The reading
The bead. Two trans bearers across a 3,000-mile road: Maria Griffiths, four years post-transition, working at a Manhattan bookstore, dissociated through her relationship with Steph, the long-internalized "bravado" that got her through transition now blocking her further evolution; and James Hanson, twenty, stoned, hotboxing his Star City Wal-Mart bathroom, ignorant of what his autogynephilia-self-diagnosis is concealing. Maria steals Steph's car after the relationship ruptures, drives west, spots James in his Wal-Mart, projects her own past onto him, and drives him to Reno trying to convince him he's trans. He refuses, drifts away in the casino, calls his girlfriend, and goes home. The engine is recognition at the sought pole at the trans-women register, slot-3 resolved as the engine's own honest foreclosure: the bearer's wish-shape — be recognized as the elder witness who can give recognition to a junior bearer and thereby recognize myself — is structurally non-functional, and the book stakes itself on rendering that non-functionality clean.
Engines
- recognition · content · spine · ✓ — at the sought pole resolved as honest foreclosure sub-mode at the trans-women register.
- Slot 1 (doubled): the surrounding world cannot witness Maria correctly — not because she fails to pass (she does pass; old straight men hit on her at work, l. 202) but because the recognition she needs is recognition as continuing to evolve post transition, and the social grammars around her — the bookstore coworkers who knew her pre-transition, the queer community whose narratives of liberation were "written by cis people" (l. 2914), her relationship with Steph that had calcified into the "bravado" she put on to get through transition — cannot witness the post-transition bearer still being a bearer. Maria names the doubled condition at l. 2575: "watching your girlfriend become someone else, more of a grownup, but still stay herself, while meanwhile you're still working the same job you always have, at the same level of broke with the same people who knew you years ago and knew you when you transitioned. When you see the same people every day that you've seen since before you transitioned and you already went through this massive social and physical change, and you're afraid to really even consider changing or evolving in any way, because you kind of had to have all this bravado, to act like you really believed in yourself in order to transition."
- Slot 2: paid in the years of dissociation that made Maria a "manipulative, lying control freak" who fakes orgasms (l. 179) because her relationship to her body is foreclosed (l. 1335); paid in the bravado-as-armor that closed her off from Steph for two silent years (l. 1141); paid in the structural flight — stealing Steph's car, draining her bank account, scoring heroin, "I need a clean break from my life for the last four years, six years, twenty-nine years" (l. 1533). The slot-2 mechanism is the bearer pays the cost of breaking the only configuration that ever recognized her at all (her own bravado-armored post-transition self) in order to seek a configuration in which the post-transition bearer can keep being a bearer.
- Slot 3: the engine's honest foreclosure. Maria spots James in the Star City Wal-Mart and the projection-mechanism fires immediately: "that kid is trans and he doesn't even know it yet" (l. 1897). She takes him to Reno. She runs through her whole education-monologue about autogynephilia, about kinks-telling-us-things, about the violence of Bailey's framework (l. 2490-2516). The wish underneath the monologue: if I can give James the recognition I needed and never got, the bearer-who-can-give-recognition is what I become, and that is the kind of bearer who can keep evolving post-transition. The slot-3 fills not at completion but at acknowledgment of foreclosure: Maria forgets James in the casino (l. 2758: "Maria's already gone. Maybe she already forgot about him. He was a project she thought she could solve but since he's not doing whatever she wants now he's old news"); James wanders away, calls Nicole, lies about Maria, goes home, imagines getting head from Nicole in her car (l. 2785). The book ends mid-thought; neither bearer is resolved; the projection-mechanism is acknowledged not to work. Binnie's afterword names the slot-3 directly: "bossing someone else into being trans the same way that you are does not work and therefore does not make you feel less fucked up — and James's story is resolved when he decides that no, he's not going to listen to Maria, and he runs away from her" (l. 2983).
The bundle. A recognition-spine specimen that closes the sought pole at trans women register hole named open in backings recognition section — but in a load-bearing way that pressures the engine model. The slot-1 condition (perceives a self the world will not correctly witness) holds the same shape at this register, doubled by the post-transition need to be witnessed as continuing-to-evolve. The slot-2 cost holds the same shape (paid in body-dissociation and structural flight). What the register pressures is the slot-3 register-class: a sub-mode in which the engine resolves as the bearer's honest acknowledgment that her own wish-shape's mechanism is structurally non-functional.
This sub-mode is sibling to Hartman's non-fictional-foreclosure at legacy #6 (the family trail's irrecoverability across the rupture) and sibling to Bechdel's posthumous-reconstruction at recognition #6 (the witness's death foreclosing direct address). All three share a register-class invariant: the slot-3 fills as the book-itself-as-the-engine's-honest-failure. The specific foreclosure-mechanism differs by specimen — Hartman's is the historical record's discontinuity, Bechdel's is the witness's death, Binnie's is the projection-mechanism's structural non-functionality — but the slot-3 register (engine acknowledged as failed and honored in that failure) is the same shape.
This pattern across three specimens suggests the engine model wants a named register-class beneath the pole-space: honest-foreclosure slot-3. The class names a slot-3 register where the engine resolves not by completion but by the bearer's honest acknowledgment that the engine's wish-shape, at this specific specimen's substrate-conditions, cannot complete. The book stakes its structural commitment on rendering the foreclosure clean. Distinct from unresolved (the engine is still firing without resolution — wound at the lifelong-cost register, e.g. Greenwell) by the bearer's active acknowledgment of the foreclosure as the engine's resolution. Distinct from a refused pole slot-3 (the bearer refuses the witnessing configuration) by the seeking still being load-bearing in the bearer's wish-shape.
Dual-use read. Clean enabling at structural commitment. Binnie's structural commitment is the refusal of the redemption-arc the substrate demands. Most trans-narrative substrates — the daytime-talk-show "Sex Change Operation" arc Maria names contemptuously at l. 202, the "I am a woman trapped in the body of a man" arc James contrasts himself against at l. 1822 — would land the engine at a seeking-resolved-at-witness-found slot-3: Maria finds the elder, or becomes the elder for James, or comes home to a renewed Steph. Binnie's refusal of all three is the structural commitment. The afterword names it: "Nevada was always intended to be more of a 'well, that didn't work' narrative than one that tells anyone how to live" (l. 2798). Value-flow: clean enabling at source. Refuses the recognition counterfeit (the PUA / cult-recruiter "I see the real you" performance) by holding Maria's own projection-attempt as itself counterfeit — Maria becomes, mid-attempt, the figure Binnie has been refusing to be, and the book holds that fact in view. Refuses the wound counterfeit (performative-victimhood / wound-as-brand) by holding Maria's pain quietly — her tears at brunch are for self-pity, not for credential (l. 267).
Consumption. Nevada was self-published / small-press through Topside Press in 2013; it became foundational to the modern trans-literature wave (Binnie's afterword calls the framing "ground zero for modern trans literature" — l. 2802). The 2022 Picador reissue is the consumption-layer event tested here. Consumption-layer counterfeit risk: Nevada-as prestige trans literature identity purchase pattern, the kind of acquisition where the reader takes the book as evidence of their own cultural literacy. The work refuses this at the structural commitment by refusing the resolution the substrate would reward — there is no satisfying arc to be taken; the reader is left holding the same un-resolved engine the bearer leaves with. The afterword's anticipation of the "some people hate the ending" reaction (l. 2983) is the work's awareness of the consumption-layer test.
Verdict. Sought pole at trans women register hole closed in a load-bearing way: the pole's slot-1 and slot-2 conditions hold the same shape; the slot-3 fills in a previously unnamed register-class — honest-foreclosure slot-3 — that the engine model now recognizes by three-specimen pattern across three different engines (Hartman/legacy, Bechdel/recognition, Binnie/recognition). The class names a register where the bearer's active acknowledgment of the engine's wish-shape's structural non-functionality IS the engine's resolution.

The evidence
A recognition-spine specimen running at the sought pole at the trans-women register with the slot-3 resolving in the honest-foreclosure sub-mode. The bundle stakes the load-bearing finding on the structural alignment between the bearer's wish-shape, the projection-mechanism's non-functionality, and the book's refusal to grant the wish-shape a substrate that would let it complete.
Slot 1 — the doubled trans-women recognition condition
The slot-1 condition for recognition at this register is the bearer perceives a self the world will not correctly witness, AND the configuration of witnesses around her cannot accommodate her continued evolution past the moment of transition. The condition is established cumulatively across Part I, with l. 216 stating the bearer's surface-condition:
"It just sucks having to educate people. Sound familiar? Trans women have the same exact shit that everybody else in the world has who isn't white, het, male, able-bodied or otherwise privileged. It's not glamorous or mysterious. It's boring."
The deeper condition — the post-transition bearer's structural inability to be witnessed as continuing-to-evolve — surfaces at l. 2575-77 in Maria's dashboard monologue to James:
"I guess it's kind of scary, she says. I guess watching your girlfriend become someone else, more of a grownup, but still stay herself, while meanwhile you're still working the same job you always have, at the same level of broke with the same people who knew you years ago and knew you when you transitioned. ... how do you transition but then continue to evolve as a person, post-transition, when it seems like the only way you got through your transition was to assert loudly, even just to yourself, that you knew who you were and you knew what you wanted and you trusted yourself?"
This is the slot-1 invariant doubled: the world will not witness her as a woman and the configuration of relations she built through her transition will not witness her as continuing. The bravado that got her through transition has become the armor that prevents the next witnessing.
Slot 2 — the cost paid in body-dissociation, in the bravado-armor, in the flight
The slot-2 cost is paid across Part I in three accumulating registers. First, body-dissociation as the configuration that lets the wound be carried (l. 1335):
"Sex has always been super problematic for you. ... you didn't even know you were dissociating during sex until you'd been doing it for about a decade ... you had to stop paying attention to the person you were fucking so that you could fantasize about any number of situations that didn't have anything to do with having a penis and fucking somebody with it."
Second, the bravado-armor that closed off the relationship with Steph (l. 1141):
"But I hadn't been talking to Steph, like, at all. For like two years I couldn't think of anything to say to her, but I had shut myself off so badly that I didn't even notice."
Third, the structural flight — Maria's decision to break the only configuration that ever recognized her at all in order to seek a configuration in which the post-transition bearer can keep evolving (l. 1533):
"I'm going to get a bunch and bring it with me when I leave town, hole up in a hotel for a while, and obliterate myself. I don't want to die or anything, but I need a clean break from my life for the last four years, six years, twenty-nine years."
The slot-2 mechanism is the bearer pays the cost of breaking her own functional configuration to seek a configuration that does not yet exist.
Slot 3 — the engine's honest foreclosure
The slot-3 register is where this specimen does its load-bearing work for the engine model. Maria's wish-shape, by the time she reaches Star City, has condensed into a projection-mechanism: if I can give James the recognition I needed and never got, I become the bearer who can give recognition, which is the kind of bearer who can keep evolving post-transition. The projection-attempt is established at l. 1897:
"As soon as Maria Griffiths sees James Hanson in the Star City, Nevada, Wal-Mart, she's like, that kid is trans and he doesn't even know it yet."
The recognition-attempt runs through Part II's road-trip and the autogynephilia-discussion (l. 2486-2516). The slot-3 fills not at the recognition-attempt's success or refusal, but at Maria's own forgetting of James in the casino and James's drift back to Nicole (l. 2758, 2785):
"Maria's already gone. Maybe she already forgot about him. He was a project she thought she could solve but since he's not doing whatever she wants now he's old news. She's practically saying, out loud: fuck you, James H., get the fuck out."
"Nicole comes and picks him up in a couple hours. He lies and doesn't mention Maria or heroin or anything ... He wonders whether there's enough room in the back seat of Nicole's car for her to give him head."
Neither bearer leaves resolved. The book ends mid-thought. The slot-3 fills as the honest acknowledgment that the projection-mechanism does not work — the bearer's wish-shape's mechanism is structurally non-functional, and the book stakes itself on rendering that non-functionality clean. Binnie's afterword names the slot-3 directly (l. 2983):
"For me, it resolves Maria's story — bossing someone else into being trans the same way that you are does not work and therefore does not make you feel less fucked up — and James's story is resolved when he decides that no, he's not going to listen to Maria, and he runs away from her. I get that it's not satisfying in a traditional sense, but I still think it works."
The afterword's framing confirms the textual reading: the slot-3 register is the engine's honest foreclosure. The slot-3 content is the bearer's acknowledgment of the wish-shape's non-functional mechanism, held as the resolution.
Discrimination
Sought pole at trans women register AS HONEST FORECLOSURE vs Baldwin's refused pole. Baldwin's David flees the witness who could see him; Maria seeks a witness configuration and acknowledges that the seeking's mechanism doesn't complete. The bearer-stance differs (flight vs seeking-acknowledged-foreclosed); the slot-3 differs (refusal vs honest-foreclosure). Distinct.
Vs Vuong's addressed-to-the-impossible pole. Vuong's witness is structurally impossible (the mother who cannot read English); the address is perpetual, the engine kept in perpetual address rather than resolved. Maria's witness is structurally possible (James is reachable, present, in the car); the slot-3 is the bearer's acknowledgment that the mechanism of address (projection-onto-junior-bearer) is non-functional, not that the witness is impossible. Distinct pole.
Vs Lorde's affirmed-as-biomythography. Lorde constructs a chain of witnesses by inventing biomythography; the construction works as the engine's resolution. Maria attempts to construct a witnessing-elder-and-junior dyad; the construction fails. The mechanism shape (construction of the witness-configuration) is similar; the substrate's capacity to grant the construction differs. Distinct sub-mode.
Vs Bechdel's posthumous-reconstruction (recognition #6). Bechdel's witness is dead-but-textually-residual; the slot-3 fills as the book-itself reconstructing the witness across death. Binnie's witness is alive-but-refusing-the-projection; the slot-3 fills as the book-itself acknowledging the projection's non-functionality. Both run the honest-foreclosure slot-3 register-class; the foreclosure-mechanism differs (death vs projection-failure). Sibling sub-modes under the same register-class.
Vs Hartman's non-fictional-foreclosure (legacy #6). Hartman's substrate (the historical record of the slave trade) cannot grant the recovery the descendant seeks; the slot-3 fills as the book itself as the acknowledgment of failure. Binnie's substrate (the projection-mechanism of recognizing self by recognizing junior bearer) cannot grant the recognition the bearer seeks; the slot-3 fills as the book itself as the acknowledgment of failure. Same register-class (honest-foreclosure slot-3) across two different engines (legacy/recognition). The class is now confirmed at three specimens across two engines.
Result
Recognition sought pole at trans women register as HONEST FORECLOSURE sub-mode slot-proven. The hole named open in backings.md is closed in the load-bearing way: the pole's slot-1 and slot-2 conditions hold at this register; the slot-3 fills in a previously unnamed sub-mode under the sought pole.
Honest-foreclosure slot-3 register-class confirmed by three-specimen pattern across two engines (Hartman legacy #6, Bechdel recognition #6, Binnie recognition new sub-mode). The class names a slot-3 register where the bearer's active acknowledgment of the engine's wish-shape's structural non-functionality IS the engine's resolution. The class admits multiple foreclosure-mechanisms (historical-record-discontinuity, witness-death, projection-mechanism-failure) under the same slot-3 register-shape. The class is register-level (cross-cuts engines), not engine-specific — a discovery that may shape the synthesis pass to follow.
Sibling specimens: Lose Your Mother (non-fictional-foreclosure, same register-class at legacy engine), Fun Home (posthumous-reconstruction, same register-class at recognition engine), On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous (sought pole's neighbor at the addressed-to-impossible side), Giovanni's Room (recognition refused pole — the bearer-stance Binnie's Maria is NOT taking).
