The bead. A 1973 short philosophical-fiction work depicting the utopian city of Omelas during its summer festival — and revealing that the city's prosperity depends on the perpetual misery of a single child kept in a basement closet, which every citizen knows about and accepts as the price — and the few who, knowing, walk away from the city, alone, into the dark. The catalog's cleanest specimen of single-engine refusal at short-story scale.
Engines

Slot-1 (the imposed Omelas-contract: enjoy this beauty in full awareness that it requires the child's suffering); slot-2 (the walker's knowing-departure, in full acceptance that the alternative-place may not exist); slot-3 (walking-away as the engine's consummation — no destination promised, but the refusal complete). The refusal is itself the liberation; the destination is unknown and may not exist.
The bundle. Single-engine, deliberately so. Le Guin's structural commitment is to give the engine no other work — the moral weight rests entirely on the walker's choice. Slot-proven specimen of a refusal-mode that the existing refusal-catalog does not perfectly fit: not antagonist-mode (the city is not dramatized as the engine's enemy — Le Guin's prose is at pains to make Omelas believable as actually good); not adjacent-mode (no other engine fills the void); not model-refusal (the work operates within the wish-fulfillment frame). This is a fourth single-engine refusal mode: refusal of the contract while staying in the frame, where the engine runs at slot-3 by refusing a prior contract that the rest of the catalog accepts. Worth adding to the refusal-catalog.
Dual-use read. Substantively enabling; the work has functioned as a moral-touchstone for half a century. The story's load-bearing claim — that some social goods are illegitimate at their cost — is a serious moral position the work holds open without resolving. The slot-2 deficit risk: the aestheticization of walking-away as identity-purchase (the trust-fund-radical posture; the I-saw-through-the-system signaling) — a counterfeit reading some critics have advanced. Le Guin's prose explicitly walks back this reading by emphasizing the walkers' destination is unknown to the writer, and they walk alone. Value-flow: clean enabling at the substantive content.
The famous N. K. Jemisin response. Jemisin's "The Ones Who Stay and Fight" (2018) is the canonical cluster-adjacent-narrative-refusal of Omelas's premise — argues the walker's choice is insufficient, that staying-and-fighting is the substantive moral response. Cupel's catalog already has Emergency Skin running adjacent moves; Jemisin-Omelas would be worth adding to extend the conversation.
Verdict. Foundational specimen of single-engine refusal-of-the-contract, slot-proven at the philosophical-fiction-short-story register. Identifies a fourth single-engine refusal mode the existing refusal catalog should incorporate. Le Guin's structural move is methodologically pure.
