The reading

The bead. Post-revolutionary anarcho-communist England rendered through Socratic dialogues with the bearer of the past, Hammond: "tyranny has come to an end, and we no longer need such machinery; we could not possibly use it since we are free. Therefore in your sense of the word we have no government." The bearer-of-the-vision (William Guest) does not consummate the engine on his own account; he is ejected back to dingy Hammersmith and assigned to labor in capitalism toward fellowship, "little by little, the new day of fellowship, and rest, and happiness."

Engines

The bundle. Founder-novel cluster's 19th-c. PD pre-cyber ancestor at the partial-refusal pole; sibling to The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia at the 20th-c. sci-fi register. The bistability gate cleared with Le Guin + Rand is reinforced here: Morris and Le Guin share the partial-refusal-pole structural commitment with two different pole-signatures — Morris: bearer-exclusion-from-utopia; Le Guin: warts-named-and-endorsed. Rand at the pure-counterfeit pole (Atlas Shrugged, The Fountainhead) runs the engines without either pole-signature acknowledged. The bistability gate now cleared at three pole-points: partial-refusal × sci-fi (Le Guin), partial-refusal × 19th-c. utopian novel (Morris), pure-counterfeit × political novel (Rand × 2).

Dual-use read. Morris names liberation/autonomy's counterfeit on-page across multiple chapters: property-rights-as-freedom ("the 'rights of property,' which mean the clenching the fist on a piece of goods and crying out to the neighbours, You shan't have this!"); the "civilising" mission of empire ("he was bribed to 'create a market' by breaking up whatever traditional society there might be in the doomed country"); the 19th-c. emancipation-of-women movement gently mocked as superficial (Hammond's laugh at "the Emancipation of Women movement" reads as Morris naming a counterfeit-liberation that addressed surface forms while leaving the property-relation intact). Apotheosis's counterfeit is the prophet-as-fixed-text — the would-be-utopia delivered as substantive blueprint to be implemented. Morris refuses this through Hammond's repeated "you must find that out by living amongst us" and through the Socratic-dialogue structure that resists systematization. Value-flow call (subjective, per the README): the partial-refusal-pole signature is the refusal to convert the vision into a substantive doctrine. Bearer-exclusion is the strongest marker; the civil-war cost is named in the revolutionists' own voice; the Obstinate Refusers chapter acknowledges the structural possibility of refusing the consensus inside fellowship-Nowhere.

Verdict. The 19th-c. PD ancestor of The Dispossessed at the founder-novel cluster's partial-refusal pole, with a Morris-specific pole-signature (bearer-exclusion-from-utopia rather than acknowledged-warts-inside-utopia). Closes. Distinct from Rand's pure-counterfeit pole (engines rendered without acknowledged cost or distance); distinct from Le Guin's partial-refusal pole (acknowledged warts endorsed). Three pole-points now slot-proven within the founder-novel cluster.

Evidence. ✓ slot-proven — full record at News from Nowhere; Or, An Epoch of Rest. Slot-test cleared via verbatim quotes from Gutenberg #3261 (1908 Longmans, Green & Co. edition); discriminations from unleashing (no held-back capacity discharged) and belonging (fellowship is slot-3 character of liberation/autonomy, not a separate engine) held cleanly.

The evidence

The 19th-c. PD ancestor of The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia at the founder-novel cluster's partial-refusal pole: Morris's vision of post-revolutionary anarcho-communist England runs the same engine-pair as Le Guin (liberation/autonomy spine + apotheosis also-runs) with a distinctive partial-refusal-pole signature — the bearer of the utopian vision is exiled back to capitalism, assigned to labor toward it from the unhappy present. Le Guin's partial-refusal pole renders acknowledged warts inside the utopia; Morris's partial-refusal pole renders the bearer's structural exclusion from the utopia he sees. Same cluster, different pole-signatures within the partial-refusal pole — Le Guin renders the utopia warts-and-all and endorses it; Morris renders it pure and excludes the bearer from it. Both refuse the pure-counterfeit pole (Rand) where the political vision is the substantive truth without acknowledged cost or distance.

Two engines fill substantively on the verbatim layer:

Engine 1 — Liberation/autonomy (spine)

The slot-1 condition is commercial slavery: the master-wage-property complex of the nineteenth century, named on-page as the imposed constraint that has been thrown off. Hammond's slot-1 diagnosis is rendered through a series of Socratic dialogues with Guest, the strongest slot-1 statement coming in the property/government chapter:

"And now that all this is changed, and the 'rights of property,' which mean the clenching the fist on a piece of goods and crying out to the neighbours, You shan't have this!—now that all this has disappeared so utterly that it is no longer possible even to jest upon its absurdity, is such a Government possible?" (l. 2850, Ch. XI)

The full slot-1 register of commercial slavery is given in Hammond's account of the world-market chapter:

"they had reached a wonderful facility of production, and in order to make the most of that facility they had gradually created (or allowed to grow, rather) a most elaborate system of buying and selling, which has been called the World-Market; and that World-Market, once set a-going, forced them to go on making more and more of these wares, whether they needed them or not." (l. 3480, Ch. XV)
"the happiness of the workman at his work, nay, his most elementary comfort and bare health, his food, his clothes, his dwelling, his leisure, his amusement, his education—his life, in short—did not weigh a grain of sand in the balance against this dire necessity of 'cheap production' of things, a great part of which were not worth producing at all." (l. 3498, Ch. XV)

The slot-2 mechanism is the Revolution + the two-year civil war — Morris is unflinching about the cost. The slot-2 invariant (the cost the bearer pays) lands as the revolutionists' explicit acceptance of total destruction rather than re-enslavement:

"It was a common saying amongst them, Let the country be cleared of everything except valiant living men, rather than that we fall into slavery again!" (l. 4804, Ch. XVIII)
"the world was being brought to its second birth; how could that take place without a tragedy?" (l. 4833, Ch. XVIII)

The slot-3 invariant — the freedom seized, savored as freedom — fills as the post-revolutionary "we are free" condition Hammond describes across twelve dialogue-chapters. The most categorical slot-3 statement is the master-relation refusal:

"a man no more needs an elaborate system of government, with its army, navy, and police, to force him to give way to the will of the majority of his equals, than he wants a similar machinery to make him understand that his head and a stone wall cannot occupy the same space at the same moment." (l. 2777, Ch. XI)
"tyranny has come to an end, and we no longer need such machinery; we could not possibly use it since we are free. Therefore in your sense of the word we have no government." (l. 2939, Ch. XI)

Slot-3 fills at the work-as-pleasure register too — Morris's signature contribution to the cluster, distinct from Le Guin's Anarres (where labor is shared/distributed but not aestheticized) and from Rand's producer-mastery register (where labor is heroic individual discipline). Morris's slot-3 register is work-as-art-and-play:

"No reward of labour?" said Hammond, gravely. "The reward of labour is life. Is that not enough?" (l. 3405, Ch. XV)
"all work is now pleasurable; either because of the hope of gain in honour and wealth with which the work is done, which causes pleasurable excitement, even when the actual work is not pleasant; or else because it has grown into a pleasurable habit, as in the case with what you may call mechanical work; and lastly (and most of our work is of this kind) because there is conscious sensuous pleasure in the work itself; it is done, that is, by artists." (l. 3434, Ch. XV)

The slot-3 invariant — freedom seized, savored as freedom — also fills at the relational register, in the love/sex chapter that abolishes property-relations from intimate life as the structural sibling of abolishing them from work:

"Fancy a court for enforcing a contract of passion or sentiment! If such a thing were needed as a reductio ad absurdum of the enforcement of contract, such a folly would do that for us." (l. 2089, Ch. IX)
"all the cases that came into them were matters of property quarrels: and I think, dear guest … that though you do come from another planet, you can see from the mere outside look of our world that quarrels about private property could not go on amongst us in our days." (l. 2077, Ch. IX)

Liberation/autonomy fills cleanly at slot 1, slot 2, and slot 3 across the work-register, the government-register, and the sex/relation register. The unifying slot-3 invariant Morris names is fellowship — the displacement of the master-relation by the relation-of-equals-cooperating.

Engine 2 — Apotheosis (also-runs, partial-refusal-pole)

Apotheosis runs at the structural register peculiar to utopian-novel form: the vision as idea that outlives its bearer. The slot-3 payoff lands in the closing pages as the narrator's transmission of the dream to the nineteenth-century reader:

"Go back again, then, and while you live you will see all round you people engaged in making others live lives which are not their own, while they themselves care nothing for their own real lives—men who hate life though they fear death. Go back and be the happier for having seen us, for having added a little hope to your struggle. Go on living while you may, striving, with whatsoever pain and labour needs must be, to build up little by little the new day of fellowship, and rest, and happiness." (l. 7744-7748, Ch. XXXII closing; Ellen's mournful instruction)
"Yes, surely! and if others can see it as I have seen it, then it may be called a vision rather than a dream." (l. 7750, Ch. XXXII closing)

This is apotheosis at the partial-refusal pole with a Morris-specific signature: the bearer (William Guest) does NOT consummate the engine on his own account; the idea propagates through him to the reader, and the bearer's apotheosis is deferred and assigned-onward. The reader is recruited to do the work Guest cannot finish, building the new day "little by little" from the nineteenth century. The partial-refusal-pole register is structurally distinct from Le Guin's: Shevek's apotheosis is bearer-realized (he delivers the ansible to the Hainish Ambassador as gift-to-all-worlds; he returns to Anarres); Guest's apotheosis is bearer-deferred (he is ejected from utopia and assigned to labor in capitalism toward it).

The deferred-apotheosis register has a forced-exile signature — Morris's bearer is structurally exiled from the utopia he sees, the company refusing to recognize him at the closing feast:

"I felt lonely and sick at heart past the power of words to describe." (l. 7698, Ch. XXXII closing)
"I was really seeing all that new life from the outside, still wrapped up in the prejudices, the anxieties, the distrust of this time of doubt and struggle" (l. 7729, Ch. XXXII closing)

This bearer-exclusion is the Morris-specific partial-refusal-pole signature. Le Guin's bearer enters the utopia willingly and is welcomed; Morris's bearer is refused entry and assigned the labor of building it from outside. Both refuse the pure-counterfeit pole where the bearer simply inhabits the political ideal without distance or cost.

The partial-refusal pole — Morris's structural commitment

Morris's structural commitment is the partial-refusal pole at a different register than Le Guin's. Le Guin renders Anarres' warts on-page (Sabul; the Defense armband; Mitis's "power inheres in a center"); Morris renders Nowhere as relatively pure but structurally excludes the bearer from it, refusing the pure-counterfeit-pole move of letting the bearer simply inhabit the political ideal as substantive truth.

The bearer-exclusion is the strongest partial-refusal-pole marker. Two secondary markers also fill:

  1. The civil-war cost is named on-page (Ch. XVII–XVIII). Morris does not pretend the post-revolutionary fellowship arrived without violence; the two-year civil war is rendered with substantive narrative weight, the dispossessed and the once-rich both paying. "Let the country be cleared of everything except valiant living men, rather than that we fall into slavery again!" (l. 4789) is the slot-2 cost stated in the revolutionists' own voice.
  1. The Obstinate Refusers chapter (Ch. XXVI) — a small but structurally interesting wart-acknowledgement: people in fellowship-Nowhere can refuse the communal haymaking norm and stay home to build a stone house. The girls on the river jeer at them good-humouredly; the refusers persist and are not coerced. The utopia includes the structural possibility of refusing the consensus:
"Some of them up there have got a piece of work which interests them, and they won't go to the haymaking, which doesn't matter at all, because there are plenty of people to do such easy-hard work as that; only, since haymaking is a regular festival, the neighbours find it amusing to jeer good-humouredly at them." (l. 6347, Ch. XXVI, Dick)

Hammond also acknowledges in the government chapter that fellowship can be transgressed: "when the transgressions occur, everybody, transgressors and all, know them for what they are; the errors of friends, not the habitual actions of persons driven into enmity against society" (l. 2990, Ch. XI). The structural admission is modest — transgressions are framed as friend-errors not class-pathology — but it is on-page and not papered over.

Discrimination

Liberation/autonomy vs unleashing. Morris's Nowhere does not discharge a held-back capacity (the unleashing signature). The slot-1 condition is external constraint (the master-wage-property complex), not self-restraint. The slot-2 mechanism is the explicit refusal of the master-relation, not the discharge of some bottled energy. Discrimination clean.

Liberation/autonomy vs belonging. Morris's "fellowship" is doing real engine work — it is named explicitly as the post-master-relation invariant ("when mastery has changed into fellowship", l. 7740, Ch. XXXII). The catalog's belonging engine runs the cult/cell register (found family at the cost of the world outside); Morris's fellowship is civic and worker-cooperative in scope, the slot-3 character of liberation/autonomy at his specific anarcho-communist register rather than a separate engine bundle. The discrimination matches the Le Guin precedent — Le Guin's "we are the children of time" (l. 2594, Dispossessed) is the slot-3 character of liberation/autonomy too, not a separate belonging fire.

Wound does not fire. The narrator's exile from utopia is not a foundational wound he preserves through refusing cures — it is an assignment he is to act on. The wound discrimination guard: would the bearer accept cure-without-cost? Yes — Guest would accept staying in Nowhere if that were on offer; he is ejected, not preserving the ejection. He returns to dingy Hammersmith "not so despairing" (l. 7726) and is assigned to build "little by little the new day of fellowship". Wound-as-position, not wound. Discrimination clean.

Pure-counterfeit pole comparison. Atlas Shrugged's Galt's Gulch is rendered as a substantive truth without acknowledged cost or distance — the producer-self simply inhabits the political ideal, and the strike's destruction is owned by the looters, not the strikers. News from Nowhere's civil-war is owned by the revolutionists on the page (Hammond, the bearer of the past, acknowledges it as "tragedy"), and the bearer is structurally excluded from the post-revolutionary peace. Same engine-family (liberation/autonomy + apotheosis), opposite pole-signatures.

Counterfeit

Liberation/autonomy's counterfeit is manufactured liberation / false freedom — coercion relabeled as liberation. Morris names the counterfeit on-page across multiple chapters:

The slot-2-plug parasitic-structure signature: each counterfeit appears to deliver the liberation-payoff (property-rights = your freedom; civilising mission = their freedom; emancipation-of-women = her freedom) while structurally requiring the master-relation be preserved underneath. Morris's structural commitment is to render these as counterfeits and to render the actual liberation as the destruction of the master-relation itself, paid in the civil war.

Apotheosis's counterfeit is the prophet-as-fixed-text — the would-be-utopia delivered as substantive blueprint to be implemented. Morris refuses this explicitly through Hammond's repeated "you must find that out by living amongst us" (l. 2961, Ch. XII) and through the structural choice to render Nowhere through Socratic dialogues that resist systematization. The vision is transmitted rather than blueprinted; the partial-refusal-pole signature is the refusal to convert the vision into a substantive doctrine.

Result

Two engines fill against Morris's text on the verbatim layer: liberation/autonomy as spine (the displacement of the master-wage-property complex by fellowship, fillable at slot 1 / slot 2 / slot 3 across the work, government, and sex/relation registers) + apotheosis as also-runs at the partial-refusal pole (the vision transmitted to the reader as work to be done, bearer-realization deferred and assigned-onward). The founder-novel cluster's 19th-c. PD pre-cyber ancestor at the partial-refusal pole, sibling to The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia at the 20th-c. sci-fi register. The bistability gate the catalog cleared with Le Guin + Rand is reinforced here: Morris and Le Guin share the partial-refusal-pole structural commitment with two different pole-signatures (Morris: bearer-exclusion-from-utopia; Le Guin: warts-named-and-endorsed); Rand at the pure-counterfeit pole runs the engines without either pole-signature acknowledged.

Closes. Adjacent specimens still queued at the founder-novel cluster: Hunchback of Notre Dame as masked-vigilante trope-bundle third specimen (task surfaced). The bistability gate is now cleared at three pole-points — partial-refusal × sci-fi (Le Guin), partial-refusal × 19th-c. utopian novel (Morris), pure-counterfeit × political novel (Rand × 2).
