The bead. The unremarkable boy nobody chose is singled out and loved by the most desirable person alive — and the reader gets to be the one who is wanted.
Engines
- being-desired · content · spine · ~ — Patroclus is exiled, clumsy, disgraced, the overlooked foil; the whole arc releases when Achilles, best of the Greeks and most beautiful, chooses him over everyone. The payout is being seen and wanted by the unattainable beloved, not Patroclus's own achievement.
The bundle. A single bright engine: the wish to be chosen by the one everyone wants.
Dual-use read. The counterfeit of being-desired is possession dressed as love — being wanted only as a trophy or instrument. The book does not run that; the wanting is mutual and earned, the bright pole.
Verdict. A clean being-desired spine — exemplary of the engine, not a hybrid.
