wound

performative-victimhood / trauma-grifting

Wound's counterfeit is performative-victimhood / trauma-grifting: your hurt is your standing; the deeper the wound, the realer and the more owed you are; display it and the debt falls due. It grants slot-3 (the wounded identity — the deeper, truer self the wound is supposed to certify) while faking slot-2 (the constitutive wound actually borne and preserved through every offered cure at real cost): the badge of the wounded handed to those who perform a hurt rather than carry one.

The wish (from the validated fiction). Wound's mechanism is gratify-by-refusing-to-give: cures are offered, each at on-page cost, the bearer refuses each — the refusal IS the gratification, the wound preserved as the ground the identity stands on. The wish-valence guard returns NO to the cure-without-cost: the Underground Man would not be healed, because the wound is the only basis on which he outranks the cured —

"there is more life in me than in you" (Notes from the Underground)

In A Little Life the cure-refusal is articulated in the bearer's own voice across forty years and every intervention offered:

"I need it. It makes things right" (A Little Life)

The benign face is real and not a fault: some wounds are constitutive, and a life can be honestly built on carrying one. It enables.

The hinge. The same gesture — this hurt is who I am, and I will not be talked out of it — reads two ways. Carried, with the cure genuinely offered and genuinely refused at cost (Jude turning down Andy, Harold, Willem; Holden refusing the wise-elder cure), it is the wound engine: the wound real and load-bearing. Performed, with no cure ever actually on the table because being-healed was never the danger — only being-doubted — it is the counterfeit: the wound displayed for the standing it confers, not borne for the identity it grounds. The cure-without-cost guard is exactly what separates them: the genuine bearer says no to the real cure; the grifter has no real cure to refuse.

The counterfeit in the wild. The grift keeps wound's slot-3 — the moral weight, the unimpeachable depth, the special hearing the hurt commands — and strips the slot-2 that earns it: the wound is narrated as currency, escalated for audience, and defended not against a cure (none is wanted) but against any doubt that would devalue it. The tells are the inversions of the engine's own guard: the hurt grows with the size of the audience rather than staying constant; healing is treated as betrayal of the identity rather than refused at cost; the wound is spent — converted to deference, exemption, or a claim on others — rather than carried. This is the competitive-victimhood economy and the trauma-as-brand pipeline, where suffering is the entry ticket and the deepest-wounded wins the room. (A canonical public-domain recruitment ancestor is queued — the survivor-witness and conversion-testimony literatures flagged as open holes in the wound backings inventory are the likeliest hunt; the contemporary register carries the face for now, as recognition's does.)

Distinct from virtue of defeat, and from repricing. Three resentment-adjacent faces sit close. Virtue of defeat sanctifies a defeat (the renounced victory) into a halo; repricing charges a dismissal as a debt to be collected; wound certifies a hurt as standing. They sort by what is held up: the renounced win, the cheated worth, the borne injury. Wound's counterfeit is the only one whose payoff is the injury itself as credential — not "I was right and refused to win," not "I am worth more than they paid," but "I was hurt, therefore I am owed and unanswerable."

The guard / value-flow. Benign when the wound is real, constitutive, and carried — the cure honestly offered and honestly refused at cost (the catalog's load-bearing diagnostic: the bearer says NO to the cure-without-cost). Dark — recruitment — when the display of woundedness is the extraction vector: the hurt performed and escalated for the standing it buys, healing recast as betrayal, doubt as re-injury. The genuine engine carries the wound at the cost of every refused cure; the counterfeit spends the wounded identity with nothing borne behind it — slot-3 minus slot-2.
