The reading

The bead. An American teacher in Sofia, Bulgaria meets a young Bulgarian sex worker named Mitko at the National Palace of Culture; the relationship spans years, an inheritance of childhood damage, a syphilis exposure they share, and a final return visit in which the narrator — now with a new partner R. — receives Mitko at the door, feeds him, gives him money for medicine, and refuses to let him in again. The book's middle section steps backward into the narrator's American childhood and a father whose discovery of the narrator's queerness severed the bond that had once made the boy feel he was "in his father's confidence, in the warm thick of it" (Part II).

Engines

The bundle. A wound-spine specimen with two recognition sub-register cross-currents — both pressuring the recognition engine's pole-space toward acknowledging variants the original four-pole partition didn't name. The refused-by-witness variant (Greenwell's father) is structurally distinct from Baldwin's refused pole (David); they share the engine's signature but the agency of refusal differs (bearer vs witness). The asymmetric-witness variant (Greenwell's Mitko relation) is structurally distinct from Nelson's mutual-loose-witness; both are contemporaneous (vs Vuong's address-to-impossible) but the symmetry differs (mutual-loose vs asymmetric).

The Nelson mutual-loose-witness sub-mode is NOT confirmed by Greenwell. The Mitko relation runs asymmetric-witness rather than mutual-loose — the structural inequality is the spine of the recognition mechanism, not (as in Nelson) the parity-across-change. The sub-mode stays provisional on Nelson alone; a different cross-test is needed (Maupin queued next).

What Greenwell tells us instead: recognition's pole-space admits a second axis besides the bearer's stance (refused/sought/affirmed/addressed-to-impossible). The witness-agency axis (who refuses; who can bear witness) is at least as load-bearing. This pressure recommends the synthesis pass (queued next).

Dual-use read. Clean enabling at structural commitment. Greenwell's structural commitment is the refusal to soften the wound's preservation as the condition of the narrator's life. The Mitko relation is rendered without aestheticizing the asymmetry; the father memory is rendered without the easy redemption-arc that would substitute for the wound's continuing weight. The work refuses the wound counterfeit (performative-victimhood / wound-as-brand) by holding the wound quietly — the narrator does not display the wound for credential or platform; he carries it through the prose of the book. Value-flow: clean enabling at source.

Consumption. Greenwell's debut novel; won the British Book Awards Debut of the Year (2017); shortlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Award; on multiple "best of 2016" lists. Consumption-layer counterfeit risk: What Belongs to You-as prestige literary gay fiction identity purchase pattern. The work refuses this at the structural commitment by holding the asymmetry of the Mitko relation in full view — the reader cannot take the relation as romance without simultaneously taking it as a transaction with money and a passport asymmetry the narrator names.

Verdict. Wound slot-proven at the gay-childhood-with-rejecting-father register; recognition at two secondary sub-registers that pressure the engine's pole-space toward a second axis (witness-agency, witness-symmetry) beyond the bearer's-stance axis the four-pole partition already names. The evidence

A wound-spine specimen with the spine register established in Part II's flashback to the father and the slot-3 cost paid in the narrator's continuing expatriate-and-aesthetic life. The two recognition sub-register cross-currents are flagged for the engine-model synthesis pass.

Slot 1 — the gay child in his father's confidence (the field-and-stars memory)

The slot-1 condition for wound at the gay-childhood-with-rejecting-father register is the bearer remembers a time before the wound was made when the witness held him close. The condition is established in the Part II flashback to the night the boy lay with his father in the field:

"It was rare for him to set aside his work as he did that night, lying with me in the field, when I was still young enough to be a part of him, to touch and be touched by him. … I was in my father's confidence, I felt, in the warm thick of it." (Part II)

The slot-1 invariant — the wound is dated to the moment after which the touch became impossible — is established by the bearer's diagnostic clarity about when the confidence was held and when it withdrew. The narrator's gay self had not yet been named; the father's withdrawal followed the naming. The wound is the absence-of-the-touch after a past in which the touch was given.

Slot 2 — the lifelong cost (the choice of Sofia, the choice of the underground, the inheritance)

The slot-2 cost is paid across the novel's three parts as the structure of the narrator's life. He chose Sofia, a city whose language he does not speak; he chose teaching, an occupation that lets him spend afternoons in the underground bathrooms where he met Mitko; he chose expatriate isolation as the condition that lets the wound be carried. Each of these is a slot-2 mechanism — the bearer chooses conditions that preserve the wound as the condition of his life.

The slot-2 cost lands at the office-page scene that opens Part II — the woman walks into the classroom with the page that announces the father's terminal illness:

"I was in the middle of a sentence when there was a knock at the door and a woman entered my classroom without a word. … there was something in her manner that checked my greeting before I spoke it, perhaps her silence or the oddly formal way she carried the single, unfolded page in her hand." (Part II)

The slot-2 mechanism — the wound's continuing weight surfaces at the moment the witness is about to become structurally permanently unavailable — is dramatized as the interruption of the narrator's teaching life by the page that will deliver the recognition's foreclosure.

Slot 3 — the closing's chosen partial repair (R., the cheek-kiss, the worry-about-syphilis)

The slot-3 invariant for wound at this register is the bearer accepts a partial repair without abandoning the wound's continuing weight. The slot-3 fills at the Part III closing — Mitko returns ill and asking for money; the narrator gives him money for medicine, feeds him, and refuses to let him stay; Mitko leaves with a cheek-kiss "friendly, unromantic" that does not "dismiss the intimacy" but sets it "in a new key"; the narrator lies awake worrying about exposure he might bring to R., his new partner:

"I hardly slept that night. Almost as soon as Mitko left I started to worry, and I lay in bed wondering what I would tell R. if the tests came back positive, as now I was sure they would. I had written him an e-mail, saying I was too busy to talk on Skype, as we usually did every night before going to sleep. I didn't tell him about Mitko's visit. It wasn't my intention to lie, and R. already knew about Mitko, like everything else in my past he was part of the story that had led us to each other; it's a way of being in love, I think, to see the past like that." (Part III)

"A way of being in love, I think, to see the past like that" is the slot-3 signature. The narrator has accepted R. as the partial repair — the new relation is real, the love is real, the partner has been told about the past — but the wound continues to weigh as the cost of the past that R. now knows about. The slot-3 does not abandon the wound; it accepts a partial repair that includes the wound as its condition.

Discrimination

Wound vs Bechdel's posthumous-reconstruction. Bechdel reconstructs her dead father through his textual residues. Greenwell's father is still alive at the start of Part II and the narrator goes to him; the wound is the lifelong cost rather than the posthumous-reconstruction. Greenwell's witness is reachable-but-rejecting; Bechdel's witness is dead. Distinct.

Recognition refused (Greenwell's father) vs Baldwin's David. Baldwin's bearer flees the witness who could see him; Greenwell's father refuses to be the witness. The agency of refusal is inverted: bearer-flees vs witness-refuses-to-witness. Two distinct mechanisms under a common pole-category. The recognition engine's pole-space needs a second axis (witness-agency) to distinguish them.

Recognition asymmetric (Greenwell's Mitko) vs Nelson's mutual-loose. Both contemporaneous, both involve two live bearers, both involve change. But the symmetry differs: Nelson's pair pays the slot-2 cost in mutual bearing across parallel transformation; Greenwell's pair is structurally unequal (American/Bulgarian, teacher/sex worker, EU/non-EU) and the witness cannot land. The sub-mode question stays open.

Result

Wound slot-proven at the gay-childhood-with-rejecting-father register. The wound's spine is established in Part II's father-flashback and held continuously across the novel as the structural condition of the narrator's expatriate life.

Recognition at two secondary sub-registers — both pressure the engine's pole-space toward a second axis. The synthesis pass queued for after Maupin should consider whether witness-agency and witness-symmetry are load-bearing alongside the bearer's-stance axis the four-pole partition names.

Nelson's mutual-loose-witness sub-mode of the affirmed pole stays provisional on Nelson alone. Greenwell does not confirm it; the Mitko relation is asymmetric rather than mutual-loose. Cross-test moves to Maupin Tales of the City.
