The move. cupel coverage's max-bundle leaderboard shows which works run the most engines. The bundle-shape catalog asks the inverted question: which engine-combinations recur as recognizable shapes, and which shapes are structurally possible but under-represented? Per-shape: present specimens, structural rationale, and specific candidate works that would fill the under-represented bundles.
A bundle shape is not just a co-occurrence; it's a recurring combinatorial structure where the engines reinforce each other in a culturally-recognized pattern. The romance bundle is a shape; "two engines happened to both appear in this work" is not.
Well-represented shapes (the canonical bundles)
Romance bundle
Engines: being-desired + abundance + protective-partner (often manifests as apotheosis or mastery in the partner). Specimens: Twilight, ACOTAR, Fifty Shades, Fourth Wing. Structural rationale: the wish to be wanted-as-you-are (being-desired) carries the wish to be materially-cared-for (abundance) and the wish for the desirer to be capable of protecting (apotheosis/mastery). The three engines lock together in the romantasy / contemporary romance / paranormal romance markets.
Quest-fellowship bundle
Engines: belonging (fellowship) + mastery (the protagonist's skill-acquisition) + legacy/transcendence (the quest's stakes for the future). Specimens: LOTR, Lightning Thief, Stranger Things, much epic fantasy. Structural rationale: the band-of-companions makes the quest emotionally consequential (belonging), the quest requires the protagonist to grow into the task (mastery), and the stakes are framed as preventing a permanent loss to the world (legacy).
Conversion bundle
Engines: redemption + belonging + new-self emerging. Specimens: A Christmas Carol, Narnia. Structural rationale: the wrong-self atones (redemption) and is welcomed back into the social order they had excluded themselves from (belonging) as a remade self.
Hero's journey bundle (the Campbell template)
Engines: belonging-loss → mastery → apotheosis → homecoming/reunion. Specimens: Star Wars (original trilogy), much Joseph-Campbell-pattern fiction. Structural rationale: the hero leaves the ordinary world (belonging-loss), undergoes trials and trains (mastery), achieves ascended capability or power (apotheosis), and returns home transformed (homecoming/reunion). The classical template; recurs across cultures with backing variations.
Underdog-sports bundle
Engines: repricing + belonging + mastery. Specimens: The Mighty Ducks, Remember the Titans, Cool Runnings, much sports-fiction. Structural rationale: the team is dismissed (repricing slot 1), forms into a real bond (belonging), trains into capability (mastery), and the win or moral-victory revalues them.
Detective-puzzle bundle
Engines: order/legibility primarily, often solo. Specimens: Holmes corpus, Gold-Bug, the Christie tradition. Structural rationale: the engine runs strongly enough alone that the "bundle" is single-engine. Sometimes pairs with belonging (the Holmes-Watson partnership) or impunity (the criminal's freedom from the check the detective dispels), but the spine carries solo.
Solarpunk gestalt bundle
Engines: liberation/autonomy (vocational redirection or sage-pole) + belonging at cultural-system scope + caretaking-as-reciprocity. Specimens: Chambers (Monk & Robot), Le Guin (Always Coming Home), some Jemisin (Emergency Skin partial). Structural rationale: the wish for a world configured so kindness works runs as combined freedom-from-extractive-frame + community-at-scope + reciprocal care. Cross-references the vocation-redirection candidate engine.
Climate-political bundle
Engines: liberation/autonomy at solidarity scope + caretaking-of-the-future + virtue of defeat at collective-political scope. Specimens: Robinson's Ministry for the Future; parts of Wallace-Wells's Uninhabitable Earth; partial in Parable of the Sower. Structural rationale: the climate condition does not afford individual liberation, so the engine has to operate at collective scope, paired with care for unborn generations and the preemptive virtue-of-defeat stance toward already-arrived defeats.
Under-represented shapes (the directed-acquisition queue)
Care-witness bundle
Engines: caretaking/being-needed + virtue of defeat + legacy/transcendence. Structural rationale: the carer who tends across hopeless circumstances and is remembered for it. The bond is to someone the carer cannot save; the virtue-of-defeat is the doing-anyway; the legacy is the witness preserved. Candidate specimens:
- Tolstoy's "Master and Man" — the merchant Brekhunov dies sheltering Nikita his servant; runs caretaking + virtue of defeat in the death scene.
- Hospice and end-of-life memoir — Atul Gawande's Being Mortal (non-fiction); much hospice literature.
- Toni Morrison's Beloved runs this at extreme valence (Sethe's protection-care across an irreparable past).
- Marilynne Robinson's Gilead — the dying minister's letter to his son is care + legacy as one motion.
Exile-and-return bundle
Engines: homecoming/reunion + repricing + redemption. Structural rationale: the dispossessed who returns transformed; the home is changed and the returner is changed; the repricing is the returner's revaluation in the home that did not previously honor them. Candidate specimens:
- Alex Haley's Roots — diaspora-return across colonial rupture; the catalog's canonical Black-American specimen for this shape.
- Yaa Gyasi's Homegoing — multi-generational repricing-and-return across the Ghana-America axis.
- The Color Purple (Walker) — Celie's return-to-self carries repricing and a partial redemption.
- Pachinko (Lee) — multi-generational migrant family; some return-via-grandchildren beats.
Mystic-ascension bundle
Engines: liberation/autonomy at sage-pole + mastery (yogic/contemplative discipline) + apotheosis (mystical realization). Structural rationale: the wisdom-tradition arc — the practitioner trains, attains mystical-realization, achieves the freedom that comes with it. Distinct from the romantasy apotheosis bundle by the internality of the ascent and the spiritual register. Candidate specimens:
- The Bhagavad Gita — already in catalog; Krishna's discourse runs the bundle compactly.
- Hesse's Siddhartha — the canonical Western-literary specimen of the bundle.
- Maugham's The Razor's Edge — Larry Darrell's arc (already noted in candidate-vocation-redirection slot-test exclusions).
- Some Bhakti poetry (Mirabai, Kabir at the bhakti pole).
- The Tao Te Ching's sage-portrait chapters.
Reckoning-without-redemption bundle
Engines: virtue of defeat + caretaking/being-needed + legacy/transcendence (often as personal-archive). Structural rationale: the protagonist faces a life they cannot redeem; the meaning emerges from honest reckoning + the small bonds + what survives of the life into memory. Modern-litfic spine. Candidate specimens:
- Stoner (Williams 1965) — the canonical specimen; runs virtue of defeat + a near-belonging-refusal + a small legacy.
- Olive Kitteridge (Strout 2008) — the cantankerous protagonist's reckoning over a community-life.
- Lila (Robinson 2014) — slot-tested 2026-05-29 against vocation-redirection candidate and excluded; now confirmed canonical specimen of the reckoning-without-redemption bundle running at the literary-fiction register with a partial-redemption fourth leg. Card: Lila.
- Late Tolstoy ("The Death of Ivan Ilyich") — the dying man's recognition of his life's emptiness, partially redeemed by his servant's care.
Vocational-quietude bundle
Engines: caretaking/being-needed + belonging at small scale + mastery (vocational rather than heroic). Structural rationale: the small life valued; the bond to a specific other; the practice as the vocation. Distinct from the conversion bundle by the absence of redemption (no wrong-self being atoned). Candidate specimens:
- Charlotte's Web — already in catalog; carries the bundle clean.
- The Little Prince (Saint-Exupéry) — care + the rose + the fox.
- Annie Dillard's Pilgrim at Tinker Creek — vocational attention to a creek.
- Wendell Berry's Port William fiction — rural-vocational quietude as the wish.
Worldbuilding-immersion bundle
Engines: belonging at cultural-system scope + abundance at imaginative scope (the world is full and varied) + legacy/transcendence (the world has history that outlasts characters). Structural rationale: the wish to dwell in a world rather than to follow a plot. The engine-payout is to the reader who wants to inhabit the world long after the story ends. Heavy in epic fantasy and certain SF. Candidate specimens:
- Tolkien's Middle-earth (LOTR runs this strongly).
- Le Guin's Earthsea — partial specimen; Le Guin AC at the anthropological pole.
- Pratchett's Discworld — comic-flavored specimen.
- Banks's Culture novels — SF specimen at the post-scarcity pole.
Trauma-decoding bundle
Engines: order/legibility (trauma-as-illegible-experience) + virtue of defeat (the survivor's stance) + caretaking/being-needed (the witness or self-tending). Structural rationale: the survivor's reconstruction of what happened; the meaning made from the unbearable; the care-for-the-younger-self or the others-similarly-wounded. Candidate specimens:
- Carmen Maria Machado's In the Dream House — the canonical specimen.
- Trauma and Recovery (Judith Herman, 1992) — non-fiction; the framework text.
- Maggie Nelson's The Argonauts — partial.
- Many post-MeToo memoirs.
Anti-trafficking-counterfeit bundle (the romance-trap counterfeit cluster)
Engines: being-desired + redemption — counterfeits running in parallel. Specimens (counterfeit-leaning): Certain dark-romance subgenres ("the abuser can be saved by love"); the Beauty and the Beast counterfeit reading; some 80s romance. Structural rationale: the being-desired wish is fulfilled by a desirer who needs to be redeemed; the heroine's love is the supposed atonement. Carries serious dual-use risk; the engine works only if the redemption is genuinely earned (Beauty and the Beast at its enabling pole; counterfeit when the abuse is romanticized as the path).
Bearing-witness bundle (2026-05-29 addition, from the Maus card)
Engines: virtue-of-defeat + the-double-life-of-the-witness-once-removed + care-for-the-record (caretaking redirected from person to testimony). Specimens: Art Spiegelman, Maus (1986/1991) — second-generation-Holocaust-testimony at graphic-novel register. Knausgaard's My Struggle (2009-2011) runs an adjacent radical-self-disclosure variant where the witness IS the participant rather than once-removed. Lawrence Wright's Going Clear (2013) and the NXIVM journalism corpus run the bundle at investigative-rendering register. Toni Morrison's Beloved (1987) runs the bundle at literary-fiction register where the historical-trauma rendering is the work. Structural rationale: the bundle handles material the conventional engines cannot — historical-trauma at scope that cannot be redeemed (virtue-of-defeat), where the witness is positioned-after-the-event and must render-rather-than-fix (the-double-life-of-the-witness-once-removed), and where the engine's caretaking-mode operates at the care-for-the-record register rather than the dyadic-personal register. Methodologically distinct from the reckoning-without-redemption bundle (Stoner, Lila, etc.) by the witness-once-removed component — the protagonist is not the one who experienced the trauma but the one rendering it. Holes: the bundle has been partially-named across multiple cupel cards but not formally inventoried until now. Worth a separate per-engine treatment in Backings inventory for virtue-of-defeat at the historical-trauma-rendering backing.
Oath-binding-and-trauma-integration bundle (2026-05-29 addition, from the Sanderson Cosmere batch)
Engines: mastery + virtue-of-defeat + apotheosis, with mastery's slot-2 made operationally explicit via vow-as-binding-cost mechanism. Specimens: Sanderson, Words of Radiance (2014) — Kaladin's Third-Ideal struggle, Shallan's identity-fracture integration; Sanderson, Oathbringer (2017) — Dalinar's Rift reckoning + Bondsmith vow. Both at epic-fantasy register; the bundle scales upward from the literary-fiction reckoning-without-redemption bundle (Stoner, Lila) with substantive depth preserved. Structural rationale: the bundle uses Sanderson's hard-magic vow-as-condition mechanic to operationalize what literary fiction does internally — the protagonist's spoken commitment binds the magical-power, making mastery-counterfeit structurally impossible within the system (a Knight Radiant cannot fake the Ideals; the power would not respond). This is a literary argument against the cluster-catalog's mastery-counterfeit specimens (Tomassi's frame-control; Greene's 48 Laws; Robbins's NAC) at the metaphorical-fantasy-system scope. Related to the reckoning-without-redemption bundle (literary fiction register) and to the quest-fellowship bundle (epic fantasy register); the oath-binding-bundle is the operational version where the slot-2 work has explicit magical-power consequences.
Recruitment-cluster bundle (2026-05-29 addition)
Engines (counterfeit pole): apotheosis + impunity + order/legibility + at least one domain-specific counterfeit (mastery for self-help / seduction-mastery / startup-canon; purity + security for protected-world; belonging + redemption for cult). Plus a closed in-group lexicon. Specimens: see four sibling cluster docs. Two slot-proven (protected-world, seduction-mastery), three wikipedia-grounded (self-help, startup-canon, cult), one narrative-mode (romance-trap, distinct shape). Structural rationale: the three gravitational-center engines' counterfeits form a self-reinforcing recruitment-loop where the elevation justifies the exemption, the exemption is necessary because the framework's revealed order says conventional rules don't apply, and the revealed order is evidenced by the elevated buyers' success-stories. Mutual reinforcement via slot-2 deficits as evidence. Distinct from positive bundles: the recruitment-cluster bundle is a counterfeit phenomenon by structural definition. The romance bundle (being-desired + abundance + protective-partner) and the romance-trap cluster (being-desired-counterfeit + redemption-counterfeit + apotheosis-counterfeit) are the same engines at opposite poles — the cluster-vs-bundle distinction may always be value-flow-grade rather than engine-identity.
Founder-canon bundle (positive-pole; subset of startup-canon cluster)
Engines (enabling pole specimens): apotheosis + mastery + occasional legacy/transcendence (the company-as-lasting-thing). Specimens: Shoe Dog (Knight 2016 — Nike origin memoir at the enabling pole), Built to Last (Collins & Porras 1994 — long-lived-company study), The Innovator's Dilemma (Christensen 1997 — the structural rather than heroic story). Structural rationale: the same engine-set the startup-canon cluster runs at counterfeit can run at enabling when the founder's actual long-term work (building things that genuinely matter, learning, accepting feedback) is honored rather than bypassed. Shoe Dog is the cleanest contemporary specimen — Knight's account names the years of obscure tedious labor that the cluster-mode versions skip. Holes: the non-heroic-founder shelf (engineering-craftsmanship memoirs, the founder-as-anonymous-team-member specimens, the family-business multi-generational specimens) is sparse in the catalog and in popular culture's available reading.
Lifestyle-design bundle (counterfeit-leaning; subset of self-help cluster)
Engines (mostly counterfeit pole, partially enabling): liberation/autonomy at the escape-the-corporate-cage register + mastery + apotheosis (new-rich-as-class) + impunity (exempt-from-traditional-obligation). Specimens: 4-Hour Workweek (Ferriss 2007), FI/RE corpus (Mr. Money Mustache blog, Your Money or Your Life Robin & Dominguez 1992 / 2018), digital-nomad ecosystem (Tropical MBA, Nomad List). Structural rationale: the lifestyle-design bundle was previously not named in the catalog; it surfaces during the self-help cluster slot-test as a four-leg shape running liberation/autonomy as the cluster's lead. Distinct from the rest of the self-help cluster (which runs apotheosis-led) — the lifestyle-design strand uses liberation as the bait for the rest of the cluster legs. Note: Your Money or Your Life is closer to the enabling version of the bundle than 4HWW — Dominguez's framework was rooted in his own ascetic monastic-economic life and includes substantive financial-independence prescriptions. The cluster's enabling presence in this bundle is real.
Stoic-influencer bundle (consumption-layer specimen of the self-help cluster)
Engines: mastery + apotheosis + virtue-of-defeat-trace + consumption-layer ritual. Specimens: Ryan Holiday's The Obstacle Is the Way (2014), Ego Is the Enemy (2016), The Daily Stoic (2016) + the Daily Stoic podcast / annual reading / memento-mori merchandise. Structural rationale: the Stoic-influencer bundle commodifies cupel's slot-proven Aurelius/Epictetus specimens (the source-tradition's substantive backing the wisdom-tradition entries already document) into a contemporary consumption-layer micro-purchase economy. Engine-shift between source and commodification: Aurelius's actual Stoic spine is liberation/autonomy (withdrawal-of-assent-to-judgment); Holiday's commercial-self-help spine is mastery (obstacle-conversion-as-trainable-skill). The bundle is partial-counterfeit at the framing — and engine-shifted from the source — but the underlying content has genuine value at the mastery-shape register.
Bundle entry revised 2026-06-05. The original "virtue-of-defeat + apotheosis + mastery, with virtue-of-defeat-at-head methodological complication" framing was retracted after Holiday primary-text probe showed mastery as spine and virtue-of-defeat as trace-in-Part-III. See The Obstacle Is the Way.
Structural meta-findings from the bundle-shape inventory
- Bundles split into positive-pole bundles and counterfeit clusters (2026-05-29 addition). The romance bundle (enabling co-occurrence) and the romance-trap cluster (counterfeit co-occurrence at the same engines) are at the opposite ends of the same engine-set. The bundle-vs-cluster distinction may always reduce to value-flow-grade. Open methodological question for the engine-model docs: should the catalog formally split bundles by pole, or treat bundles-and-clusters as the same object at different grades?
- Romance and quest bundles dominate the catalog. Both are well-explored; further additions in these shapes have diminishing returns relative to under-represented shapes.
- The reckoning-without-redemption and care-witness bundles are systematically under-represented. Both center middle-of-life, low-glamor, ongoing-circumstance protagonists — exactly the held-back conditions named in Held-back catalog as under-represented (mid-life, ongoing-care without resolution).
- The worldbuilding-immersion bundle is recognized but under-tagged in works/. Tolkien is slot-proven, but the bundle-shape itself isn't named; future entries should explicitly tag the bundle when it runs.
- Counterfeit bundles parallel positive bundles structurally. The counterfeit-cluster note already maps the protected-world / self-help / cult / romance-trap counterfeit bundles. Each positive bundle has a corresponding counterfeit shape; the bundle-shape catalog and the counterfeit-cluster catalog form complementary maps.
- Climate-era and digital-era bundles are emerging. The climate-political bundle is a new specimen (Robinson). A digital-condition bundle — likely liberation/autonomy at attention-economy held-back + order/legibility at structural-inquiry + virtue of defeat in self-implicated mode (Tolentino's structure) — may be coalescing as a distinct shape. Worth watching across more specimens.
Status
Per-shape inventory complete with named candidate specimens. The under-represented bundles form a directed-acquisition queue paralleling Backings inventory and Held-back catalog but operating on inter-engine combinations rather than intra-engine variation. The counterfeit-bundle parallels in Cluster catalog cover the negative-bundle space.
The inversion suite is now at four substantive documents (backings, held-back, refusal, bundle-shape) plus the cross-engine counterfeit-cluster note. Two remaining from the inversions index — layer catalog (consumption-vs-content) and payoff catalog (slot-3 consummation-shapes) — are lower priority and could come on demand.
