Zetetic Astronomy: Earth Not a Globe!

The reading

The bead. Samuel Rowbotham's 1865 anonymous foundational text of the modern flat-earth movement, published under the pen-name "Parallax" and structured as an "experimental inquiry" against the orthodox spherical-cosmology of mainstream Victorian astronomy. The catalog's clearest single-engine canon-founding specimen of the physical-cosmology-empirically-defended sub-register of order/legibility — the sub-register subsequently inherited by Voliva's cult-mode flat-earth (1914-1942, see The Christian Catholic Apostolic Church / Zion, Illinois under Voliva), by Aum's scientific-pose mode at distinct register (Destroying the World to Save It (Aum Shinrikyō)), and by modern distributed protected-world-mode flat-earth communities. Rowbotham predates all the cluster-specimens that adopt his sub-register by ~50-160 years; the sub-register is older than any cluster that runs it.

Engines — Rowbotham runs ONE engine substantively. Honest single-engine reading; not a cluster-cluster specimen.

NOT present: apotheosis, mastery, impunity. No closed community; no founder-followers structure (Rowbotham operates as itinerant lecturer publishing under a pen-name); no in-group lifestyle-laws; no ascent-ladder; no exemption-from-norms claim. The work is single-engine — the order/legibility sub-register operating without the other cluster-legs.

The bundle. Single-engine specimen. Not a cluster specimen. The cluster forms only when this single-engine canon-founding text gets combined with apotheosis + mastery + impunity in a closed-community setting (Voliva), or when it gets combined with apotheosis + impunity-from-mainstream-norms in a distributed-no-leader setting (modern flat-earth via QAnon-shaped protected-world cluster). Rowbotham himself runs only the order/legibility engine.

Dual-use read. Single-engine counterfeit at the order/legibility register, with the physical-cosmology-empirically-defended sub-register's signature slot-2 deficit: the empirical-defense-apparatus operates as authority-display rather than as actual epistemological accountability. The Bedford Level experiment, taken at face value, ignores atmospheric refraction (well-documented by Victorian astronomy at the time of Rowbotham's writing; refraction in low layers near water surfaces routinely permits direct observation of objects beyond the geometric horizon, which is in fact what enabled the boat-with-flag to be visible throughout the 6 miles). Wallace's later 1870 re-run of the Bedford Level experiment, with marker poles at known heights placed at the canal's midpoint, recovered the curvature signature directly. Rowbotham's slot-2 deficit is the empirical apparatus that looks-like-evidence but cannot survive controlled re-run — the canon-founding form of the sub-register's signature deficit.

Consumption. Foundational text of the modern flat-earth movement; consumed continuously from 1865 onward via subsequent printings, William Carpenter's American republications (Baltimore 1885), Lady Blount's Earth not a Globe Review (UK periodical), Thomas Winship's Zetetic Cosmogony, and via Rowbotham's own touring lecture circuit. Voliva re-published Carpenter's One Hundred Proofs that the Earth is not a Globe (Rowbotham's American follower) at Zion (see The Christian Catholic Apostolic Church / Zion, Illinois under Voliva). Now PD-fetched from Project Gutenberg as PG #69892 (released January 2023).

Verdict. The catalog's clearest single-engine canon-founding specimen of the physical-cosmology-empirically-defended order/legibility sub-register. Methodologically significant for the catalog as: (a) the canon-founding text predating all cluster-specimens that adopt the sub-register by 50-160 years, confirming the sub-register's cluster-mode-portability from canon-founding; (b) the cleanest demonstration that order/legibility's physical-cosmology-empirically-defended sub-register can run in single-engine form without becoming a cluster-specimen (Rowbotham operates as an itinerant lecturer without forming a closed community); (c) the canon's slot-2 deficit (Bedford Level experiment's vulnerability to atmospheric refraction, recoverable on controlled re-run) is present from canon-founding, not introduced by later cluster-adopters.

Evidence. ~ reviewed — Rowbotham, Samuel Birley (writing as "Parallax"). Zetetic Astronomy: Earth Not a Globe! An Experimental Inquiry into the True Figure of the Earth. Simpkin, Marshall, and Co., London, 1865. Public domain; PG #69892 (released January 2023). Single primary text read at the verbatim layer; the zetetic-method articulation (l. 184), the Bedford Level experiment (l. 246-254), the Irish Sea cross-check (l. 262) all directly verified. Schadewald's Plane Truth Chapter 8 (per The Christian Catholic Apostolic Church / Zion, Illinois under Voliva) places Rowbotham at the head of the flat-earth canon-lineage Voliva drew on: Rowbotham → Carpenter → Gleason → Blount → Winship → contemporary 20th-century flat-earthers. Cross-reference: The Christian Catholic Apostolic Church / Zion, Illinois under Voliva (the cult-mode adoption of Rowbotham's sub-register, with Voliva re-publishing Carpenter at Zion); cluster-catalog (cult the cult cluster; the physical-cosmology-empirically-defended order/legibility sub-register is now slot-proven via two cluster-mode specimens — Voliva flat-earth and Aum scientific-pose — and one single-engine canon-founding specimen — Rowbotham); (protected-world cluster — Rowbotham's distributed-itinerant-lecturer mode predates the modern flat-earth communities' distributed protected-world cluster-mode). Open: a ~ reviewed card for William Carpenter's One Hundred Proofs that the Earth is not a Globe (1885, Baltimore) would extend the canon-lineage to its first American expansion (primary-text-pending — likely PD-fetchable from archive.org).
