as today but with less greed and more public healthcare. However, I think that not just magnitude but also direction matters." (l. 31-36)
The essay names Andreessen's manifesto and the OpenAI dispute as the inflection point.
Apotheosis (spine)
Brain-computer interface + mind-upload as the defensive d/acc-version of transcendence:
"Later stages of such a roadmap admittedly get weird. In addition to brain-computer interfaces, there are various paths to improving our brains directly through innovations in biology. An eventual further step, which merges both paths, may involve uploading our minds to run on computers directly. This would also be the ultimate d/acc for physical security: protecting ourselves from harm would no longer be a challenging problem of protecting inevitably-squishy human bodies, but rather a much simpler problem of making data backups." Apotheosis fills at the cluster's accelerationist-pole-equivalent register — Buterin shares Andreessen's vision of cosmic-scale human flourishing. The d/acc-distinctive register is defensive route to the same destination (mind-upload as data backups) rather than direct transcendence-of-limits.

The defensive-vs-offensive classification:

The slot-3 is democratic governance preserved — not defection from precaution as moral imperative (Andreessen), not shut it down with nuclear treaty enforcement (Yudkowsky+Soares):
"A defense-favoring world is a better world, for many reasons. First of course is the direct benefit of safety: fewer people die, less economic value gets destroyed, less time is wasted on conflict. What is less appreciated though is that a defense-favoring world makes it easier for healthier, more open and more freedom-respecting forms of governance to thrive." (l. 529-534)

d/acc is structurally a cluster-bridging position, not a third pole on the bistable-braid spectrum. The bistable-braid framing is the special case for canonical-pair moments where both visible strands have within-leg pole-uniformity; when a third position with per-leg pole-mixing exists, the cluster's pole-space is spectrum-with-bridges, not a bistable pair.
