A Little Princess

slot-proven Frances Hodgson Burnett · 1905 · novel
Project Gutenberg

The reading

The bead. Sara Crewe wakes in her cold, bare attic to find the same rusty grate become a glowing fire, the same hard bed become a satin quilt, with "a luxurious wadded robe of crimson silk" laid out and "rich, hot, savory soup… and sandwiches and toast and muffins enough for both of them" — the abundance is the wish, real, catalogued, conferred by a real benefactor with real means.

Engines

The bundle. Single-engine specimen — the spine version of the wish that the ACOTAR fill ran only as a romance rider. Here the described luxury is terminal, the payoff itself, with no lover at the beat and no social re-valuation until later in the plot. Maximally-different second specimen of abundance, paired with Ali Baba (the oral folk-tale treasure-cave register) — both run the scarcity-into-plenty wish across a maximal swap of register (Victorian domestic interior vs Persian folk tale).

Dual-use read. Abundance's counterfeit is Wallace Wattles' The Science of Getting Rich — riches by thought alone, the means denied. Burnett almost reaches for the counterfeit's logic — Sara: "If I can only keep on thinking it… I don't care!" as if thinking could make plenty real — and the text refuses it: the Magic is a real benefactor with real means, not mind-power. Value-flow call (subjective, per the README): this is exactly the line the counterfeit erases. Burnett puts the temptation on the page and routes around it; the engine fills clean because the plenty is delivered (real means, real giver) and priced against remembered scarcity. The fusion line — "drew her into the warm, glowing midst of things which made her brain reel and her hungry senses faint" — names the scarcity-against-plenty contrast in a single breath. Honest caveat: the novel as a whole runs a restoration/repricing arc (Sara is eventually restored to her fortune and publicly recognized), so abundance is the spine of the transformation beat, not the whole plot — the same discipline as Ali Baba's "spine of the wish, not the whole tale."

Verdict. Abundance's maximally-different second specimen — Victorian domestic-interior register, paired with Ali Baba's oral folk-tale register to confirm the engine generalizes across the maximal swap. The almost temptation of the counterfeit then refused is what marks the engine running cleanly here.

Evidence. ✓ slot-proven — full record at A Little Princess. Slot-test cleared via verbatim quotes from Gutenberg #146; discriminations from being-desired (anonymous benefactor, no high-value other), repricing (private transformation, no social re-valuation), and redemption (Sara is wronged, not guilty) held cleanly.

The evidence

The maximally-different second specimen of abundance: the same scarcity-into-plenty wish as Ali Baba (#20916), but in a Victorian domestic-interior register rather than an oral folk-tale treasure-cave. Sara Crewe, fallen from wealth into a cold, bare attic and real hunger, wakes to find the garret transformed overnight into a savored catalogue of warmth and plenty. This is the spine version of the wish the ACOTAR fill ran only as a romance rider — here the described luxury is terminal, the payoff itself, with no lover and no social re-valuation at the beat.

Slot 1 — Scarcity (the want the plenty is priced against)

The attic is bare and cold; Sara's want is acute and named:

"There was a rusty grate, an old iron bedstead, and a hard bed covered with a faded coverlet." (ll. 2819–2820)
"I'm cold; I'm wet; I'm starving to death." (ll. 3903–3904)

The wish-valence guard is built into the specimen: the same rusty grate becomes the glowing fire, the same hard faded bed the satin quilt. The plenty is felt precisely against this remembered want.

Slot 2 — The plenty really acquired (real, conferred by real means)

The scene insists the plenty is real, not a dream or a wish — and it is backed by a real giver (the later-revealed benefactor Mr. Carrisford, whose real fortune funds the gift):

"To the little girl in the attic. From a friend." (l. 6217)
"They are as real as we are. The Magic has come and done it, Becky, while we were asleep" (ll. 6245–6246)

This is the slot the counterfeit skips: the abundance has actual means behind it; it is delivered, not merely promised.

Slot 3 — Immersion in savored, catalogued plenty

The payoff is the long itemized catalogue of restored comfort — abundance's signature savored list:

"In the grate there was a glowing, blazing fire; on the hob was a little brass kettle hissing and boiling; spread upon the floor was a thick, warm crimson rug; before the fire a folding-chair, unfolded, and with cushions on it" (ll. 6168–6170)
"a luxurious wadded robe of crimson silk" (l. 6233)
"rich, hot, savory soup, which was a meal in itself, and sandwiches and toast and muffins enough for both of them" (ll. 6280–6281)

The catalogue is the wish. The fusion line names the scarcity-against-plenty contrast in a single breath — the plenty drawing in her "hungry senses":

"drew her into the warm, glowing midst of things which made her brain reel and her hungry senses faint" (ll. 6241–6243)

Guard / distinctness — abundance, not being-desired, not repricing, not redemption

The wish-valence guard: the plenty is priced against remembered scarcity and really conferred (real means behind it), not performed.

Honest caveat: A Little Princess as a whole runs a restoration/repricing arc (Sara is eventually restored to her fortune and publicly recognized), so abundance is the spine of the transformation beat, not the whole plot — the same discipline as Ali Baba's "spine of the wish, not the whole tale." The beat itself is a near-pure abundance specimen.

A note on the genuine/counterfeit edge this specimen sits on: Sara half-reaches for the counterfeit's logic — "If I can only keep on thinking it... I don't care!" — as if thinking could make plenty real. But the text refuses it: the Magic is a real benefactor with real means, not mind-power. That is exactly the line the counterfeit (Wattles' The Science of Getting Rich) erases — riches by thought alone, the means denied.

Result

All three slots fill; the savored plenty is terminal, priced against scarcity, really conferred. Tagged abundance — the scarcity-into-plenty shape, in a register maximally different from the folk-tale treasure-cave primary (Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" (The Arabian Nights: Their Best-known Tales)).
