Methodology. Cupel's engines are wishes (more universal across cultures and eras); the backings — the slot-2 mechanism that makes each wish honest — are cultural-historical specifics that vary by tradition. The catalog currently encodes mostly Western-narrative-default backings (drawn from Greek epic, English novel, Hollywood film). Inverting and asking "where are the backing-shaped holes?" yields a directed research method:
- For each confirmed engine, list the backings present in the catalog (named with the slot-proven entry that grounds it).
- Sketch backings missing — backings that should exist by cross-engine analogy or known cultural traditions but aren't represented yet — and name the culture/tradition/work that would fill the hole.
- Flag candidate-engine signals — backings that don't fit any current engine cleanly. These are pressure-points where the taxonomy may need to grow.
Each hole is simultaneously (1) a directed acquisition pointer (specific texts to slot-test or read) and (2) a candidate-engine probe (does this backing match an existing engine or pressure for a new one?). The inventory's value is converting "broad coverage" into directed search.
This document is built per-engine. The deeply-analyzed engines have backings extracted from their slot-proven works/ dossiers with quote-grounded evidence; less-developed sections name the entries and leave the per-quote extraction for later.
liberation/autonomy
Slot-proven entries. A Doll's House (Ibsen), Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (Douglass).
Backings present (from the catalog):
- Decisive break-from-role — Nora forsakes home, husband, children, and security in one act; the door-slam consummates. Western 19c-Protestant individualist backing. (Doll's House ✓)
- Mortal-risk flight + testimony — physical escape ("hundred miles straight north"); the fugitive-and-witness mode; "Trust no man!"; the Covey-fight as precursor self-respect. American slave-narrative backing. (Frederick Douglass ✓)
- Contemplative-companioned un-resolution — sitting in the question without breaking out, alongside a companion who shares the question and does not become a guru or beloved; Dex returns into the world rather than away from it. Solarpunk contemplative backing. (Chambers Psalm/Crown-Shy ~) — Confirmed as a backing of liberation/autonomy, not a separate engine (tested against Lila and Convenience Store Woman; both fail decisive criteria — companion-as-beloved-AND-teacher in Lila; external-not-internal dissonance in Murata). Distinct from #4/#6/#7/#8 (those are internal-practice modes; this is external-company-without-practice).
- Non-attachment via karma yoga — moksha through right action without attachment to fruits; the cage is internal entanglement, not external imposition. Hindu wisdom-tradition backing. (Gita ~)
- Moral rejection of dystopia + flight — Jonas's rejection of the Sameness + escape with Gabriel. Dystopian-protest backing. (The Giver ~)
- Wu wei / alignment with the unforced way — the cage is the striving itself, released by patient unlearning of force ("doing nothing on purpose, there is nothing it does not do"). Taoist sage-pole backing. (Tao Te Ching ~)
- Nirvana / cessation of craving — the cage is the wanting-itself, released by the eightfold path; extinction of the wanting-self, distinct from non-attachment or alignment. Buddhist backing. (Dhammapada ~)
- Stoic inner citadel via withdrawal of assent — the cage is the giving of importance to what isn't yours; released by daily examination of the ruling principle. Roman/Hellenistic backing. Two specimens, distinct registers: imperial-notebook (Aurelius ~) and pedagogical-lecture by a freed slave (Epictetus ~).
- Indigenous reciprocity with land — liberation from the extractive / civilisation-virus frame via relationship to place rather than departure from it. Two specimens: Potawatomi reciprocity at lyrical-essay register (Sweetgrass ~, Honorable Harvest as the named cost) and Aboriginal Apalech genealogical-political critique ("The Sumerians started it. The Romans perfected it. The Anglosphere inherited it") at fragmentary-confrontational register (Sand Talk ~). Distinct from the sage-pole backings (4 / 6 / 7 / 8) — the cage here is collective and historical (civilisation), not personal-internal.
Backings missing (with where they'd come from):
- ~~Anarchist mutual-aid cooperation~~ — closed 2026-05-29. Le Guin's The Dispossessed (1974) is the catalog's first slot-proven specimen of anarcho-syndicalist cooperation as a liberation backing distinct from individual-break (Doll's House) and contemplative-companioned (Chambers Psalm). Anarres-Urras dual society; Shevek's choice to refuse both propertarian enclosure and Anarresti calcification; the ambiguous-utopia structure preserving the engine's wish without delivering it as deliverable. See The Dispossessed.
- Solidarity / collective action — liberation won together through worker uprising or slave revolt rather than individual flight or break. Hugo's Les Misérables, Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath (cupel has the latter as ~), Butler's Parable of the Sower.
- Fana / annihilation in divine love (Sufi) — liberation as ego dissolved in the beloved; distinct from the Stoic withdrawal and the Buddhist cessation. Rumi, Hafez.
- Existential authenticity (mid-20c European) — liberation as authentic choice in absurdity. Sartre's Nausea, Camus's The Stranger, de Beauvoir's The Ethics of Ambiguity.
- Anarchist mutual-aid cooperation — no master + active solidarity without the dystopian-collapse precondition. Le Guin's The Dispossessed (Project Gutenberg #42), Kropotkin's Mutual Aid (theory).
- Carnivalesque temporary inversion (Bakhtin's territory) — liberation as ritual, joyful, time-bound overturning rather than permanent break. Rabelais.
- Information-age jurisdictional-exit — liberation as exit from the nation-state itself (cryptography + capital mobility + the encrypted cybereconomy) rather than from a master, a role, or an internal cage; collective obligation re-coded as the cage. Counterfeit-leaning at the pure-counterfeit pole — the single exit-move voids the cost. Named (not yet slot-folded) by Davidson + Rees-Mogg's The Sovereign Individual (1997). See The Sovereign Individual.
Backings added 2026-06-05 (from the religious-canon density-test triple: Bible / Gita / Thomas dossiers):
- Gnostic-kingdom-within (freedom-from-external-religious-authority) (gnostic-Christian, 1st-2nd c. CE) — liberation as interiorizing the kingdom: salvation not in temple, not in institution, not in priesthood, but in the self-seeking-the-hidden-meaning. Distinct from #1 (Doll's House break-from-role — Thomas's interiorization is gnoseological not relational), #4 (Gita karma yoga — different mechanism: knowledge vs action-without-attachment), and #6/#7 (Tao wu wei + Buddhist cessation — Thomas retains seeking-discipline rather than releasing it). Specimen: Gospel of Thomas (Lambdin tr.) at The Gospel of Thomas; saying 3 "the kingdom is inside of you, and it is outside of you" + saying 39 (Pharisees took the keys of knowledge) + saying 14 (fasting/prayer/almsgiving will cause harm). Slot-proven via failed-canon anti-prediction test; the engine fires at gnostic-specialist-register strength.
Bhagavad-Gita dossier (The Bhagavad Gita) confirms backing #4 (karma yoga) at full-text density, with note: the Gita names three yogic paths to moksha (karma yoga + bhakti yoga + jnana yoga). Backing #4 captures only the karma-yoga register. The bhakti-yoga register (devotional liberation through divine love — Krishna directly loves the devotee at saying III.x onwards) and jnana-yoga register (liberation through knowledge of atman-Brahman identity) are adjacent backings that may warrant their own entries if either is slot-proven on a single-tradition-focused text. Queued.
Backings added 2026-05-29 (from the Lila + Convenience Store Woman slot-test and the self-help cluster batch):
- Settling-rather-than-fleeing (US literary, 21c) — autonomy kept available as condition that allows the staying to be a chosen-not-trapped condition. Liberation as the option-to-leave-preserved-while-not-leaving. Specimen: Marilynne Robinson Lila (2014). The Reverend's "I want you to have a train ticket in your hand" line is the engine's mechanism — autonomy as continuing condition rather than as exit. Distinct from #1 (Doll's House — actual break) and #4 (Gita — non-attachment to outcomes via practice). Slot-proven at the ~ reviewed tier via Lila.
- Liberation-into-vocational-essence (the inverted Doll's House) (Japanese 21c) — the imposed-normalcy frame falls away, the authentic vocational self emerges; the buyer-side throw-off is not from the vocation but from the imposition-that-says-it-isn't-a-vocation. Specimen: Sayaka Murata Convenience Store Woman (2016). Keiko's "convenience store animal" recognition is the engine's mechanism — same engine-shape as Nora's exit but in mirror-image: Nora leaves the imposed role; Keiko stays in the role and refuses the imposition. See Convenience Store Woman.
- Lifestyle-design escape-the-corporate-cage (US 21c self-help-cluster strand) — liberation as a systemizable re-architecting of work-life-ratio. Specimens: Tim Ferriss 4-Hour Workweek (2007) — counterfeit-leaning per The 4-Hour Workweek — and Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez Your Money or Your Life (1992/2018), closer to enabling. The backing is real (the corporate-employment cage is a genuine slot-1), but the systemized-deliverable register makes it counterfeit-prone — the cluster's slot-2 deficit shows where the actual escape requires actual income/expense restructuring the framework's aesthetic-of-escape can substitute for.
- Western-pop-spiritual presence-as-release (US/Western 21c) — liberation from the pain-body / identification-with-thought via attentional shift to the present moment, derived loosely from Buddhist and Advaita Vedanta sources at a register stripped of the source-traditions' eightfold path / guru-lineage discipline. Specimen: Eckhart Tolle The Power of Now (1997). Distinct from #7 (Dhammapada — Buddhist with technical eightfold-path discipline) and #4 (Gita — Hindu with karma-yoga discipline) by the near-immediate state-shift the book promises and the absence of the structured discipline the source traditions require. The pop-spiritual register is substantively real at the level of "use the attention practices, work with a teacher, integrate with therapy" — counterfeit-prone at the level of "the book alone delivers what it promises in the title." See The Power of Now.
Sage-pole backing-space update. Backings 4 / 6 / 7 / 8 together cover the sage-pole of liberation across four distinct wisdom traditions (Hindu / Taoist / Buddhist / Stoic) with distinct mechanisms — karma yoga, wu wei, cessation of craving, withdrawal of assent. The engine's backing space is provably plural in a way the prior Western-narrative entries (Doll's House, Frederick Douglass) did not show. Three originally-named holes (Nirvana, Tao wu wei, Stoic inner freedom) are now filled by Dhammapada, Tao Te Ching, and Aurelius+Epictetus respectively. Six holes remain — the activist/collective pole (solidarity, anarchist mutual-aid), the relational pole (Sufi fana, indigenous reciprocity), the existential-absurdist pole, and the carnivalesque.
Candidate-engine signals. Backing #3 (contemplative-companioned un-resolution) was promoted as a candidate engine and resolved as a backing of liberation/autonomy: tested against Lila (Robinson) and Convenience Store Woman (Murata), neither confirms a separate engine. Lila runs the reckoning-without-redemption bundle (liberation + redemption + caretaking) — the Reverend is companion AND beloved AND teacher; criterion 5 fails. Murata runs liberation-into-vocational-essence (the inverted Doll's House) — Keiko's dissonance is external-imposed normalcy, not internal-unjustified; criteria 2, 5, 6 fail. The contemplative-companioned backing joins the eight named modes.
caretaking/being-needed
Slot-proven entries. Charlotte's Web (White).
Backings present:
- Sacrificial commitment unto death — Charlotte spends her last strength weaving for Wilbur and dies of it; the carer's own life lifted by being depended on; the cost paid in full. American 20c children's-literature backing. (Charlotte's Web)
- Indigenous reciprocity-of-care (the Honorable Harvest) — care AS the structural mode of being-with the land. The land needs us back. Named obligations: take only what is given, leave more than you take, ask permission, give thanks. The carer is not the heroic solo giver (Charlotte) but a participant in a mutual web. Potawatomi backing. (Sweetgrass ~)
Backings missing:
- Maternal sacrifice in war/famine — survival-as-care, the child kept alive at the cost of the carer's body. Morrison's Beloved (in-copyright), some sections of Grapes of Wrath, some of Tolstoy.
- Hospice / end-of-life caregiving — care for the dying, the carer's life made meaningful by accompanying the leave-taking. Atul Gawande's Being Mortal (non-fiction), the late chapters of many literary illness-memoirs.
- Disabled-child caregiving — the carer's vocation built around dependency that does not resolve. Anne Lamott, Andrew Solomon.
- Multi-generational care of the elderly — the parent now needing the child. Many short stories; Buddhist filial-piety frame.
- Compassionate-bodhisattva mode (Mahayana Buddhist) — caretaking-at-cosmic-scope: the vow to remain in cycle until all beings are saved. Lotus Sutra, the Heart Sutra, Shantideva.
Candidate-engine signals. The bodhisattva mode pulls toward something larger than dyadic caretaking — care-as-cosmic-orientation, possibly closer to legacy/transcendence under a different name. Worth a slot-test.
legacy/transcendence
Slot-proven entries. The Iliad (Homer/Butler), Shakespeare's Sonnets (Shakespeare), The Lord of the Rings (Tolkien, joint with belonging), Song of Solomon (Morrison), Lose Your Mother (Hartman), Kindred (Butler, joint with wound), There There (Orange).
Backings present:
- Explicit trade of mortal life for the deed-that-is-remembered — Achilles' "two fates"; Sarpedon's "win glory or yield it"; Hector "let me first do some great thing." Martial-kleos backing. (Iliad)
- Art conferred on another — verse-immortality bestowed on the beloved by the poet's craft; the making of the immortality is the backing, not the doing. Renaissance-lyric backing. (Sonnets)
- Bloodline / inheritance carried forward through restoration — Aragorn's line restored; Frodo bears the burden across an age. Christian-medieval romance backing. (LOTR)
- Indigenous oral-tradition transmission — legacy as the story you carry and pass intact; songlines as "maps of story carrying knowledge along the lines of energy that manifest as Law in the mind and land as one." The transmission is the work — Yunkaporta as bridge-keeper / short-haired Gaul carrying fragmentary indigenous knowledge across the colonial rupture. Aboriginal Apalech backing. Sweetgrass complements at also-runs scope: the Skywoman myth + Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address transmitted in print (Sweetgrass ~). Distinct from #1 (Iliad's martial-kleos), #2 (Sonnets' verse-conferred-immortality), and #3 (LOTR's bloodline-restoration). (Sand Talk ~; Sweetgrass ~)
- Position-survives-the-person / office-inherited (2026-05-29 addition) — Neil Gaiman's Sandman (1989-1996): Dream of the Endless dies and is replaced by Daniel, who becomes the new Dream — the office of Dream continues even as the specific Morpheus does not. Distinct from #1 (Iliad's name-remembered-as-deed), #3 (LOTR's bloodline-via-individual), and #4 (Sand Talk's story-passed-intact) by the institutional-position-itself-as-the-transmission register. Sibling to dharma-as-cosmic-order-participation (named hole below) but at mythological-anthology register rather than caste-role register. Modern dark-fantasy backing. (Sandman ~; see The Sandman)
- Ancestral-name-recovery / preservation across historical rupture — the descendant pays the slot-2 cost; the legacy is retrieved or preserved across a violence (slavery, name-erasure) that interrupted continuous transmission. Distinct from #1 by the descendant rather than the ancestor paying the kleos cost; distinct from #3 by the retrospective-and-discontinuous recovery across a deliberately-imposed erasure rather than continuous bloodline. The backing admits three sub-modes along two axes — substrate-grant (the substrate's capacity to complete the wish-shape) × bearer-agency (chosen vs coerced):
- Fictional success (granted × chosen) — Morrison's Song of Solomon: Milkman travels south to find gold and discovers instead the chain of names "Solomon", "Jake", "Sing Byrd", "Shalimar" that the slave-imposed "Macon Dead" surname had buried; the slot-2 cost is paid by the descendant — not by the ancestor whose flight cost Ryna and the twenty-one children, but recapitulated through Milkman (Hagar abandoned; Pilate killed at Solomon's Leap when the bones are returned). Slot-3 fills at the closing leap (l. 6249) where the descendant "knew what Shalimar knew" — the legacy is the knowing-of-the-ancestor's-act, recovered across the rupture that buried it. African-American family-saga register. See Song of Solomon. (Song of Solomon ✓)
- Non-fictional foreclosure (refused × chosen) — Hartman's Lose Your Mother: a Black scholar travels Ghana on a Fulbright to retrace the slave trade's coastal route and finds no chain to recover, only the obruni-call ("stranger from across the sea", l. 171-83) that names her ancestors' condition. "My family trail disappeared in the second decade of the nineteenth century" (l. 213); even the bearer's adopted name (Saidiya, taken in college to claim African heritage) is named as "a fiction of someone I would never be" (l. 235). Slot-3 fills as the book-itself-as-the-acknowledgment-of-failure — the title's inversion (lose your mother) IS the engine's resolution. African-American academic-memoir register. See Lose Your Mother. (Lose Your Mother ✓)
- Fictional coerced-preservation (granted × coerced) — Butler's Kindred: Dana, a 1976 Black writer, is pulled across time to early-19th-c. Maryland whenever her white slaveholder ancestor Rufus is in mortal danger; she keeps him alive long enough for him to father Hagar (her direct ancestor) by raping Alice; her body absorbs the cost across the six trips, and her left arm fuses into the wall of her living room at the spot Rufus had gripped on the climactic return (l. 8132). The lineage IS preserved (Hagar lives long enough for the Fourteenth Amendment to free her, l. 8159), but the descendant did not choose the recovery — the speculative-fiction time-travel substrate enforced it, and the slot-3 fills as the bearer's physical absorption of the enforcement. Wound-spine specimen; legacy/transcendence at also-runs strength. African-American speculative-fiction register. See Kindred. (Kindred ✓ — wound-spine; legacy at also-runs)
The two-axis structure: fictional-success (granted-chosen) completes by choice; non-fictional-foreclosure (refused-chosen) acknowledges the substrate's refusal as the resolution; fictional-coerced-preservation (granted-coerced) holds the substrate's enforcement at the bearer's physical cost as the resolution. The fourth cell — refused-coerced (the substrate refuses to complete AND the bearer did not choose the seeking) — is structurally possible and a named hole. Genre is a strong axis-correlate but not determinative: fiction can also run the refused-coerced register if a speculative substrate enforces seeking and then refuses completion.
- Fictional author-rendered foreclosure (refused × multi-bearer-converging, surfaced 2026-06-07) — Orange's There There: twelve narrators converge on the Big Oakland Powwow held at the Oakland Coliseum, each carrying some shape of the urban-Indigenous-displacement substrate; the gathering is foreclosed by a shooting before any bearer's slot-3 completes. Tony Loneman dies in the closing image returning to his grandmother's kitchen at age four ("he watches himself go up, out of himself, then he watches himself from above, looks at his body and remembers that it was never actually really him. He was never Tony just like he was never the Drome. Both were masks", l. 9217-22); the bearer's access to the ancestral substrate arrives as the bearer is dying. Sibling sub-mode to non-fictional-foreclosure (Hartman): same engine, same ancestral-name-recovery-across-rupture register, different substrate (African-diaspora → urban-Indigenous-displacement), different sub-class within the umbrella foreclosure-at-slot-3 (Hartman bearer-acknowledged → Orange author-rendered — no bearer voices the foreclosure as acknowledgment; the work's multi-bearer structural commitment IS the slot-3 fill). Confirms the umbrella's sub-class split (bearer-acknowledged ↔ author-rendered) is engine-orthogonal — the legacy engine now holds both sub-classes. Contemporary urban-Indigenous literary fiction. See There There. (There There ✓)
Backings missing:
- Dharma as cosmic-order participation — performing one's caste-role correctly is participating in something beyond one lifespan. Hindu backing. (Gita ~ — already cited; entry pending)
- Founding-of-a-people / patriarch — Abrahamic/Hebrew Bible backing: the promise that "your descendants shall be numerous"; not name-remembered-as-deed but name-carried-forward-as-line. Genesis, KJV.
- Confucian filial transmission — legacy as the unbroken chain of ritual practice across generations. Analects.
- Buddhist merit-transfer — accumulated merit dedicated to all sentient beings; legacy not as personal name but as karma-stream contribution. Mahayana sutras.
- Scientific-canonical contribution — one's name carried in the equations / the theorem / the law. Newton's, Einstein's, Darwin's posthumous presence in the structure of knowledge itself. Memoirs, biographies, popular science. (No clean fictional specimen yet.)
- Artistic-canon transmission of style — Bloom's influence-anxiety territory; the legacy of the artist-as-precursor reshaping all who come after.
Candidate-engine signals. Backings #1, #2, #3 + Gita's #4 all sit comfortably under legacy/transcendence. The backings list is plural but coherent. No obvious candidate-engine pressure here.
belonging
Slot-proven entries. The Jungle Book (Kipling), Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Rowling, joint with repricing), The Lord of the Rings (joint with legacy/transcendence).
Backings present:
- Ritual admission to a named tribe — Council Rock, the price (Bagheera's bull) and the vouching (Baloo's word); institutional belonging via specific rite. Imperial-Victorian / pack-codex backing. (Jungle Book)
- Sorting-house institutional admission — Hogwarts house assignment, the boarding-school family; structured belonging by ceremony and roster. British boarding-school backing. (HP1)
- Quest-fellowship across difference — the Fellowship of the Ring; bond forged by shared mission across species/class. Christian-Anglican quest-romance backing. (LOTR)
- Indigenous kinship-with-more-than-human — belonging that extends across species to plants, animals, landscape, and ancestors. The Potawatomi Grammar of Animacy treats plants, water, stone as animate beings — kinship is grammatical, not metaphoric ("Linked by sweetgrass, there is reciprocity between you"). (Sweetgrass ~; Sand Talk ~ at also-runs scope, framing displacement from land as the loss of "the sheer genius that comes from belonging in symbiotic relation to it.")
- Constructive-rather-than-joined queer family-form — Nelson's Argonauts: Maggie, Harry, the stepson, and Iggy build a family-form across years in which both adults' bodies transform (Harry on T + top surgery; Maggie pregnant). The slot-2 cost is paid in the labor of constructing the family-form itself under conditions where the surrounding social language ("two-mom", "straight ladies have always been hot for Harry") does not yet accommodate it. Distinct from the cult-counterfeit by the absence of enclosure — the family stays in ongoing engagement with the surrounding world (the Christmas mug, the airport HR department, the Biola evangelicals, the cabaret bouncer) rather than against it. Closes the chosen-family candidate-engine question: chosen-family is belonging at this constructive register, not a sibling engine. Contemporary queer-theory-and-memoir backing. (The Argonauts ✓ — also a slot-proven recognition specimen at the mutual-loose-witness sub-mode of the affirmed pole)
Backings missing:
- Diaspora / chosen-people identity — belonging across the absence of land or majority status, sustained by ritual, text, and memory. Diaspora Jewish lit (Chabon, Roth); the Black church in Toni Morrison; Native American sovereignty literature.
- Cultural-system-scope belonging — belonging to a way of life rather than a tribe-or-fellowship. The Kesh in Always Coming Home (~), the Pangan society in Chambers (~). May be candidate-engine territory.
- Workplace / professional belonging — the camaraderie of the crew, the squad, the team-as-family without quest-frame. Sports fiction (cupel has #38 underdog-sports), military fiction, Mistborn crew (~).
- Internet / subculture / online community — late-modern belonging via shared object-of-attention without face-to-face presence. AO3 / fandom (#39 queued), some YA contemporary.
- Lost generation / exile artistic community — belonging as expatriate misfit among other expatriate misfits. Hemingway's Paris, Baldwin's Paris.
Candidate-engine signals. Cultural-system-scope belonging keeps not fitting cleanly — see liberation/autonomy candidate above. Same hole, different angle.
repricing
Slot-proven entries. Pride and Prejudice (Austen), A Wrinkle in Time (L'Engle), Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (joint with belonging).
Backings present:
- Cross-currency revaluation in a stated marriage-market — Elizabeth dismissed in beauty, repriced in wit ("the liveliness of your mind"); the market named in the novel's first sentences. Regency marriage-plot backing. (P&P)
- Faults-as-the-currency-of-worth — "Meg, I give you your faults"; the deficits revalued as the very thing that saves; the cross-currency inversion held against IT (Camazotz). Mid-20c children's metaphysical-quest backing. (AWIT)
- Hidden-noble-blood-revealed — Harry's worth was always there, the receipt delivered when Hagrid arrives; the deficits (the cupboard, the Dursleys) revealed as cover, not as defect. British school-story backing. (HP1)
Backings missing:
- Working-class dignity revaluation against the bourgeois market — Marxist/socialist backing: the worker revalued not by individual recognition but by class consciousness. Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath (~), Dickens's Hard Times, Zola.
- Black-radical revaluation — Cooper's A Voice From the South (in lexicon), Toni Morrison, Baldwin.
- Disability-revaluation — the deficits-as-difference frame (Percy Jackson ~ leans here); deeper specimens in Solomon's Far from the Tree, recent disability-justice writing.
- Queer revaluation against straight market — the closet-as-cover, the coming-out as repricing. Baldwin, Hollinghurst, Maupin.
- Indigenous revaluation of pre-colonial knowledge as still-real — Kimmerer, Yunkaporta; the "pre-modern" reread as more-than-modern.
- Geriatric / late-life revaluation — the dismissed elder revalued. Old-age narratives; some King Lear (lexicon has Shakespeare).
Candidate-engine signals. None obvious. Repricing's backing space is wide but each fits comfortably under the engine.
mastery
Slot-proven entries. Robinson Crusoe (Defoe), The Call of the Wild (London).
Backings present:
- Self-instruction by labor, time, necessity, and rationality — "by labour, application, and contrivance"; the failed canoe as teacher; no human instructor. Enlightenment-Protestant-economic backing. (Crusoe)
- Brutal trial-by-environment — instruction by the wild itself, animal-mode mastery. Naturalist late-19c backing. (Call of the Wild)
Backings missing:
- Yogic / spiritual-discipline mastery — practice over years under a teacher; mastery of the inner life rather than of external skill. Gita's four yogas (~).
- Confucian rite-and-self-cultivation — mastery via ritualized practice and emulation of the junzi (gentleman-of-character). Analects.
- Stoic askesis — mastery of the inner citadel through repeated examination. Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus.
- Craftsmen's-apprenticeship lineage — mastery transmitted through guild apprenticeship; the master-and-pupil relationship across generations. Medieval-guild fiction, Chinese craft fiction.
- Embodied / athletic mastery — Olympic training, martial-arts apprenticeship, dance discipline. Sports fiction, Wuxia, Cradle (~).
- Indigenous land-knowledge mastery — mastery as deep familiarity with a specific landscape across generations. Yunkaporta, much Aboriginal lit.
- Hacker / hands-on technical mastery — late-20c backing: mastery via building, breaking, rebuilding; community-knowledge transmission. Some Pynchon, Stephenson's Cryptonomicon, hacker memoirs.
Candidate-engine signals. The spiritual-discipline mastery (Gita, Stoic, Buddhist) is recognizably mastery but the wish-payout to the reader feels closer to legacy/transcendence (participation in lineage) or liberation/autonomy (freedom-from-craving). It may be that mastery's backing space is bigger than the engine, and the engine's edges with legacy and liberation get blurry at the wisdom-tradition pole. Worth watching.
redemption
Slot-proven entries. A Christmas Carol (Dickens), The Chronicles of Narnia (Lewis).
Backings present:
- Self-reformation under Spirit-forced reckoning — Scrooge is the "tight-fisted hand at the grind-stone … covetous, old sinner" (Stave I) — the narrator stands behind the moral verdict; he is correctly seen, not mispriced. The three-ghost confrontation forces the inventory; the consummation is the chosen new self ("the Time before him was his own, to make amends in!", Stave V). Slot 3 fills via moral + social restoration, not interpersonal pardon — Dickens supplies no forgiver. Victorian-Christian self-reformation backing. (Christmas Carol)
- Substitutionary atonement — Edmund's life is forfeit under Deep Magic to the White Witch ("his life is forfeit to me. His blood is my property", Ch. 13); Aslan pays the cost in his place ("I have settled the matter. She has renounced the claim on your brother's blood"). The debtor is bankrupt; another bears the price. Slot 3 is the remaking — "King Edmund the Just" — the traitor becomes the just king. Christian-allegorical backing. (Narnia)
These two are maximally-different backings (self-paid vs. paid-by-another) under the same engine, both satisfying the same counterfeit-discriminating wish-valence guard (cheap grace — absolution without cost — is what the engine rejects).
Backings missing:
- Tolstoyan sustained-witness conversion — Resurrection: Nekhlyudov tracks the girl he wronged to Siberia; the redemption is sustained accompaniment and material amends rather than a single Spirit-vision or substitutionary death. Russian late-19c-Christian backing; the slot-2 mechanism is years of unglamorous restitution. Distinct from both Christmas Carol and Narnia by duration and by the absence of a single ritual moment.
- Japanese seppuku-as-atonement — the debtor pays with his own life, but ritually and formally, restoring family honor; the moral restoration is the death itself. The 47 Ronin, Mishima. Distinct from Narnia because the debtor is the one who pays (not substituted); distinct from Christmas Carol because the cost is total (life) and the consummation is the death-as-act, not the morning-after.
- Buddhist confession-and-merit-making — the debtor confesses, performs merit-generating acts, accumulates karma to offset the wrong over many lives if necessary. The slot-2 mechanism is karmic rather than legal/contractual. Jataka tales; the Vimalakirti Sutra.
- Restorative-justice circle (modern) — the debtor faces the victim in a structured encounter; apology and amends are negotiated; the community witnesses. Howard Zehr, modern criminal-justice memoirs. Slot-3 is consummated by community witness, distinct from the privately-resolved cases above.
- 12-step recovery model — the debtor admits powerlessness (Step 1), makes amends (Steps 8-9), sustains the practice (Step 12). American 20c-religious backing; AA, NA, recovery memoirs. The redemption is ongoing rather than terminated.
- Confucian self-rectification — "When I am wrong, let no one fail to point it out" (Analects). The gentleman's perpetual self-correction. May not fit cleanly under redemption — see candidate signal.
- Black radical reparation — Coates's The Case for Reparations, Hartman's Lose Your Mother. The debt is owed by the wrongdoer-collective (settler-society) to the wronged (descendants of the enslaved); the redemption is reparation. Collective-debtor case, distinct from the individual-debtor specimens.
Candidate-engine signals.
- Confucian continuous self-rectification — slot-tested and resolved: outside the wish-fulfillment scope. The Analects fails redemption's slot 1 (incompleteness, not guilt), fails redemption's slot 3 (no terminal restoration), and fails mastery's slot 3 (Master himself says he "has not yet attained" the chunzi character). The text refuses to promise the arrival; it prescribes a practice whose value is in the doing. Useful boundary-case: clarifies that cupel's engines require the work to offer the reader a payoff (even if not consummated on the page, as in the Gita / Tao Te Ching / Dhammapada / Meditations — all of which DO promise the wish is achievable through practice). Texts that decline to offer arrival fall outside the model as directive practice texts, not as candidate engines.
- Collective-debtor reparation (Black radical) — slot-tested and resolved: not a candidate engine. Souls of Black Folk fails redemption's slots 2 (no atonement made) and 3 (no consummation arrived) but fits virtue of defeat cleanly at collective-political scope. The reparation reading was misdiagnosed under redemption; the collective-debtor backing belongs under virtue of defeat (now listed as backing #4 there).
order/legibility
Slot-proven entries. The Red-Headed League (in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes) (Doyle), The Gold-Bug (Poe), The Da Vinci Code (Brown).
Backings present:
- Master-detective observation — Holmes is already-capable at the start; the engine runs through the reader's wish ("the world is solvable"), not the protagonist's becoming. The backing is a single decisive observation by the already-master ("The knees of his trousers", Red-Headed League l. 1765), validated by the unflashy "perfectly obvious from the first" explanation. Late-Victorian London consulting-detective backing. (Red-Headed League)
- Method-as-creed (deductive cryptography) — the engine's wish stated outright as a creed: "it may well be doubted whether human ingenuity can construct an enigma of the kind which human ingenuity may not, by proper application, resolve" (Legrand, Gold-Bug ll. 4351-4353). The method is explicit frequency analysis; the puzzle is an inert cipher (no human scheme to read, no client, no crime); the reader is invited into the procedure. American recluse-naturalist backing. (Gold-Bug)
- Cryptographic-physical falsifiability — the engine's load-bearing slot 2 made literal: the cryptex destroys the answer if forced; only honest inquiry yields the secret ("the glass vial would break, and the vinegar would quickly dissolve the papyrus", Ch. 47). The genuine engine runs on the cryptographic layer; the same text runs the counterfeit on its pseudo-historical-conspiracy layer (Teabing's "hidden order"). Modern thriller backing — and the cleanest available text-internal demonstration that the engine and its counterfeit are the same wish-shape separated by exactly the falsifiability slot. (Da Vinci Code)
The shared wish across all three: the world is legible; hidden truth is discoverable; the click of explanation arrives. The common counterfeit (identified explicitly in the Da Vinci Code entry): the totalizing conspiracy — same payoff with the falsifiable inquiry surgically removed.
Backings missing:
- Borgesian metaphysical labyrinth-reading — labyrinths, infinite libraries, the universe-as-text. The wish is legibility-at-the-cosmic-scope, often deferred or undermined; the reader is invited into the impossible-to-complete inquiry. Ficciones, The Library of Babel, "The Garden of Forking Paths."
- Talmudic / scholastic glossing — text-as-puzzle, generation upon generation of commentary; legibility achieved across centuries by collective inquiry. Sefer-tradition Jewish lit; medieval Christian scholasticism (Aquinas's Summa as the formal genre).
- Divinatory reading — I Ching, tarot, dream-interpretation, augury. Order found by consultation with a structured oracle rather than logical inquiry. May pressure the engine: the "method" is non-falsifiable in the inquiry-sense the Da Vinci Code names as load-bearing. See candidate signal.
- Indigenous sky-reading / star-knowledge — celestial navigation, songlines as star-maps, the sky read as continuous knowledge-system. Polynesian wayfinding traditions; Aboriginal astronomy (some of this surfaces in Sand Talk as "lines of energy that manifest as Law"). May overlap with Sand Talk's order/legibility also-run.
- Algorithmic / machine-learning legibility (late-modern) — the world made legible via computation; data-driven inference; the model as method. Recent SF — Watts's Blindsight; non-fiction Cathy O'Neil's Weapons of Math Destruction as the counterfeit-warning specimen.
- Phenomenological close-reading — the world made legible by patient attention to lived experience; the discipline of description-without-presupposition. Husserl, Merleau-Ponty; Annie Dillard at the literary register.
- Conspiracy-counterfeit specimens — the engine's counterfeit pure: a work that runs the totalizing conspiracy without the falsifiability check. Pynchon's Crying of Lot 49 is the meta-specimen (the novel is about the counterfeit); QAnon-canon would be the unmediated specimen.
- Meta-formal genre-shift as inquiry (2026-05-29 addition) — order/legibility deployed through the form's lens-shift rather than through a character's diegetic investigation. Donald Glover's Atlanta (FX 2016-22) makes systemic conditions (racism, music-industry exploitation, Black-celebrity-trauma) legible by shifting the genre lens on them — the Teddy Perkins horror episode, the white-people-can't-see-Earn surrealist-comedy episode, the European-tour mode-changes — rather than by having a character investigate them. Cupel's prior slot-proven order/legibility specimens (Holmes, Da Vinci Code, Gold-Bug) all operate through diegetic-inquiry; Atlanta extends the engine to meta-formal-inquiry. Distinct backing worth named-status in the inventory. See Atlanta.
Candidate-engine signals. Divinatory reading (I Ching, tarot) may press the engine: the wish ("the world snaps into sense") is paid out, but the slot-2 mechanism is consultation-with-a-structured-oracle rather than the falsifiable inquiry that the Da Vinci Code entry argues is load-bearing. If divinatory reading slot-tests positively into order/legibility, the engine's slot 2 may need to admit "structured-oracle consultation" alongside "falsifiable inquiry" — softening the genuine/counterfeit boundary. Or divinatory reading may be a candidate engine in its own right (the wish for ordered-revelation). Worth a slot-test on the I Ching itself.
the double life
Slot-proven entries. The Mark of Zorro (McCulley), The Scarlet Pimpernel (Orczy).
Backings present:
- Aristocratic-fop concealing rescuer-genius (unmasked behavioural pose) — Percy's "mask of the inane fop … the part consummately well played" (Pimpernel, ll. 5956-5957). The cultivated low surface is deliberately constructed by the protagonist (the distinctness key from repricing) and the recognition is refused at slot 3 — the secret kept as the pleasure. Revolutionary-era English-aristocrat backing. (Scarlet Pimpernel)
- Listless-weakling concealing masked avenger (literal mask + behavioural pose) — Don Diego Vega's engineered weakness as cover for Zorro: "So I pretended to have small interest in life, so that men never would connect my name with that of the highwayman I expected to become" (Zorro, ll. 9037-9039). The henshin beat — "The moment I donned cloak and mask, the Don Diego part of me fell away" (ll. 9048-9051) — appears as the mechanism of switching between the two selves, not a separate engine. Pulp-adventure Spanish-California backing. (Mark of Zorro)
Both backings share the engine's load-bearing structure: cultivated surface (slot 1) + hidden extraordinary self (slot 2) + savored secret with refused recognition (slot 3). They differ in the form of the disguise (behavioural pose vs. mask + transformation) and the register (society romance vs. pulp adventure).
Backings missing:
- Superhero secret-identity — the direct descendant lineage. Clark Kent / Superman, Bruce Wayne / Batman, Peter Parker / Spider-Man. The Pimpernel/Zorro structure made into a 20c-21c popular form with the mask-or-glasses convention and the henshin beat. Slot-proof candidate: Christopher Reeve's Superman is the cleanest film specimen; the original Action Comics #1 is the cleanest comic.
- Spy / undercover work — the double life as profession rather than vocation. le Carré's George Smiley, Buchan's Richard Hannay, Greene's Quiet American. Distinct from Pimpernel/Zorro because the cover-identity is institutionally assigned and may not be a "hidden extraordinary self" so much as a "hidden loyalty."
- The artist whose day job conceals the practice — Wallace Stevens (insurance executive + poet), William Carlos Williams (doctor + poet), Kafka (clerk + writer). The day job is actually the day job, not a deliberate cover — but the secret-superior-self structure runs. May pressure the engine's "deliberately constructed surface" slot-1 distinctness from repricing.
- God-incarnate-as-ordinary (Christology) — Jesus as the carpenter's son who is the Word made flesh. Slot 3 is eventual revelation, not refused recognition. May not fit cleanly under the double life because the secret is meant to be revealed (the Gospels' whole arc); may pull toward apotheosis or legacy/transcendence.
- Magical-girl transformation — Sailor Moon, Madoka Magica, the henshin-genre as cultural norm rather than individual cunning. Japanese 20c-21c backing. The mask is literal magical transformation with public-vs-secret split that operates very differently from Zorro's tactical disguise.
- Highsmith-style schizoid impersonation — The Talented Mr. Ripley. The hidden self is forged, not genuinely extraordinary. Slot 2 is hollow — Ripley is no one underneath. May not fit the engine cleanly; possibly the cleanest counterfeit specimen of the double life.
- Fourth-wall-break: audience-as-confidant (2026-05-29 addition) — the double life's slot 3 (savored-secret) mechanism extended by making the viewing-audience the confidant. Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag (BBC 2016, 2019) operates the engine via the protagonist's direct-address-to-camera asides; the savored-secret-self is the narrating-Fleabag that the audience knows and the diegetic characters do not. Methodologically innovative because the engine's slot-3 consummates on-screen when the Hot Priest notices the asides in Season 2 ("Where did you just go?"). The audience-confidant mechanism is then released in the finale by Fleabag walking away from the camera. The catalog's clearest specimen of engine-mechanism-explicitly-named-and-resolved within the diegetic frame. Worth promoting to slot-proven via primary-text primary-text verification. See Fleabag.
- Prequel-form: foreknowledge intensifies the engine (2026-05-29 addition; engine-adjacent observation, not strictly a backing) — Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould's Better Call Saul (AMC 2015-22) demonstrates that prequel-form does not undermine the double-life engine but sharpens it. The audience knows Jimmy McGill becomes Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad; this should structurally undermine narrative-tension but intensifies the engine's slot-2 work because every choice Jimmy makes is read against the destination. The double-life-as-emergent (not given-from-start) operation is the catalog's clearest contemporary specimen at long-form-television register. May be a general engine-property worth testing: foreknowledge of slot-3 may intensify rather than diminish virtue-of-defeat and double-life engines specifically. See Better Call Saul.
Candidate-engine signals.
- Closeted queer life as a possible double-life backing presses the engine: the cultivated surface IS deliberately maintained (slot 1 fills), the hidden self IS genuinely real (slot 2 fills), but slot 3's savored secret with refused recognition may be inverted — the wish is to be known as one is (not the secret-kept). If the wish-payout valence is reversed, the work isn't running the double life but its mirror — closer to repricing (the suppressed self revalued and recognized) or being-desired-as-you-are (Shrek's clean-being-desired). Probably belongs under repricing's queer-revaluation hole, not here. Worth a slot-test on a specific text (Maupin's Tales of the City would be the obvious case) to decide.
apotheosis
Slot-proven entries. The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus (Marlowe), A Court of Mist and Fury (ACOTAR #2) (Maas), Fourth Wing (Yarros, joint with being-desired).
Backings present:
- Bargained pact with damnation as the price — Faustus reaches for omnipotence by his own will via the demonic compact ("A sound magician is a mighty god", l. 207); Mephistophilis is bound to serve him. Not chosen, not marked — the cleanest control on the election leak. The power arrives by pact (granted-not-earned, so mastery-distinct) but the cost is total: damnation in the bargain. Renaissance damnation-tragedy backing. (Doctor Faustus)
- Granted-by-collective with an election mark — Feyre is "Made—resurrected and given this new body by the seven High Lords of Prythian"; she carries "a kernel of all our power—like having seven thumbprints." The ascent is conferred, not constructed; the elections mark (the Cauldron's Making) marks her as the chosen vessel. Romantasy backing. (ACOMAF)
- Dragon-bonded-uniquely-signet — Violet is bonded by two dragons (an unprecedented event) and her lightning signet manifests; this is the apotheosis arc running alongside being-desired in the same volume, the cleanest demonstration that romantasy's apotheosis and being-desired are distinct engines that co-occur, not one blurred mega-wish. Modern romantasy backing. (Fourth Wing)
- Shadow-integration / Jungian unowned-self-named (2026-05-29 addition) — Ged's elevation through naming his shadow as his own across the long pursuit of A Wizard of Earthsea. The slot-3 elevation is achieved not by acquiring power but by owning the previously-disowned. Late-1960s American fantasy backing influenced by Jung. Predates and likely influences Lucas's Luke-confronts-the-dark-side register in Return of the Jedi (1983, see Star Wars) and much subsequent fantasy's psychologically-substantive apotheosis register. (Earthsea ~; see A Wizard of Earthsea)
- Oath-binding-as-condition-of-power (2026-05-29 addition) — Sanderson's Stormlight Knights Radiant Ideals where each spoken vow conditions the magical-power's continued operation. The slot-3 ascension is kept honest by mechanism: the power flees if the vow is broken. The catalog's clearest anti-counterfeit operational apotheosis-backing — structurally impossible to fake within the system. Contemporary epic-fantasy backing — Stormlight Archive ~ (The Way of Kings, Words of Radiance, Oathbringer).
The shared wish: dominion that exceeds ordinary human limits — power as itself the payoff, not as means to something else.
Backings missing:
- Hindu cosmic-form revelation — Krishna's vishvarupa in Gita Ch. 11 (Arjuna sees Krishna's universal form, all of cosmos contained); the wish is the revelation of cosmic identity, not the acquisition of power. May pull toward legacy/transcendence rather than apotheosis. Worth a slot-test.
- Mahayana bodhisattva-becoming-buddha — the long arc of perfections (the pāramitās) culminating in buddhahood. Lotus Sutra, Shantideva. Distinct from Faustus and Feyre because the wish is liberation-for-all-beings, not self-aggrandizement; the directional valence of the power may pressure the engine. See candidate signal.
- Greek hero-deified — Heracles, Castor and Pollux, the heroes apotheosized at death. Classical mythological backing; the slot-2 mechanism is labors-completed-then-deification-conferred, distinct from Faustus's pact and Feyre's Making.
- Roman emperor-divinized — Augustus's apotheosis ("Divi filius"), the imperial cult, Suetonius. State-political backing where the apotheosis is conferred posthumously by the senate-and-cult, distinct from individual ascent.
- Modern singularity / transhumanist transcendence — Kurzweil's The Singularity Is Near (non-fiction), Greg Egan's Permutation City, Diaspora. The wish: ascend beyond biological limits via technology. May be a 21c backing of apotheosis OR a candidate engine if the payoff is collective. See candidate signal.
- Magical-girl maximalist ascension — Madoka Magica's climax: Madoka becomes the Law of Cycles, taking on cosmic-corrective dominion. Japanese 21c backing; combines magical-girl henshin (mechanism) with full apotheosis (payoff).
- Mass-market self-help counterfeit — Robbins, the seminar circuit, the "level up your life" rhetoric that sells the apotheosis wish without the cost (Faustus's damnation; Feyre's vessel-status). The cleanest modern counterfeit specimen of the engine.
Candidate-engine signals.
- Bodhisattva-becoming-buddha — the wish-payoff valence is for all beings, not for self. The engine's "power as the payoff" structure may not fit cleanly: the bodhisattva's power IS great, but the wish is the liberation-of-others the power makes possible. May press toward a candidate engine ("vicarious-cosmic-rescue") or may extend apotheosis to admit altruistic ascension as a backing. Slot-test on a specific bodhisattva text would decide.
- Singularity transcendence at collective scope — if the wish-payout is humanity's collective ascent rather than the individual's, the engine pressure is similar to the bodhisattva case. Permutation City tests this cleanly because the ascent is technological-personal at the protagonist level but cosmic-collective in the framing. Slot-test queued.
purity/contamination
Slot-proven entries. Dracula (Stoker), Naaman the Syrian (2 Kings 5) (Hebrew Bible / KJV), The Metamorphosis (Kafka).
Backings present:
- Gothic defiled-victim, cleansed by bloody labour of lovers — Mina branded "Unclean! Unclean!" by the Host; Lucy's release by the stake "yielded as a privilege to the one best entitled to it"; Quincey Morris dies in the final cleansing of Dracula himself. Religious-vocabulary draped over the imposed contamination ("mark of shame ... until the Judgment Day") — a sin-overlay leak the next two specimens control. Late-Victorian gothic backing. (Dracula)
- Levitical ritual-purity, cleansed by humble obedience — non-moral defilement (leprosy as tum'ah, not sin). Cost is the humbling of pride: Naaman must obey a lowly instruction ("Wash, and be clean", 2 Kings 5:13); seven dips in the Jordan; "his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean" (5:14). The cleanest isolator of the engine in the ritual register — the source's own purity-system declines the sin overlay. Ancient-Hebrew / Levitical backing. (Naaman)
- Modernist purifier's-POV, cleansed by expulsion — Gregor's blameless transformation into "a horrible vermin"; the family expels the contaminant ("we have to try and get rid of it"); the cost is a life (Gregor's); the household is restored ("filled with warm sunshine"). Distinct from Dracula by POV (purifier's vs. defiled-victim's); distinct from Naaman by the impure belonging-loss running co-axis ("we wouldn't have a brother any more"). Modernist alienation-fable backing. (The Metamorphosis)
The engine carries two distinguishing axes:
- POV axis — defiled-victim (Dracula) vs. purifier (Metamorphosis) vs. ambivalent-both (Naaman).
- Moral-overlay axis — religious-guilt-tinged (Dracula) vs. ritually-non-moral (Naaman) vs. blameless-but-relief-tinged (Metamorphosis).
Backings missing:
- Hindu caste-purity codes — Manusmriti's elaborate purity codes; ablution as cleansing; the contamination structurally social (caste-touching). Hindu backing distinct from Levitical: the impurity is categorical (born into) rather than episodic (transient state).
- Shinto ritual ablution — misogi under waterfalls, salt purification, the Shinto shrine-entry rituals. Japanese backing.
- Modern hygiene / germ-theory — Pasteur, Lister, the public-health framing: the contamination is empirically real (microbial), the cleansing is biochemical. 19c-20c scientific backing. Distinct from ritual purity because the contaminant has a true causal basis; the engine still runs but with a different epistemic register.
- 19c moral-purity reform movements — temperance, social-hygiene, abolitionism's purity-vocabulary; the contamination as moral-political (alcohol, slavery, "social vice"). American Protestant backing. May overlap with the dual-use's counterfeit pole.
- Body-horror cinema — Cronenberg's The Fly (Brundle's literal transformation as imposed contamination), Carpenter's The Thing (the alien as paranoia-of-contamination), early Lynch. Late-20c film backing in the gothic-defiled-victim mode but with biological-not-supernatural mechanism.
- Eating-disorder narratives — contamination of the body via food, cleansing via purging. Laurie Halse Anderson's Wintergirls, some Roxane Gay. The defiled is also the purifier; voluntarily-ingested-but-felt-as-imposed; a candidate counterfeit specimen.
- Indigenous land-sickness / ceremony-cleansing — the wounded land needing ceremony; Kimmerer touches it (the Windigo chapter of Sweetgrass — the cleansing of greed-spirit from the land). Linda Hogan, Joy Harjo. Indigenous backing.
Candidate-engine signals.
- QAnon-style purity panic as the engine's pure modern counterfeit — same wish-shape (contamination-warded, the children kept safe, the cleansing of the polluting outsider) with false target and manufactured threat. Worth flagging as the cleanest contemporary specimen of the engine's dual-use pole, paralleling the conspiracy-counterfeit signal in order/legibility (the totalizing conspiracy). The two engines' counterfeits co-occur in conspiracy-canon (the hidden order plus the contamination panic), which may itself be a structural finding worth a separate theory note.
security/safety
Slot-proven entries. Treasure Island (Stevenson), The Story of the Three Little Pigs (Jacobs).
Backings present:
- Fortified-refuge against army-scale threat — the stockade is a real wall ("without door or opening, too strong to pull down without time and labour"), bought at real cost (Redruth shot getting over it), and the held wall renders the threat helpless ("they stood quiet in shelter and shot the others like partridges"). The danger is pure violent harm; no contamination register — the cleanest isolation from purity/contamination. Adventure-register Victorian backing. (Treasure Island)
- Brick-house earned-vs-counterfeit fable — the tale is the wish-valence guard, in three repetitions: straw and furze are counterfeit safety (the cheap shelter that looks like safety), brick is the real defense at real cost ("So the man gave him the bricks, and he built his house with them"). When the wolf comes, "he could not, with all his huffing and puffing, blow the house down." Fable-register folktale backing. (Three Little Pigs)
Both backings share the engine's load-bearing structure: real defense against real threat, paid in genuine cost (life, labour, materials), with the safety actually delivered when the defense holds. The pure prevention-pole engine.
Backings missing:
- Modern surveillance-as-safety — post-9/11, cameras everywhere, TSA, biometric checkpoints, the prevention-of-terror infrastructure. Modern American backing leaning heavily counterfeit (much of it is security-theater that fails the wish-valence guard). Bruce Schneier's Beyond Fear is the canonical critique; a clean counterfeit specimen would be a work that runs the surveillance-safety wish at face value — possibly some Tom Clancy.
- Insurance / actuarial backing — the wish for safety bought via risk-pooling. The defense is financial, not physical; the engine still runs but with a different cost (the premium) and a different mechanism (collective absorption). 20c-21c American backing.
- Gun-as-talisman American backing — the household firearm as the personal wall; "armed and ready" rhetoric, NRA-canon. Personal-individual rather than collective-refuge; the cost is the responsibility of readiness. Cleanest specimen: some Cormac McCarthy at the literary register; gun-culture memoirs at the popular register.
- Gated community / bunker — the contemporary descendant of Treasure Island's stockade at suburban and ultra-wealthy scale. Tech-bro doomsday-bunker subculture; suburban gated-community fiction. American backing.
- Indigenous traditional-knowledge-of-danger — Yunkaporta's "if you don't move with the land, the land will move you" frames knowing-the-environment as the safety. Distinct from fortified-refuge by mechanism: the safety is in relational competence with the land, not in a wall. May press the engine's slot-2 requirement; see candidate signal.
- Maternal-protection / fortress-mother — the parent's body as the wall. Morrison's Beloved runs this at extreme valence (Sethe killing her child to keep her from re-enslavement — protection at maximal cost). The defense is biological-relational.
- Public-health quarantine / lockdown — collective safety bought via collective isolation. 2020 COVID experience; cholera-era public-health writing. State-backed backing.
- Antibody / immune-system / vaccination — biological defense as backing; the immune system as the wall. Pasteur-era + late-20c writing on epidemics.
Candidate-engine signals.
- Indigenous knowing-the-land safety presses the engine because the defense isn't a wall at all — it's relational competence (knowing the songlines, the seasons, the country). If the slot-2 "real defense" admits non-physical knowledge-as-defense, the engine's backing space widens substantially; if it doesn't, indigenous-safety reads may be running belonging-with-the-land instead (cf. Sweetgrass entry under belonging backing #4). Worth a slot-test on a specific Indigenous-safety text — possibly Sand Talk's land-knowledge sections, or Linda Hogan's Solar Storms.
- Modern surveillance-as-safety as the engine's principal contemporary counterfeit specimen — same wish-shape (the threat warded, the children kept safe) with the defense being theatrical rather than real (defense against rare exotic threats while accepting common everyday ones; Schneier's argument). Worth flagging as parallel to the totalizing-conspiracy counterfeit in order/legibility and the purity-panic counterfeit in purity/contamination — all three of which can co-occur in security-state canon.
impunity
Slot-proven entries. The Invisible Man (Wells), Moll Flanders (Defoe). (Correction from skeleton: John Wick is tagged unleashing, not impunity — moved to the unleashing section.)
Backings present:
- Supernatural escape-the-check via invisibility — Griffin removes the external check entirely; the wish is named on the page as unaccountability itself. "An invisible man is a man of power" (l. 1791); "Because I've a particular objection to being caught by my fellow-men" (l. 3219); the savored vision is "the mystery, the power, the freedom" (l. 3576), escalating to "establish a Reign of Terror" (l. 4795). The affordance is precise: not strength, not godhood — exemption from accountability. Scientific-horror register. (The Invisible Man)
- Sustained social-cunning, never-caught over a long run — Moll's swagger is caused by the unaccountability, not by the act or the skill: "practice had hardened me, and I grew audacious to the last degree; and the more so because I had carried it on so long, and had never been taken" (ll. 7211-7212). The cleanly-excluded near-miss is Hornung's Raffles (unleashing-thrill + mastery-craft, not impunity — Raffles savors the danger-moment, not the getting-away). Picaresque-memoir register. (Moll Flanders)
The shared wish: escape from consequence itself as the payoff. Both specimens isolate from apotheosis (the power is specifically unaccountability, not supreme power); from unleashing (no pent-up capacity discharging — Griffin's Reign of Terror is cold-instrumental, Moll's gains are cumulative-procedural); from repricing (no recognition sought).
Backings missing:
- Corporate impunity — Pynchon's corporate antagonists (the Yoyodyne / Trystero apparatus), DeLillo's White Noise's Airborne Toxic Event corporate evasion, the executive walking away from the crash. Late-20c-21c American backing; the institutional version of Moll Flanders's never-caught at scale.
- Aristocratic impunity — Laclos's Les Liaisons Dangereuses; the libertine class's untouchability sustained by class-coordination. 18c French backing.
- Colonial impunity — Conrad's Heart of Darkness (Kurtz upriver, beyond European law's reach); some Forster, some Achebe-as-critique. 19c-20c imperial backing.
- Diplomatic immunity at the popular register — Lethal Weapon 2's villains; modern thrillers built around the literal version. Pop-culture backing.
- Internet-anonymity impunity — modern digital descendant of Wells's invisibility: the troll, the catfish, the doxxer, the anonymous abuser shielded by the screen. Late 20c-21c digital backing; pressing because the "check removed" mechanism is identical to Griffin's (technological invisibility) but commodified at scale.
- Patriarchal / domestic impunity — the abuser shielded by family privacy and social complicity. Some Roxane Gay, Jia Tolentino's Trick Mirror, much of #MeToo-era memoir.
Candidate-engine signals.
- State / arbitrary-power impunity as inversion — Kafka's The Trial features impunity but on the wrong side of the engine: the protagonist is the victim of state impunity, not the bearer. The wish-valence is inverted; what the work pays out to the reader is recognition of being-victimized-by-impunity, not the savor of being-impune. May run a different engine (oppression-experienced; possibly virtue of defeat at modernist-bureaucratic scope, closer to the Du Bois finding). Worth a slot-test on The Trial to decide.
abundance
Slot-proven entries. Ali Baba (Arabian Nights), A Little Princess (Burnett).
Backings present:
- Treasure-cave found-plenty (discovery mode) — Ali Baba enters via "Open Sesame," loads "as much of the gold coin as he thought his three asses could carry" (ll. 7190-7192), and the catalogue does the work: "all sorts of provisions, rich bales of silk stuff, brocade, and valuable carpeting, piled upon one another; gold and silver ingots in great heaps, and money in bags" (ll. 7182-7184). The heap dazzles. Oral folk-tale register; the plenty found, not given. (Ali Baba)
- Domestic-interior conferred-plenty (gift mode) — Sara wakes to find the bare attic transformed: "In the grate there was a glowing, blazing fire; on the hob was a little brass kettle hissing and boiling; spread upon the floor was a thick, warm crimson rug" (ll. 6168-6170), plus "a luxurious wadded robe of crimson silk" and "rich, hot, savory soup … and sandwiches and toast and muffins." Backed by a real giver (Mr. Carrisford); the magic has a banker. Victorian domestic-interior register; the plenty delivered, not found. (A Little Princess)
Both share the engine's load-bearing structure: scarcity remembered as the price-against (woodcutter poverty / bare attic and hunger); plenty really possessed (real gold carted home / real warmth and real soup); savored catalogue (itemized, lingered-over, heaped). The plenty is terminal, not instrumental — distinguishes spine from rider (Aladdin's jewels are a bride-price, abundance rides being-desired there).
The two backings differ on a sub-axis worth naming: discovery (the plenty was always-there-waiting to be entered) vs. gift (the plenty was conferred by another's deliberate act). Both feel like abundance to the reader; the mechanism is different.
Backings missing:
- Post-scarcity / tech-replicator — Star Trek replicator-economies, Banks's The Culture, full automated luxury communism. 20c-21c SF backing where the plenty is structural (the social-technological system delivers it) rather than discovered or gifted.
- Indigenous abundance-via-reciprocity — Kimmerer's gift-economy framing in Sweetgrass — the land's plenty as ongoing gift requiring the Honorable Harvest's obligations in return. Distinct from Little Princess's gift because it's recurring and conditional, not a one-time transfer. (Cross-reference: this is what Sweetgrass runs under belonging/caretaking backings; abundance is implicit but worth slot-testing as its own thread.)
- Communist post-revolution abundance — the promised plenty of "to each according to their needs." Soviet socialist-realism. Counterfeit-leaning in practice — the plenty is rhetorically asserted, often empirically absent.
- Modern lottery / windfall narratives — Slumdog Millionaire, Brewster's Millions, much of "rags-to-riches" pop-fiction. The plenty arrives by lucky strike — a third sub-mode beyond discovery and gift.
- Cornucopia mythology — Demeter's horn of plenty, Dionysus's wine miracles, the loaves-and-fishes Gospel beat. Classical and biblical backing; the plenty as divine-conferred.
- Capitalist boom-time consumer abundance — Gatsby's parties, the postwar American shopping-mall as utopia. The plenty is sustained by debt or fraud and unstable — counterfeit-leaning specimen for the engine's dual-use.
- Foraging / cottagecore — "plenty all around us if we only see it." Michael Pollan, Wendell Berry, the cottagecore aesthetic. Distinct from Sweetgrass's reciprocity by mode (the foraging "plenty" is hobbyist, not relational).
Candidate-engine signals.
- Religious heaven-as-plenty — Christian/Islamic depictions of paradise (rivers of milk, vine-clad gardens, the bridal feast). The plenty is post-mortal — slot 3 is not bearer-realizable on the page. May not fit abundance cleanly; possibly belongs under legacy/transcendence (the promised inheritance beyond death). Worth a slot-test on a specific passage (Revelation 21-22; Quranic Jannah descriptions) to decide.
- The discovery-vs-gift-vs-windfall sub-axis may eventually want explicit treatment if the catalog grows enough specimens to support it. Currently the two slot-proven entries cover discovery (Ali Baba) and gift (Little Princess); a windfall specimen (e.g., Slumdog Millionaire) would complete the three-mode picture.
virtue of defeat
Slot-proven entries. Apology (Plato/Socrates), Cyrano de Bergerac (Rostand).
Backings present:
- Renounced acquittal at the cost of life — Socrates had the winning move available ("if a man is willing to say and do anything") and refused it: "I would rather die having spoken after my manner, than speak in your manner and live" (Apology, ll. 1341-1342). The defeat is bought — the price of refusing the unrighteousness that would have won. Slot 3 is self-conferred ("a bad man is not permitted to injure a better than himself", ll. 1044-1047). Athenian forensic-philosophical backing. (Apology)
- Sustained renunciation of patronage + panache borne away in death — Cyrano refuses across the whole life ("Truth, Independence, are my fluttering plumes"; "Dream, laugh, go lightly, solitary, free") and at the moment of death declares the inversion explicit ("You strip from me the laurel and the rose! / Take all!" — but the panache is what he carries away himself). Secular romantic-heroic verse-drama backing. (Cyrano)
- Preemptive Stoic unshakeability — distinct from the Apology and Cyrano backings: the Stoic does not wait for a specific defeat to arrive but trains in advance to be undisturbed by any fortune. "All is opinion" (II.15); "no man loses any other life than this which he now lives" (II.14). The virtue-of-defeat stance taken before any defeat. (Meditations ~, partial — runs as also-runs to liberation in the Stoic specimens.)
- Collective-political renounced-compromise + self-conferred dignity — the engine at collective-racial scope. Du Bois names the unredeemed national debt ("The Nation has not yet found peace from its sins"), refuses the Booker T. Washington accommodationist deal (the available "victory" of material progress in exchange for accepting diminishment), and confers the dignity now, on his own authority, before any Nation grants it ("I sit with Shakespeare and he winces not … So, wed with Truth, I dwell above the Veil. Is this the life you grudge us, O knightly America?"). Structurally identical to Apology's self-conferred slot 3 but operating at the scope of a wronged people rather than a wronged individual. Black-radical American backing. (Souls of Black Folk ~)
Backings missing:
- Christian martyrdom — the renounced victory is recantation; the elevation comes partly through communion with Christ + the martyr's name remembered in the church. May pull toward legacy/transcendence or apotheosis depending on framing — worth a slot-test to decide. Acts of the Apostles, hagiographies, Foxe's Book of Martyrs.
- Confucian gentleman-out-of-power (the recluse poet) — Tao Yuanming's "I will not bow my back for five pecks of rice"; the principled withdrawal from corrupt office. Chinese tradition; Analects-inflected.
- Buddhist worldly-renunciation — the bhikshu's choice of mendicancy over wealth; Dhammapada v. 75 ("One is the road that leads to wealth, another the road that leads to Nirvana") gestures at it; cleaner specimens would be jataka tales.
- Black Christian liberation theology — Cone, MLK's "I've been to the mountaintop"; the suffering as sign of righteousness in the long arc of justice.
- Modern noble-loser narratives — Atticus Finch defending the wrongly-accused and losing the case; Don Quixote's defeat-as-vindication-of-the-quixotic-ideal; the "lost-cause" Civil War mythology (a counterfeit specimen).
- The Gita as anti-specimen — Krishna's whole discourse is the refutation of Arjuna's would-be virtue-of-defeat opening ("I would rather lose than slay my kindred"). The Gita is the catalog's clearest case of a work explicitly dismantling this engine's counterfeit pitch; useful as a contrastive entry rather than a positive specimen.
Candidate-engine signals. Christian martyrdom's elevation is partly externally conferred (by God, by the church's memorial recognition), which pulls it toward legacy/transcendence or apotheosis. The engine may need to handle a "partially-bearer-realized" sub-case explicitly; or martyrdom may belong somewhere else entirely. Worth a slot-test on a specific case (a named early-church martyr) to decide.
homecoming/reunion
Slot-proven entries. The Odyssey (Homer), The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Baum).
Backings present:
- Nostos — longing for home outweighing immortality — Ulysses "is tired of life, and thinks of nothing but how he may once more see the smoke of his own chimneys" (l. 429); Calypso "wanted to make me immortal that I might never grow old, but she could not persuade me to let her do so" (ll. 3203-3205). The ten-year voyage and the refused-immortality are the backing; the prior place chosen over a better new condition isolates the engine from belonging. Greek epic backing. (Odyssey)
- Refusal of beautiful elsewhere for gray home — Dorothy refuses the offered Emerald City for "dull and gray" Kansas. The isolation from belonging is named explicitly on the page: "No matter how dreary and gray our homes are, we people of flesh and blood would rather live there than in any other country, be it ever so beautiful. There is no place like home" (ll. 744-745). American children's-fantasy backing. (Wizard of Oz)
Both share the engine's load-bearing structure: the bearer refuses a better option (immortality / a beautiful new world) to return to a less-glamorous prior place. The wish is for the prior bond/place as such — distinguishes the engine from belonging on its load-bearing axis.
Backings missing:
- Diaspora multi-generational return-to-homeland — Yaa Gyasi's Homegoing, Alex Haley's Roots, Zionist literature, Japanese-American post-WWII return narratives. Distinct from the Odyssey/Oz pattern because the "home" is constructed across generations of separation rather than personally remembered.
- African return-narratives ("Year of Return") — Ta-Nehisi Coates's Between the World and Me (partial); the return-to-Africa as imaginative reconstruction across the trans-Atlantic rupture. The home is ancestrally one's own but not personally so. Black-American backing.
- Chinese qingming / ancestor-return — the festival of returning to the ancestral grave, sweeping the tombs. Confucian-ritual backing where the return is to the dead, recurrent, formal.
- Veterans' homecoming in modern register — The Best Years of Our Lives, Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried and Going After Cacciato. The Odyssey beat lifted into 20c war-fiction; the return often disrupted by what the veteran brings home (trauma, inability to re-fit).
- Reunion-with-estranged-parent / adoption-reunion — long-lost-parent narratives, adoption-search memoirs. The bond is prior in principle but never previously consummated — possibly pressing the engine; see candidate signal.
- Indigenous return-to-country — central to many Aboriginal Australian and Native American narratives; tied to land-knowledge and ancestor-presence. Touched by Sand Talk's songlines passages and Sweetgrass's Skywoman frame, but a dedicated specimen would help.
Candidate-engine signals.
- Refugee / displacement narratives where the return is blocked — Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner (partial), Viet Thanh Nguyen's The Sympathizer, Mahmoud Darwish's poetry. The engine's slot 3 does not consummate — the home is unrecoverable, the bond severed by force. Parallels the Du Bois finding under virtue of defeat: the wish is offered, the payoff is refused by external force, the work may run mourning the impossible return — which structurally may be virtue of defeat at displacement-scope rather than homecoming/reunion. Worth a slot-test.
- Adoption-reunion presses the engine because the prior bond was never personally consummated to be returned to. If the engine requires "return to a place/bond you previously knew," adoption-reunion stretches it (the bond is biological/imagined-prior rather than experientially-prior). May extend the engine's slot 1 or may belong under belonging (first-time admission to a tribe one is biologically of).
unleashing
Slot-proven entries. The Count of Monte Cristo (Dumas), The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (Stevenson), John Wick (Stahelski et al.).
Backings present:
- Chemical-potion as license to ride the alter-self — the clean specimen of the revised slots. The Hyde-self is named as innate ("man is not truly one, but truly two", l. 2026) and hidden by chosen lifelong restraint ("I hidden my pleasures … I regarded and hid them with an almost morbid sense of shame"). The potion is welcomed: "stripped off these lendings and spring headlong into the sea of liberty" (ll. 2183-2186). The catharsis is the savored discharge: "I felt younger, lighter, happier in body … braced and delighted me like wine" (ll. 2090-2097). Victorian gothic backing. (Jekyll and Hyde)
- Self-anointed providence license (impure specimen) — the slot-3 fills cleanly but slot 1 is innocence rather than chosen restraint (Faria: "you must have had a very confiding nature, as well as a good heart, not to have suspected"), and slot 2 is self-authored rather than externally triggered ("I wish to be Providence myself … the most beautiful, noblest, most sublime thing in the world, is to recompense and punish"). The text prosecutes its own trigger via Mercédès ("And why do you represent Providence?"). The impurity is itself the finding — the cleanest demonstration cupel has of an engine running with a load-bearing slot soft. 19c French historical-romance backing. (Monte Cristo)
- External-event license on screen, mythologized by witnesses — the method-edge specimen. The dog's death is the discrete trigger ("your son took that from me! ... Killed that from me!"). The restrained capacity is established not by narration but by the antagonist's mythologizing: "Baba Yaga … man of focus, commitment, sheer will … I once saw him kill three men in a bar. With a pencil" (as-shot). Draft-vs-shot finding: the as-shot enlargements (Baba Yaga, the pencil-kill, "I'm retired" relocated into John's own mouth) are the production manufacturing the slot-1 interiority a screen medium otherwise lacks. 21c action-film backing. (John Wick)
Shared wish: the discharge of a held-back capacity, welcomed, savored. The wish-valence guard: the protagonist wants the unleashing (vs. redemption's dreaded reckoning).
Backings missing:
- Dionysian bacchic frenzy — Euripides's Bacchae; the maenads' frenzy as religiously-licensed collective unleashing. Classical backing. Distinct from the three present specimens by being collective and religiously-sanctioned.
- War-time license to violate ordinary norms — Catch-22, parts of Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five, much WWII fiction. The war as discrete event that licenses extraordinary violence; runs partly genuine and partly counterfeit (the engine's classic dual-use).
- Carnivalesque temporary inversion (Bakhtin's territory) — Rabelais's Gargantua and Pantagruel. Time-bound ritual inversion with a built-in return-to-restraint. Press signal: see candidate.
- Female-anger unleashing in 1970s-2010s feminist register — Audre Lorde's "The Uses of Anger," Soraya Chemaly's Rage Becomes Her. The cultural license to discharge previously-restrained female fury. Press signal: see candidate.
- Berserker / amok cross-cultural specimens — Norse warrior frenzy, Malay amok. Cross-cultural warrior-frenzy backing distinct from the Western individual-vengeance pattern.
- Punk / countercultural license — the moment of refusing the polite-society restraint. Please Kill Me (Legs McNeil), some Patti Smith memoir. Modern American.
Candidate-engine signals.
- Carnivalesque (Rabelais, Bakhtin) presses the engine because the license is temporary by design and the restraint is re-resumed at the end. The wish-payout structure differs: not the discharge made permanent (Jekyll's slide into pure Hyde) but the discharge bracketed within a ritual frame. May extend unleashing to admit bracketed-temporary sub-cases, or may run a candidate engine ("ritual inversion"). Worth a slot-test on Rabelais.
- Female-anger unleashing presses the engine because the restraint is socially imposed rather than personally chosen (Jekyll's morbid shame is a personal stance; the restraint of female fury is structural). This may pull toward liberation/autonomy with the social-imposition backing rather than unleashing — same shape as the Du Bois finding that collective-political wrongs belong under virtue of defeat at extended scope. A slot-test on Lorde's essay would decide whether unleashing extends or whether the work belongs elsewhere.
being-desired
Slot-proven entries. Twilight (Meyer), A Court of Thorns and Roses (Maas), Fifty Shades of Grey (James), Fourth Wing (Yarros, joint with apotheosis).
Backings present:
- Vampire-as-helpless, ordinariness inexplicably irresistible — Bella "ivory-skinned" and unrelatable; Edward's "you are exactly my brand of heroin" and "you fascinate me … you don't see yourself clearly at all." Slot 1 is unseeable rather than priced-low. The engine's first specimen surfaced the election leak (Bella's singing blood / opaque mind) the next specimen controls. Modern YA-romance backing. (Twilight)
- Fae-mate-thorns-and-all (election leak controlled) — Feyre as "illiterate, ignorant human" who is interchangeable ("one human girl," "human worm") and desired anyway; Tamlin's "I want you here" + "Thorns and all." The control on Twilight's leak: no cosmic mark, the desire is bodily. Modern romantasy backing. (ACOTAR)
- Billionaire-bewitched (repricing-contaminant refused) — Ana "plain" and "out of his league"; Christian "I'm like a moth to a flame … I can't leave you alone" + "Oh, Anastasia, you've bewitched me." The repricing temptation (material elevation: the Audi, the laptop, the Tess first edition) is real and large, but the heroine refuses it ("I can't accept these"). The work began as Twilight fanfic; the convergence hardens the being-desired↔repricing boundary. Modern erotica backing. (Fifty Shades)
- Dragon-bonded-warrior-as-she-is, body never fixed — Violet's chronically-injuring connective-tissue body is the maximally-different slot-1 (Bella ordinary → Ana plain → Feyre poor → Violet somatically breakable). Xaden's "I always fucking want you" + Violet's body's training-but-never-cured: "that doesn't…fix me." The wish-valence guard at its strongest yet — the body is the one thing she cannot simply be revalued out of, and the desire stays unconditional. Modern romantasy backing. (Fourth Wing)
The engine has been extensively slot-tested — four specimens, each maximally different along a tested axis (ordinariness → plainness → low-status → disabled body), with the election leak and the repricing-contaminant both controlled by named specimens. The wish-valence guard (desired-as-she-is, no body or trait reversal) is the cupel catalog's most-tested engine guard.
Backings missing:
- Petrarchan / courtly love — Petrarch's Canzoniere, Dante's Beatrice, Sidney's Astrophil and Stella. The lover sustains the desire from afar, often unrequited. Slot 3 (chosen) may not consummate — Petrarch never has Laura. See candidate signal.
- Brontë's destructive-obsessive backing — Wuthering Heights. Heathcliff and Catherine; the being-desired wish at its self-destructive pole. Counterfeit-leaning specimen — the desire warps both parties.
- Sally Rooney contemporary-realistic — Normal People. The being-desired wish in literary-realistic register with class/awkwardness texture and constant negotiation. The slot 3 is repeatedly re-tested rather than consummated once.
- Queer being-desired — Hollinghurst's The Line of Beauty, Maupin's Tales of the City, Garth Greenwell's What Belongs to You. The engine in queer registers; surfaces different slot-1 dynamics (the closet, social rejection layered on top of ordinariness).
- Shrek-style being-desired-as-monster — the body actively repellent rather than merely plain; the desire affirms the monstrous form. Cross-reference: already in Shrek.
- Maternal being-wanted-by-infant — distinct from caretaking — the wish is being needed/wanted unconditionally by a helpless other. The desirer is the baby. Some Anne Lamott (Operating Instructions), Rachel Cusk's A Life's Work. Possibly a distinct sub-case or may belong under caretaking with valence shift.
- Being-desired by the audience / parasocial — modern celebrity culture: the wish to be wanted by the unspecified crowd. Distinct from individual desire; likely runs solvent (fame) rather than the engine.
Candidate-engine signals.
- Sufi being-desired-as-mystical-union (Rumi, Hafez, Attar's Conference of the Birds) — the Beloved is divine; the consummation is mystical/post-mortal. Slot 3 may not be bearer-realizable on the page. May press the engine toward admitting mystical-non-consummating sub-cases, or may belong under apotheosis (the union as ascent) or legacy/transcendence (the soul's post-mortal arrival). Worth a slot-test on a specific Rumi ghazal.
- Petrarchan unrequited desire — same shape as Sufi (sustained desire whose consummation is deferred or refused). May press the engine similarly. Slot-test on Petrarch 134 ("Pace non trovo") would decide whether being-desired admits desiring-from-the-other-side (the lover's wish to be the one who wants, distinct from the wish to be wanted) — which would be a candidate engine in its own right ("longing-as-vocation").
recognition
Slot-proven entries. Giovanni's Room (Baldwin), Stone Butch Blues (Feinberg), Zami — A New Spelling of My Name (Lorde), On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous (Vuong), The Argonauts (Nelson), Fun Home (Bechdel), Tales of the City (Babycakes; Significant Others) (Maupin), The Vanishing Half (Bennett); also recognition fires at also-runs strength in What Belongs to You (Greenwell — wound-spine specimen).
Slot semantics. Slot 1: the bearer perceives a self the world will not (or cannot) correctly witness. Slot 2: the cost paid for the configuration of bearer-and-witness — the configuration's mechanism varies by pole and sub-register. Slot 3: the engine resolves at one of four primary poles, but the cross-specimen synthesis surfaces that the pole-space runs on two axes:
- Axis A — the bearer's stance toward the witness. Refused / sought / affirmed / addressed-to-the-impossible.
- Axis B — the witness's reception capability, and the agency of any refusal. Alive-reachable-receiving / alive-receiving-but-refusing-the-bearer / alive-unreceiving-by-structural-incapacity (illiteracy, language-gap) / dead-but-textually-residual / asymmetric (the witness cannot land due to structural inequality).
The four primary poles run cleanest at the diagonals — Baldwin's refused-pole runs alongside a witness who could see and the bearer refuses; Vuong's addressed-to-the-impossible runs alongside a witness who cannot receive. But the cross-specimen findings (Greenwell's father; Bechdel's father; Maupin's network) surface that axis B is at least as load-bearing as axis A — the same primary pole admits multiple register-mechanisms depending on the witness's condition and agency.
The affirmed pole admits a slot-proven sub-mode: mutual-loose-witness — mutual bearing across change — held at both dyad scale (Nelson) and network scale (Maupin). The sub-mode names a mechanism (mutual bearing across change, relation held loosely) at multiple configurations (pair, circle), distinct from Lorde's affirmed-as-biomythography (retrospective chain of fixed witnesses).
The addressed-to-the-impossible pole admits two sibling sub-registers under one pole-category (recognition-across-a-structural-impossibility-of-confirmation): alive-but-illiterate (Vuong) and dead-but-textually-residual (Bechdel).
The refused pole admits two sub-registers by axis-B agency: bearer-flees-witness (Baldwin, Bennett) and witness-refuses-to-witness-the-bearer (Greenwell's father). Both share the refusal-of-recognition signature; the agency differs. The bearer-flees-witness sub-register is now confirmed at two registers (sexual-political at Baldwin, racial-political at Bennett) with a register-specific within-pole modulation at slot-3 — the racial-passing register admits a fugitive partial witness-extension to one familial inheritor (the bearer's daughter holds the secret) without unmaking the refusal, where Baldwin's sexual-political register at the 1956 expatriate substrate does not.
Backings present:
- Refused-pole, mid-20c American expatriate confession — David at the window watches his foreign reflection; the witness Giovanni offers is fled at the cost of Giovanni's life; the closing morning pieces blow back ("the wind blows some of them back on me", l. 2377). The bearer's commitment is to NOT be the man the witness would correctly see; the engine runs by refusing to stop running. American gay literary canon. (Giovanni's Room ✓)
- Sought-pole, working-class butch decades-long arc — Jess Goldberg across mid-late-20c US (Buffalo, NYC); the slot-2 cost paid in serial fragmentary witness-relations and the structural impossibility of integration ("Is it animal, mineral, or vegetable?", l. 1604); slot-3 fills as the engine continuing rather than resolving — Ruth's upstate signal at the closing (l. 8904) is the witness-set incompletely-achieved. Distinct from the refused pole by the bearer's seeking the witness rather than fleeing; distinct from the affirmed pole by the incompleteness of the witness-set actually constructed. Stone-butch / butch-FTM transition literature. (Stone Butch Blues ✓)
- Affirmed-pole, biomythographic multi-witness chain — Lorde's matrilineal witness-set (Linda, Aunt Anni, Ma-Liz, Ma-Mariah, Afrekete as symbolic Carriacou); the bearer-constructs-the-chain by writing it ("Zami", l. 4478); the slot-2 cost paid in standing apart from the white women's couples-circles that hurt (l. 4315) and in the labor of the construction itself; the closing list (l. 4482) names the witness-set as the engine's resolution. Biomythography as the formal achievement that makes the witness-set possible — the genre invention IS the slot-2 cost. Black lesbian Caribbean-American literary tradition. (Zami ✓)
- Addressed-to-the-impossible-witness pole, the unsendable-letter form — Vuong's queer Vietnamese-American narrator writes a book-length letter to his mother who cannot read English; the witness is the addressee throughout, and the structural impossibility of her reading is the slot-2 condition that enables the writing's fullest form ("the very impossibility of your reading this is all that makes my telling it possible", l. 1545). The slot-3 closes on a conditional reincarnation maybe (l. 4488) — the engine is kept in perpetual address rather than resolved. Distinct from the sought pole by the direct address (not a search through fragmentary relations); distinct from the affirmed pole by the single addressee (not a constructed chain); distinct from the refused pole by the bearer's full offering (not a flight from the witness). Queer Vietnamese-American diaspora literary register. (On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous ✓)
- Mutual-loose-witness sub-mode of the affirmed pole at dyad scale — Nelson and her partner Harry across the years of his transition (T + top surgery) and her pregnancy with Iggy; the slot-1 condition is the surrounding social grammar's inability to name the relation ("the words are not good enough", l. 187); the slot-2 cost paid in the labor of mutual bearing across both bearers' ongoing bodily transformation, named at the Sheraton load-bearing passage ("we were two human animals undergoing transformations beside each other, bearing each other loose witness", l. 985); the slot-3 fills at the Argonaut metaphor — the boat renewed by every utterance but remaining the boat (l. 145) — and at the closing's "ablaze with our care, its ongoing song" (l. 1557). Distinct from Lorde's affirmed register by the paired-and-transforming witness-pair (two live changing bearers, not a constructed chain of fixed retrospective witnesses). Contemporary queer-theory-and-memoir register. (The Argonauts ✓ — also a slot-proven belonging specimen at the constructive-rather-than-joined register; sub-mode confirmed at network scale via Maupin — see backing #7.)
- Posthumous-reconstruction-of-the-witness register — Bechdel's Fun Home: Alison comes out at twenty, learns days later that her father was a closeted gay man, and four months later her father steps in front of a truck. The slot-1 condition is the bearer's coming-out unfolding the witness's parallel-but-prior queerness ("I am a lesbian", l. 2316; "I'd been upstaged, demoted from protagonist in my own drama to...", l. 2334-37). Slot-2 paid in the lost four-month window between recognition and death ("I had imagined my confession as an emancipation from my parents, but instead I was pulled back into their orbit. And with my father's death following so hard on the heels of this doleful coming-out party", l. 2351-77). Slot-3 fills as the book itself: the witness is reconstructed after death, through the literary apparatus he taught her to read (Joyce, Wilde, Camus, Proust, Fitzgerald). Sibling sub-mode of Vuong's addressed-to-the-impossible pole — Vuong's witness is alive-but-illiterate (cannot read English); Bechdel's witness is dead-but-textually-residual. Distinct mechanisms (literacy vs death) under a common pole-category: recognition-across-a-structural-impossibility-of-confirmation. Contemporary graphic-memoir register. (Fun Home ✓; see Fun Home)
- Mutual-loose-witness sub-mode of the affirmed pole at network scale — Maupin's Tales of the City (read here at Babycakes + Significant Others, the 1991 collected pair): the chosen-family at 28 Barbary Lane held together by the trans landlady Anna Madrigal across decades. Mary Ann, Michael "Mouse" Tolliver, Brian, Mona, and Anna are multiple live transforming bearers; the witness-network is mutual (each bearer is held by the others, not by an asymmetric witness as in Greenwell's Mitko relation) and loose (the relation tolerates each bearer's change — Mary Ann's career arc, Michael's HIV-era trajectory, Brian's marriage strain). Same mechanism as Nelson's at dyad scale (mutual bearing across change, relation held loosely); different scale (network of N>2 rather than dyad). Confirms the mutual-loose-witness sub-mode by scale-generalization — the sub-mode names a mechanism, not a configuration; scale is a register variable beneath the sub-mode. Contemporary chosen-family-serial-novel register. Also a slot-proven belonging specimen at the constructive-rather-than-joined register at network scale. See Tales of the City (Babycakes; Significant Others). (Tales of the City ✓)
- Refused-pole at the witness-refuses-to-witness register — Greenwell's What Belongs to You (wound-spine specimen; recognition fires at also-runs strength). The bearer's father refused to be the witness the bearer needed after the bearer was discovered to be gay; the father is now dying (the office-page scene at the opening of Part II). Distinct from Baldwin's refused pole (bearer-flees-witness) by the axis-B agency of refusal — the witness here refuses, not the bearer. Same primary pole (refused); different sub-register by witness-agency. Contemporary American-expatriate literary register. (What Belongs to You ✓ — wound-spine; recognition at also-runs)
- Refused-pole at the racial-passing register, bearer-flees-witness sub-register — Bennett's The Vanishing Half: Stella Vignes leaves Mallard, Louisiana (the colorism-utopia town founded as "a town for men like him, who would never be accepted as white but refused to be treated like Negroes. A third place", l. 342), is read as white at a white-collar workplace, accepts the misreading, marries her boss, raises a white daughter, lives the rest of her life in a Los Angeles cul-de-sac. The slot-2 cost lands cleanly on the racial-political axis with a register-specific mechanism: active performance of the negation — Stella rises in a homeowners'-association meeting to oppose a Black family moving onto the block ("You must stop them, Percy ... Enough is enough!", l. 5546-7) and is afterward "startled to see her own words reflected back to her, as foreign as if they'd come from a stranger" (l. 5559-61). The slot-3 fills at the refusal-preserved with a within-pole modulation: Stella permits one fugitive witness-extension — telling her daughter Kennedy the truth, giving Desiree her wedding ring in a single off-page visit ("I gave it to my sister. She needs it more than I do", l. 12429) — without breaking the construction her husband and the world see. At her mother's funeral she is structurally absent; Jude can only imagine her "sitting in that pew, Stella worrying her fingers along a strand of rosary beads, joining her sister in silent grief" (l. 13136-37). Distinct from Baldwin's refused-pole at the sexual-political register by the register-shift; same axis-A shape (bearer flees witness) with a register-permitted slot-3 modulation (familial fugitive inheritance the racial-passing substrate makes available without unmaking the refusal). Contemporary literary fiction, racial-passing register. (The Vanishing Half ✓)
- Sought-pole at trans-women register — the slot-1 condition doubles at this register (the world cannot witness the bearer's transition-completed self correctly AND her configuration of relations cannot accommodate her continued evolution past the moment of transition). The register admits two slot-3 sub-modes at the foreclosure-adjacent end of the spectrum, no completion-resolved specimen yet confirmed:
- Honest-foreclosure — Binnie's Nevada: slot-3 fills as the bearer's active acknowledgment that the wish-shape's mechanism (project-onto-junior-bearer-to-recognize-self) is structurally non-functional. Maria projects onto James in Star City ("that kid is trans and he doesn't even know it yet", l. 1897), drives him to Reno, runs the elder-to-junior recognition-monologue, and the projection-mechanism fails — Maria forgets him in the casino (l. 2758); James drifts back to his girlfriend Nicole (l. 2785). The book stakes itself on rendering the non-functionality clean. See Nevada. (Nevada ✓)
- Autonomy-suspended — Peters's Detransition, Baby: slot-3 fills as the bearer's acceptance of structural suspension by another bearer's autonomous choice she must honor. Reese seeks motherhood as the configuration that would confer womanhood (the Sex and the City Problem, l. 158-160); the trio-coparenting proposal (Reese as co-mother / Ames as not-quite-father / Katrina as biological mother) would have landed the substrate-conferred recognition; the novel ends on the morning of Katrina's scheduled abortion with the three in silence over tea ("They are together, and miles from each other ... contemplating how her tenuous rendition of womanhood has become dependent upon the existence of this little person, who is not yet, and yet may not be", l. 4966). The bearer's wish-shape is preserved (Reese still wants what she wants); the substrate is preserved (motherhood-as-recognition is possible in principle); the completion is gated by another bearer's autonomy the bearer is structurally required to honor. Distinct from honest-foreclosure by the wish-shape being preserved rather than acknowledged-as-foreclosed. Belonging fires at also-runs strength at a constructive-family-form-collapsed-before-completing register; the autonomy-suspended slot-3 applies for belonging too within this specimen. See Detransition, Baby. (Detransition, Baby ✓)
Distinct from refused (Baldwin: bearer flees; Greenwell-father: witness refuses) by the seeking-still-being-load-bearing; distinct from addressed-to-impossible (Vuong: perpetual address to an alive-but-illiterate witness) by the witness being reachable. Contemporary trans-women literary register.
Cross-engine register-classes at slot-3. Three register-classes are now named at slot-3, each engine-level-orthogonal (running beneath multiple engines with the same slot-3 register-shape):
- Foreclosure-at-slot-3 (6 specimens / 4 engines, the umbrella; two sub-classes named below). The umbrella names a slot-3 register where the engine's resolution is its own foreclosure, the work staking the withholding as the engine's content. The sub-classes split by where the foreclosure is performed — at the bearer's level (bearer-acknowledged) or at the work's level (author-rendered) — and the split is now confirmed orthogonal to engine (legacy holds both sub-classes via Hartman bearer-acknowledged + Orange author-rendered; recognition holds bearer-acknowledged via Bechdel and Binnie; virtue-of-defeat holds author-rendered via Bolaño; liberation/autonomy holds author-rendered via Ishiguro). The sub-class split operates BENEATH the umbrella register-class, not within any particular engine:
- Bearer-acknowledged foreclosure (3 specimens / 2 engines): the bearer actively acknowledges the wish-shape's substrate-mechanism as non-functional, held as the resolution. Specimens: Hartman Lose Your Mother (legacy #6, non-fictional-foreclosure / mechanism: historical-record-discontinuity); Bechdel Fun Home (recognition #6, posthumous-reconstruction / mechanism: witness-death); Binnie Nevada (recognition #10, honest-foreclosure / mechanism: projection-mechanism-failure). All three collapse author and bearer (memoir / autofiction) or bring the bearer's explicit acknowledgment to the textual surface. The book-itself-as-the-engine's-honest-failure IS the resolution.
- Author-rendered foreclosure (3 specimens / 3 engines): the work-itself stakes the engine's foreclosure as structural commitment; the bearer is held within the unresolved condition without explicit acknowledgment. Specimens: Bolaño 2666 (virtue-of-defeat / mechanism: the Santa Teresa femicides catalogued without solving — the investigators-bearers fail without naming the failure-as-the-engine; the work stakes the withholding); Ishiguro Klara and the Sun (liberation/autonomy at the lifted-vs-unlifted register / mechanism: the engine's slot-3 withheld — Rick's application outcome left ambiguous, the structural injustice unchanged at close — bearer Rick is held in the unresolved without acknowledging it); Orange There There (legacy/transcendence at the urban-Indigenous-displacement substrate / mechanism: the multi-bearer convergence on the Oakland Powwow foreclosed by a shooting before any bearer's slot-3 completes — the work stakes the foreclosure of the gathering-as-reclamation as the engine's structural slot-3). Bearer can be unaware or held-mid-firing; the foreclosure is the author's structural commitment to withholding the resolution the substrate could in principle grant.
The two sub-classes are distinct registers, not merely two ways the same register can be performed. Bearer-acknowledged foreclosure produces a different narrative shape (the bearer's act of acknowledgment is the slot-3 fill) than author-rendered (the work's structural withholding is the slot-3 fill, often surfaced through formal techniques — Bolaño's catalogue-discipline, Ishiguro's unresolved-injustice held throughout). They share the umbrella foreclosure-at-slot-3 by virtue of the engine's resolution being its own non-completion.
- Coerced-preservation (1 specimen / 1 engine, signal): the substrate enforces preservation of the wish-shape's completion at the bearer's physical cost; the bearer's slot-3 act is the physical absorption of the enforcement. Specimen: Butler Kindred (legacy #6, fictional-coerced-preservation / mechanism: speculative-time-travel substrate forces the bearer across the rupture). One-specimen signal; not yet cross-engine confirmed. Cross-engine probe via Butler Parable of the Sower (2026-06-07) returned negative — Lauren's hyperempathy is substrate-imposed slot-1/slot-2 chronic condition the bearer carries while building toward completion-elsewhere (Earthseed at Acorn), not substrate-enforcement at the slot-3 surface; the test sharpens the definition to enforcement-act IS the slot-3 act (the Kindred shape), excluding chronic-disability-as-substrate-imposed-condition. See Parable of the Sower.
- Autonomy-suspended (1 specimen / 2 engines within one specimen, signal): the bearer's wish-shape is preserved; the substrate is preserved; the completion is gated by another bearer's autonomous choice the bearer is structurally required to honor; the slot-3 fills as the bearer's honoring of the gating despite cost. Specimen: Peters Detransition, Baby — recognition #10 at the autonomy-suspended sub-mode (spine) + belonging at the constructive-family-form-collapsed-before-completing register (also-runs). One-specimen signal at two engines within the specimen; needs a different-specimen cross-engine test.
Discriminations between the classes: foreclosure-at-slot-3 (both sub-classes) has the substrate REFUSING completion AND the work or bearer STAKING that refusal; coerced-preservation has the substrate ENFORCING completion AT PHYSICAL COST; autonomy-suspended has the substrate's completion GATED BY ANOTHER BEARER'S AUTONOMY. All three are distinct from unresolved (the engine is still firing without resolution — wound at the lifelong-cost register, e.g. Greenwell — the narrative stops mid-firing without the foreclosure being structurally staked) and from refused pole slot-3 (where the bearer's wish-shape itself refuses the witnessing configuration).
The register-classes appear to be slot-3 register-classes at a level beneath the engine, structurally analogous to how the four primary poles operate within the recognition engine. The umbrella foreclosure-at-slot-3 now covers 6 specimens at 4 engines (legacy, recognition, virtue-of-defeat, liberation/autonomy); the engine-orthogonality claim graduates from strong-hypothesis to robust finding; the within-umbrella sub-class split (bearer-acknowledged ↔ author-rendered) is also engine-orthogonal (confirmed via legacy at both sub-classes after the Orange addition). Coerced-preservation and autonomy-suspended remain at 1-specimen signals; cross-engine confirmation needs slot-tests at engines not yet confirmed (especially apotheosis, mastery, vindication, repricing, comeuppance). Klara's caretaking slot-3 (Klara accepting the slow fade after Josie no longer needs her) and Klara's virtue-of-defeat slot-3 (the substantive religion honored as meaningful while its mechanism stays unverifiable) surface as distinct slot-3 register-shapes the foreclosure umbrella does NOT cover — completion-then-graceful-decline and unverifiability-honored respectively — flagged here as candidate register-classes worth further specimens before naming formally.
Backings missing (with where they'd come from):
- Refused-pole at familial register — recognition refused inside the family of origin rather than in expatriation. James Baldwin Go Tell It on the Mountain (in-copyright), Alice Walker The Color Purple. Morrison Song of Solomon was slot-tested against this hypothesis and does not fill the hole — it runs legacy/transcendence at the ancestral-name-recovery register, not recognition. The discrimination — family-misrecognition conditions are slot-1 substrate for either engine depending on the bearer's wish-shape, witness vs name — is worked through in Song of Solomon.
- Sought-pole at trans-women register, slot-3 resolved as completion — backing #10 now holds two distinct foreclosure-adjacent sub-modes (honest-foreclosure via Binnie, autonomy-suspended via Peters) and ZERO completion-resolved specimens. Whether the sought pole at the trans-women register can complete (rather than foreclose or hold suspended) remains open. The narrower question after two slot-tests: is the completion-resolved slot-3 structurally unavailable at this register, or only unwitnessed in literature so far?
- Affirmed-pole without the biomythographic invention — a witness-set constructed and held without the bearer having to invent the genre to do so. Bechdel Fun Home was slot-tested against this hypothesis and runs a different pole entirely (posthumous-reconstruction sub-mode of addressed-to-the-impossible — see backing #6). The Nelson + Maupin mutual-loose-witness sub-mode covers a substantial portion of the affirmed-without-biomythography space at the contemporary-queer register, but at the paired-and-transforming sub-register specifically; the fixed-and-contemporaneous affirmed-pole hole stays open. James Baldwin If Beale Street Could Talk may run the affirmed pole at the romantic-witness register.
- Refused-pole at racial-passing register — Nella Larsen Passing, Charles Chesnutt's color-line stories. The slot-1 condition (perceived as not-what-one-is) holds the same shape, but the slot-2 cost lands on the bearer's racial-political position rather than the sexual-political position Baldwin's David faces.
- Sought-pole at religious-conversion-and-return register — recognition sought by leaving and returning to a tradition that could correctly witness the bearer. James Baldwin's Go Tell It on the Mountain may run this register as well, at the church-witness slot.
Candidate-engine signals. Two surfaced during the recognition slot-tests and were resolved:
- Transition-as-becoming — proposed during the Feinberg slot-test, dissolved. Jess's transition is in service of recognition (slot-2 cost paid to reach a witness-set), not its own wish; testosterone is started and stopped as the witness-set conditions change. Confirmed as a slot-2 mechanism under recognition-sought rather than a sibling engine.
- Chosen family — observed across the first four specimens as a belonging variant (peer-collective, no leader, no enclosure). Tested against the canonical chosen-family memoir (Nelson The Argonauts) and DISSOLVED: chosen-family is belonging at the constructive-rather-than-joined register, paying the slot-2 cost in family-form-construction rather than in a structurally novel mechanism. The candidate folds into belonging.
wound
Slot-proven entries. Notes from the Underground (Dostoevsky), The Catcher in the Rye (Salinger), A Little Life (Yanagihara), Lolita (Nabokov, character-engine layer at Humbert), Notre-Dame de Paris (Hugo, Frollo bearer), Lord Foul's Bane (Donaldson, Covenant bearer), Beloved (Morrison, multi-engine), Kindred (Butler, coerced-witness register), What Belongs to You (Greenwell, gay-childhood-with-rejecting-father register).
Engine wish-shape. The bearer's wish is the wound preserved as identity-ground. The mechanism axis the engine runs on — gratify-by-refusing-to-give — was named in the 2026-06-05 wound graduation. Cures are offered, each at on-page narrative cost; the bearer refuses each; the refusal IS the gratification. The slot-3 fills as the bearer-realizable identity-statement preserving the wound through every intervention. The wish-valence guard returns NO categorically: the bearer would NOT accept a cure-without-cost that erased the wound, because the wound is the ground on which the bearer's identity stands.
Three branches by wound-origin. The engine admits three branches by who/what caused the wound:
- Self-administered branch — the bearer's wound is created or preserved through the bearer's own acts. The Underground Man's spite-fever and over-active consciousness as wound-as-identity (slot-1 "I am a sick man ... I am a wicked man"); the cures explicitly named and refused (medicine, society, the romantic-intimacy with Liza); slot-3 at "there is more life in me than in you" — the wound as the only basis on which the bearer outranks the cured. The closing meta-frame generalizes the wound from bearer-engine to reader-engine ("we are all cripples"). Russian-modernist founding specimen. (Notes from the Underground ✓)
- Witnessed branch — the bearer's wound is created by witnessing another's wounding. Holden's Allie-wound: the brother dead, the fist Holden put through the garage windows the night he died; slot-2 the refused cures (psychiatry as "such a stupid question"; the Antolini scene as the canonical refused-cure-of-the-wise-elder); slot-3 the wound preserved into the rest-home narration frame. Mid-20c American second-specimen. (Catcher in the Rye ✓)
- Received branch — the bearer's wound is delivered from elsewhere (childhood abuse, parental rejection, romantic-prototype obsession) and the bearer preserves it. Three slot-proven sub-modes by what was received:
- Received-then-preserved childhood abuse — Jude's childhood-abuse arc preserved as permanent leg damage and lifelong self-harm across forty years (slot-1); every cure-shape (Andy's psychiatrist offer, Harold's legal adoption, Willem's partnership, the friend-network interventions) refused at categorical narrative cost while the bearer articulates the cure-refusal in his own voice ("I need it. It makes things right" — slot-2); Willem's death triggers the suicide as terminal ratification ("It isn't only that he died, or how he died; it is what he died believing" — slot-3). Yanagihara's stated "create a protagonist who never got better" clears the wish-valence guard at structural-design level. Contemporary literary-fiction. (A Little Life ✓)
- Received-then-preserved romantic-prototype obsession — Humbert's foundational obsession with the Annabel-prototype carried from childhood is slot-1 ("the poison was in the wound, and the wound remained ever open"); slot-2 across three explicitly-refused cures (psychiatry trifled with, adult-women cure faked via Valeria-as-imitation-of-Annabel, silence rejected for the 380-page prison confession); slot-3 at the closing address-to-Lolita ("And this is the only immortality you and I may share, my Lolita"). (ii)/(iv) split-result specimen: character-engine wound-spine at Humbert, reader-engine resister at the implication-payout layer. Modernist split-result specimen. (Lolita ✓)
- Received-then-preserved obsession-as-curse — Frollo's ἈΝÁΓΚΗ-carved-on-the-cell-wall wound signature at maximum-purity at the carved-mark register; "Esmeral—Damnation! always that thought!" is the slot-1 obsession-as-curse; the plunge from Notre-Dame at Quasimodo's hand delivers the slot-3 terminal-extension. Romantic-era founding specimen at the received branch. (Notre-Dame de Paris ✓)
The branches discriminate by origin but converge in the slot-2 mechanism (cures explicitly refused at on-page cost) and slot-3 register (wound preserved as identity-ground, bearer-realizable).
Multi-branch unifying specimen. Lord Foul's Bane (Donaldson, 1977): Covenant runs all three branches simultaneously in one bearer — received structural wound (leprosy and VSE-as-daily-ritual), received emotional wound (Joan's abandonment + the amputated fingers), self-administered moral wound (the rape of Lena). The three converge in the bearer-realizable identity-statement "the Unbeliever." Demonstrates the branches hold under one engine without discrimination at the bearer-level; the open question "Self-inflicted vs received vs witnessed wounds — do these hold under one engine, or discriminate?" closes as one engine with three branches. The novel also doubles as the catalog's anti-founder-novel specimen — the assault Covenant commits IS the foundational moral wound the novel preserves, distinct from Rand's Atlas Shrugged / The Fountainhead where similar assaults are rendered as redemption-vectors for the assaulted party. Modern-fantasy. (Lord Foul's Bane ✓)
Multi-engine specimens where wound co-runs.
- Beloved (Morrison) — wound at the slave-mother-killed-her-own-child register paired with belonging (community-of-women-after-the-fall) + virtue-of-defeat (the rightness of the act preserved as identity-ground). Sethe's wish-valence guard: would she accept the cure that the killing had not happened while Beloved remained free? Yes — categorically. The cure she refuses is Paul D's cure: forget, move forward, accept that the killing was wrong. The wound at the historical-trauma register.
- Kindred (Butler) — wound at the coerced-witness-to-ancestral-violation register. Dana's body absorbs the cost across the time-travel substrate's enforcement; arm-loss is the slot-3 mechanism. Pairs with legacy at also-runs (the fictional-coerced-preservation sub-mode of #6).
- What Belongs to You (Greenwell) — wound at the gay-childhood-with-rejecting-father register. Slot-1 in the Part II flashback to the father; slot-2 paid in the lifelong-cost expatriate life; slot-3 at the closing's partial repair with R. Pairs with recognition at two also-runs sub-registers (refused-by-witness; asymmetric-witness).
Cure-without-cost discrimination guard. The wound engine's diagnostic test: would the bearer accept a cure that erased the wound at no cost? Across all slot-proven specimens the guard returns NO — categorically — because the wound is the identity-ground the bearer's life stands on. This guard discriminates wound from trauma-recovery narratives (where the bearer WOULD accept the cure-without-cost; the trauma is something the bearer wants past) and from redemption-arc narratives (where the bearer seeks restoration to a pre-wound state). The guard is the wound engine's load-bearing diagnostic.
Backings missing / open holes:
- Religious-conversion wound — the wound as the structural condition that drives religious conversion (Augustine's Confessions at the canonical register, John Newton's Amazing Grace memoir at the popular-conversion register). The wish-valence guard's answer here is ambiguous: would the converted-bearer accept the cure-without-cost? Probably yes — the conversion narrative wants the wound healed in the new relation to God, not preserved as identity-ground. Likely runs redemption rather than wound; worth a slot-test.
- Survivor-witness wound at the documentary register — first-person testimonial wound at the survivor's own register (Primo Levi's If This Is a Man, Wiesel's Night). The wound is structurally tied to witness-preservation rather than identity-preservation; may run a sibling register or pull toward virtue-of-defeat + bearing-witness bundle. Worth a slot-test.
- Multi-generational inherited wound — wound inherited across generations rather than borne by a single bearer (Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon at the inherited-name-erasure register; the Sing Unburied Sing register at the ghost-of-the-past variant). Already partially-covered at the legacy/transcendence #6 register; may also have a wound-engine reading at the inheritance-of-wound register. Worth a discrimination slot-test.
- Wound at the multi-bearer collective-historical register — 2666's Santa Teresa femicides as wounds borne by the murdered women, the families, the community. The author-rendered foreclosure reading at virtue-of-defeat may co-run with a wound-spine reading at the multi-bearer-historical-trauma register. Worth a slot-test.
Candidate-engine signals.
- Wound-as-religious-conversion-substrate — see above; may need to be discriminated from redemption.
- Wound-as-bearing-witness-cost — the witness-once-removed bears wound-as-cost of the witnessing role itself. Maus (Spiegelman), the second-generation testimonial register. May be a sub-mode of wound at the witnessed-branch / collective-register or a sibling bundle. Held in Bundle-shape catalog second-generation-testimonial-bundle.
The wound engine has the catalog's most-tested single-engine confirmation (nine slot-proven specimens across multiple registers, with the three-branch unifying specimen closing the within-engine discrimination question). The engine's load-bearing diagnostic — cure-without-cost guard returning NO — is the catalog's cleanest single discrimination test.
Slot-3 register-class re-walk queue
A catalog re-walk (2026-06-07, after Peters) cross-tests existing dossier slot-3 readings against the three slot-3 register-classes. Re-walks completed and findings:
- 2666 (Bolaño) — confirmed author-rendered foreclosure at the virtue-of-defeat engine. The dossier's "rendering without resolving" and "act of cataloguing-the-unrendered itself as the engine's content" is the author-rendered sub-class signature. The bearers (the critics, Amalfitano, Fate) fail without naming the failure-as-engine; the work's catalogue-discipline stakes the withholding. Note: 2666 is
~ reviewed, not slot-proven; the register-class assignment is a dossier-language reading, not primary-text confirmed. Promotes from "candidate" to "register-class signal" pending primary-text slot-test. - Klara and the Sun (Ishiguro) — confirmed author-rendered foreclosure at the liberation/autonomy engine (the lifted-vs-unlifted register; the dossier already names the slot-3 as "withheld at the level the engine conventionally requires"). Klara's caretaking slot-3 (the slow fade in the Yard) is NOT foreclosure — it is completion-then-graceful-decline, a candidate distinct register-class (the wish-shape completes; the slot-3 fills as the post-completion graceful end). Klara's virtue-of-defeat slot-3 (the substantive religion honored without confirmation) is NOT foreclosure either — it is unverifiability-honored, another candidate distinct register-class. Both flagged for further specimens before naming formally.
- Stoner (Williams) — queued. No dossier yet; the bundle catalog references it as "canonical reckoning-without-redemption ... a life they cannot redeem; the meaning emerges from honest reckoning." Likely runs author-rendered foreclosure at virtue-of-defeat or wound, but confirmation requires a fresh slot-test against primary text. Highest-leverage next re-walk candidate.
- Norwegian Wood (Murakami) — queued. Reckoning-without-redemption bundle specimen at the realist-melancholic register. Same candidate-class as Stoner; re-read against the existing dossier first.
- A Little Life (Yanagihara) — queued. Wound at lifelong-cost ending in the bearer's suicide. The suicide-as-acknowledgment hypothesis would be bearer-acknowledged foreclosure at wound; the structural rendering as author-staked withholding would be author-rendered. Worth careful re-read.
- Stone Butch Blues (Feinberg) — queued. The "still-unmailed letter ... open in the world, addressed to whoever the world eventually places in the witness-position" signals a possible distinct shape — address-held-open-for-future-witness — distinct from Vuong's addressed-to-the-impossible (specific alive-but-illiterate witness), from Peters's autonomy-suspended (specific present bearer's autonomy), and from both foreclosure sub-classes (the wish-shape is held open rather than acknowledged-as-foreclosed). May surface as a fifth register-class or collapse into a sub-variation of addressed-to-the-impossible at the future-witness register. Worth careful re-read.
Structural relation to the reckoning-without-redemption bundle. The existing bundle-shape catalog names a multi-engine bundle (virtue-of-defeat + caretaking + legacy) characteristic of literary-fiction reckoning specimens. The three new slot-3 register-classes operate at a different level — within-engine slot-3 register-shapes that can appear across multiple engines independently. The bundle and the register-class are orthogonal: a reckoning-without-redemption bundle specimen can have a honest-foreclosure slot-3 (likely Stoner, 2666) or it can have a partial-redemption slot-3 (Lila's "partial-redemption fourth leg" per bundle-shape-catalog.md). The honest-foreclosure register-class is more precise than the bundle: it names what the slot-3 is doing, not which engines are firing in combination.
Engines without register-class confirmation yet. Foreclosure-at-slot-3 is confirmed at legacy, recognition, virtue-of-defeat, liberation/autonomy (5 specimens / 4 engines). Coerced-preservation is confirmed at legacy only (one specimen). Autonomy-suspended is confirmed at recognition and belonging (within one specimen). Engines without any register-class signal: apotheosis, mastery, vindication, repricing, comeuppance, caretaking, belonging-at-other-registers, order/legibility, the-double-life, impunity, wound. The wound engine is interesting here — the cure-without-cost guard is the engine's load-bearing diagnostic (see the wound section above), and the slot-3 register where the wound is preserved-as-identity-ground is a different register-shape from foreclosure-at-slot-3 (the wound's slot-3 is the bearer-realizable identity-statement, not the engine's withholding). A wound specimen with the slot-3 fully refused-and-foreclosed (rather than preserved-as-ground) would surface a fourth wound-register-class signal worth checking against A Little Life's suicide ending.
Coverage
Each confirmed engine carries: slot-proven entries listed, present backings extracted with grounded quotes from the entries, holes named with the specific works/traditions that would fill them, and candidate-engine signals where the slot-testing or cross-engine analogy suggests pressure on the taxonomy. The hole catalog is actionable as a directed-acquisition queue. The wound section consolidates the engine's three branches by wound-origin (self-administered / witnessed / received) plus the multi-branch unifying specimen and the cure-without-cost diagnostic guard.
Next pass
The skeleton sections (redemption through being-desired) need verbatim extraction from their entries to ground their backings the way the first six are grounded. That's straightforward follow-on work (~2-3 entries per engine × 13 engines).
The hole catalog is already actionable: the syllabus PDFs (Sweetgrass, Sand Talk, Le Guin, Jemisin) and lexicon's PD wisdom-tradition texts (Gita, Tao, Dhammapada, Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus) are precisely the right material to fill many of the named holes. The acquisition queue writes itself from this document.
The most-pressing candidate-engine signal is vocation-redirection / structural hospitableness — surfaced across Chambers's Monk & Robot, Le Guin's AC, and (more weakly) Jemisin's Emergency Skin, and not fitting cleanly under liberation/autonomy or belonging. Worth a candidate-engine slot-test next.
