The Goonies

reviewed dir. Richard Donner · 1985 · film

The reading

The bead. A gang of misfit kids whose homes are about to be bulldozed follow a pirate's treasure map through booby-trapped tunnels and save their neighborhood — one last adventure together.

Engines

The bundle. The kids'-adventure bundle: belonging (the gang) on a treasure-hunt (order/legibility) for the abundance that saves their world — the misfit crew's loyalty the through-line.

Dual-use read. Order/legibility's counterfeit is the decoder-fantasy (a clever map explains everything); The Goonies keeps it benign — the map is real, the method honest, the treasure earned through the gauntlet. Abundance's counterfeit (the windfall that fixes everything) is softened by being shared and in service of the homes, not hoarded.

Verdict. A belonging-spined kids' adventure — the found-family crew, the decoded treasure-hunt, the windfall that saves the neighborhood.
