The reading

The bead. To have no place anywhere, and be taken in by a tribe as kin — content to let the world of men stay wrong about you.

Engines

The bundle. Scoped to the opening story it is clean belonging. Across the wider book Mowgli's arc also-runs mastery (he learns the Law and masters the jungle) and a later exclusion (the grown man-cub driven out, caught between man and wolf) — other stories, not this card.

Dual-use read. Belonging's counterfeit is the cult / the cell: we few who truly see, against the world that rejected you. The Pack answers a yearned-for place (the guard); the cult assigns a place to the placeless — belonging without the yearning, the tribe that finds you rather than the one you longed for. Value-flow call is subjective: the Pack enables real kinship; the cell manufactures it for the excluded and then owns them.

Consumption. Light — the found-family / fandom-as-tribe badge.

Verdict. Belonging's clean specimen — a near-diagrammatic adoption ceremony — and the case that fixes the engine's mark: the prize is a tribe's kinship, not the world's recognition (no market misprices Mowgli; a tribe decides whether he is kin).

Evidence. Slot-proven — The Jungle Book ("Mowgli's Brothers") (all slots verbatim against Gutenberg #236, a literal Council-Rock adoption).

The evidence

Belonging holds the protagonist back by having no place, and releases them by recognition-as-kin: a named tribe takes them in, and they are content to let the world stay wrong. This is the engine's first slot-test against a page — belonging was the one confirmed engine never checked. "Mowgli's Brothers," the opening story, is near-diagrammatic for the slots.

Slot 1 — Exclusion (cast out / with no place)

Mowgli enters the jungle as a placeless human infant — no tribe, no claim on anyone:

"Directly in front of him, holding on by a low branch, stood a naked brown baby who could just walk" (ll. 194–195)

and his non-belonging is stated aloud, by the predator who claims him and in the very name the wolves use for themselves — the question of whether a man's cub has any place among them:

"The cub is mine. Give him to me. What have the Free People to do with a man's cub?" (Shere Khan, ll. 318–319)

The placeless outsider, claimed by a hunter, with the tribe itself asking what it has to do with him: the exclusion is on the record.

Slot 2 — Group (a specific named tribe)

The tribe is named twice over — by its formal name and by its name for itself:

"Mowgli was entered into the Seeonee Wolf Pack" (l. 405)
"What have the Free People to do with the orders of any save the Free People?" (Akela, ll. 319–321)

The Seeonee Wolf Pack, who call themselves the Free People: a specific, named tribe, not a diffuse "society."

Slot 3 — Acceptance (taken in by that group)

The acceptance is a literal scene — the Council Rock, where by the Law a cub must be spoken for. Baloo speaks:

"Let him run with the Pack, and be entered with the others. I myself will teach him." (ll. 342–343)

the Pack assents and Bagheera pays the price:

"Let him run with the Pack. Where is the bull, Bagheera? Let him be accepted." (ll. 377–378)

and the taking-in is sealed:

"And that is how Mowgli was entered into the Seeonee Wolf Pack for the price of a bull and on Baloo's good word." (ll. 405–406)

The recognition is specifically as kin — Mother Wolf names him, the act that makes him family:

"O thou Mowgli--for Mowgli the Frog I will call thee" (l. 277)

Result

All three slots fill cleanly with verified quotes, against a literal adoption ceremony. Tagged belonging, and it is the engine's first validation against a page — which completes the confirmed-three: repricing (P&P), unleashing (Jekyll/Hyde), belonging (The Jungle Book) now each have a clean specimen.

Belonging's distinguishing mark holds here: the prize is a tribe's acceptance, not the world's recognition. Mowgli wants the Pack, not the human village; the recognition is kinship ("for Mowgli the Frog I will call thee," "on Baloo's good word"), and he is content to let the world of men stay wrong about him. That is what separates belonging from repricing — there is no market mispricing his worth, only a tribe deciding whether he is kin.

Composition note: across the larger book Mowgli's arc also runs mastery (he learns the Law and masters the jungle) and a later exclusion when the grown man-cub is driven out — caught between man and wolf. Those are other stories; "Mowgli's Brothers," scoped to the adoption, is clean belonging. Not yet falsification-tested: belonging has a true positive now but no false-positive hunt has been run against its slots, so — as with the other engines before Jekyll — "slots fill" is not yet "the engine is sound." Slot 1 ("cast out or with no place") is the likeliest soft spot to probe next, the way unleashing's restraint-slot was.
