- belonging · content · spine · ~ — itinerant ranch hands are the structural void: rootless, friendless, "the loneliest guys in the world." George and Lennie run against it by being kin to each other — they have each other when no one else does — and the dream of the little farm is the place where they would finally belong. The whole book is built on that ache for a place and a we; it is the dark pole, the belonging withheld at the end.
The bundle. Single-engine; the farm-dream is belonging's promised release, never delivered.
Dual-use read. Belonging's counterfeit is the bought membership — the badge of being-one-of-us paid for in conformity rather than earned in recognition-as-kin. The book does not run the counterfeit; it is the bright pole, mourning real belonging by destroying it.
Verdict. Belonging in its starkest negative print: the wish named so plainly because the story exists to take it away.
