The reading

The bead. A 1974 anarchist-utopian SF novel set across two worlds — propertarian Urras and the anarcho-syndicalist exile-colony moon Anarres founded by the followers of Odo — following the physicist Shevek as he becomes the first to travel between them, with the ambiguous in the subtitle the point: Anarres is genuinely different and genuinely insufficient, and the novel refuses to deliver utopia-as-deliverable.

Engines

The bundle. The catalog's cleanest specimen of the founder-novel cluster at the partial-refusal pole (foundational-moment-bistability), the anarchist canonical-mirror to Rand's Atlas Shrugged + The Fountainhead at the pure-counterfeit pole. Anarres' partial-refusal is rendered with acknowledged warts — Sabul's bureaucratic-power; the Defense armband; Mitis's warning "Power inheres in a center" — AND the anarchist ideal is endorsed as the home Shevek chooses, decisively, to return to. Dual-use read. Substantively enabling with the ambiguity Le Guin built in. The slot-2 deficits of Anarres (the social-pressure conformity; the famine years; the closure of innovation by mutual-criticism) are named in the text by Shevek and by Bedap. The engine runs at enabling precisely because the slot-2 deficits are not bypassed. Liberation/autonomy's counterfeit (manufactured liberation / false freedom) is shown explicitly through Shevek's diagnosis of Urras's freedom-as-property-rights ("There is no freedom. It is a box—Urras is a box… you open the box, and what is inside it? A black cellar full of dust, and a dead man"). Apotheosis's counterfeit is the Atro figure: idea-as-leverage-for-status. Shevek refuses both counterfeits explicitly.

Verdict. Foundational specimen of liberation/autonomy + apotheosis at the founder-novel cluster's partial-refusal pole. Closes (the anarchist mirror to Rand canon) by showing both substantive engine-running AND the partial-refusal-pole structural acknowledgement that distinguishes Le Guin from Rand. The catalog's first slot-proven specimen of the anarchist mutual-aid cooperation backing the catalog has named as a hole (backings liberation backing #4).

The evidence

The anarchist canonical-mirror to Rand's Atlas Shrugged + The Fountainhead tasks #112/#113 (both currently pending), tested against the anarchist-mirror prompt. Le Guin's structural commitment is the partial-refusal pole of the founder-novel pattern: the anarchist utopia Anarres is rendered with acknowledged warts (the petty bureaucratic tyranny of Sabul + the Sequency-physics mafia; the foreman-pattern Defense armband; the "false egalitarianism" Mitis warns Shevek against; the pull of power inheres in a center that Anarres's structural commitment is supposed to prevent) AND simultaneously endorsed as the home Shevek chooses, decisively, to return to. The bistability lives in the novel's own subtitle: An Ambiguous Utopia.

Two confirmed engines fill substantively on the verbatim layer:

Engine 1 — Liberation/autonomy (spine)

The opening pages establish the slot-1 condition as the wall — the only boundary on Anarres, the structural marker of the anarchist refusal of the State. The wall is rendered explicitly as a Le Guinian bistability:

"Looked at from one side, the wall enclosed a barren sixty-acre field called the Port of Anarres. … It was in fact a quarantine. The wall shut in not only the landing field but also the ships that came down out of space, and the men that came on the ships, and the worlds they came from, and the rest of the universe. It enclosed the universe, leaving Anarres outside, free." (l. 50)
"Looked at from the other side, the wall enclosed Anarres: the whole planet was inside it, a great prison camp, cut off from other worlds and other men, in quarantine." (l. 51)

The slot-1 condition — the imposed constraint to throw off — is masters, not the wall. Shevek's Tabaal dream-vision-during-fever (early in his Urras stay) and the longer arc of his work-life under Sabul establish the constraint structurally. The slot-2 mechanism is the explicit, costly refusal of masters Shevek delivers in his closing dialogue with the Terran Ambassador, Keng:

"I came for the idea. For the sake of the idea. To learn, to teach, to share in the idea. On Anarres, you see, we have cut ourselves off. We don't talk with other people, the rest of humanity. I could not finish my work there. And if I had been able to finish it, they did not want it, they saw no use in it. So I came here. … And though I was very stupid I saw at last that by pursuing the one, the physics, I am betraying the other. I am letting the propertarians buy the truth from me." (l. 2305-ish; the closing dialogue with Keng in the Terran embassy)
"I will not serve any master." (l. 2317)

The slot-3 invariant — the freedom seized, savored as freedom — fills as Shevek's return to Anarres. The terminal scene is the bearer-realizable payoff named in Shevek's own voice, the conscious choice to walk back through the wall:

"I will lie down to sleep on Anarres tonight," he thought. "I will lie down beside Takver. I wish I'd brought the picture, the baby sheep, to give Pilun." (l. 2606)
"But he had not brought anything. His hands were empty, as they had always been." (l. 2607)

The empty hands — the Beggarman pose Shevek announces on his arrival on Urras ("I am, you know, the Beggarman," l. 501) — is the bearer-realizable signature of liberation/autonomy at Le Guin's specific anarchist register: not-owning is what makes the bearer free. The return-to-Anarres consummates the engine: Shevek chooses freedom by refusing to bring property home with him.

The Hainish-Ambassador Ketho chooses to walk through the wall with Shevek — the engine's extension into another bearer, the anarchism propagating beyond the protagonist:

"Once you are there, once you walk through the wall with me, then as I see it you are one of us. We are responsible to you and you to us; you become an Anarresti, with the same options as all the others. But they are not safe options. Freedom is never very safe." (l. 2590)
"We are the children of time," Shevek said, in Pravic. The younger man looked at him a moment, and then repeated the words in Iotic: "We are the children of time." (l. 2594)

The engine consummates and extends — Anarres opens to a second bearer, and the freedom-is-never-safe formula lands on Shevek's own authority. Liberation/autonomy fills cleanly at slot 1, slot 2, and slot 3 with the bearer-realizable signature.

Engine 2 — Apotheosis (also-runs)

The General Temporal Theory + the ansible — Shevek's terminal contribution to the universe — runs apotheosis as an also-runs engine. The slot-3 payoff lands in the same Keng conversation: the idea survives the bearer, the idea makes leaps the bearer cannot, the idea changes the lives of billions:

"What they want," he said, "is the instantaneous transferral of matter across space. Transilience. Space travel, you see, without traversal of space or lapse of time. They may arrive at it yet; not from my equations, I think. But they can make the ansible, with my equations, if they want it. Men cannot leap the great gaps, but ideas can." (l. 2301)
"Do you know, Shevek, I think your very simple matter might change the lives of all the billions of people in the nine Known Worlds?" (l. 2304, Keng)

The apotheosis's slot-3 — the bearer transcends material defeat through the idea that outlives them — fills cleanly. But the engine is bundled in service of liberation/autonomy: Shevek's structural commitment is that the ansible cannot be SOLD; it must be GIVEN as a gift to all the worlds (not just to Urras, not just to Anarres, but to Hain and Terra equally). The apotheosis is delivered through the liberation/autonomy machinery:

"Is there no alternative to selling? Is there not such a thing as the gift?" (l. 2311)

This is the partial-refusal pole of apotheosis — the engine delivers (the idea is real; it propagates) but the bearer refuses the apotheosis-counterfeit (the would-be hero-glorification, the would-be sale-for-status, the would-be Cetian-mind-recognized-as-superior). The contrast with Atro's apotheosis-pure-counterfeit-pole pitch is sharp:

"They'll get it, of course. Eventually. And they ought to. Scientific truth will out, you can't hide the sun under a stone. But before they get it, I want them to pay for it! I want us to take our rightful place. I want respect; and that's what you can win us. … We should come in like noblemen, with a great gift in our hands—that's how it should be." (l. 940, Atro)

Atro is Urras's apotheosis-counterfeit on the page: the idea-as-leverage-for-status, the gift-as-loaded-weapon. Shevek's structural refusal is the partial-refusal-pole: the apotheosis-payoff arrives, but the counterfeit is named on-page and refused.

The partial-refusal pole — Le Guin's structural commitment

The novel's subtitle (An Ambiguous Utopia) names the structural commitment: Anarres is rendered with acknowledged warts. The Sabul figure is the partial-refusal-pole's clearest specimen — the anarchist who has gathered power-in-a-center despite the anarchist structural commitment against it, Mitis's warning to Shevek making the partial-refusal-pole explicit:

"Don't let false egalitarianism ever trick you. You'll work with Sabul, he's good, he'll work you hard. But you should be free to find the line you want to follow. Stay here one more quarter, then go. And take care, in Abbenay. Keep free. Power inheres in a center. You're going to the center. I don't know Sabul well; I know nothing against him; but keep this in mind; you will be his man." (l. 436)

"Power inheres in a center" is the structural acknowledgement that Anarres has not abolished hierarchy; it has only relabeled it. The Defense armband (l. 53, "a sight almost as rare as a spaceship") is the same finding at the macro-political register — Anarres does have an armed force, even if it is rare and ad-hoc. The anarchist utopia has warts; Le Guin is honest about them; the novel STILL endorses Anarres as the home Shevek returns to.

This is the bistability gate that distinguishes Le Guin from Rand. Rand's Galt's Gulch / Roark's architecture office are rendered without acknowledged warts — the politics is the authorial blind-spot the work absorbs. Le Guin's Anarres is rendered WITH warts AND endorsed: bistable, honest, partial-refusal. This is the cleanest available specimen of the founder-novel pattern at the partial-refusal-pole, sibling to Ries 2011 Lean Startup at the startup-canon cluster's partial-refusal-pole. The structural test surfaced in foundational-moment-bistability generalizes from the bistability-of-canonical-pair-moments to the bistability of political canon founding novels.

Discrimination

Liberation/autonomy vs unleashing. Shevek does not discharge a held-back capacity; he refuses external ownership-relations (the propertarian system, the master-relation). Slot-1 is external constraint, not self-restraint. Discrimination clean.

Apotheosis vs liberation/autonomy. The ansible is the idea-outliving-bearer payoff (apotheosis); the return-to-Anarres is the not-serving-master payoff (liberation/autonomy). Two engines, two payoffs, both bearer-realizable on Shevek's own authority. The novel runs them in series — apotheosis (deliver the idea to all worlds) + liberation/autonomy (return to Anarres, refusing the propertarian master-relation).

Wound does not fire here. Shevek has no foundational wound he preserves through refusing cures. The closest near-fit is Shevek's loneliness-on-Urras — he is in pain in the Iotic embassy, but the structural commitment is to return to where he can serve no master, not to preserve the loneliness as identity. The wound discrimination guard (would the bearer accept cure-without-cost?) — yes, Shevek would accept the cure of being able to return home, and the engine pays out that return. Wound-as-backstory, not wound. Discrimination clean — matches the same pattern the catalog surfaced in for V for Vendetta + Phantom of the Opera.

Counterfeit

Liberation/autonomy's counterfeit is manufactured liberation / false freedom — coercion relabeled as liberation. The Dispossessed shows this on-page through Shevek's diagnosis of Urras's freedom-as-property-rights:

"There is no freedom. It is a box—Urras is a box, a package, with all the beautiful wrapping of blue sky and meadows and forests and great cities. And you open the box, and what is inside it? A black cellar full of dust, and a dead man." (l. 2326)

The "freedom" Urras advertises — the propertarian, capitalist, beautiful-wrapping freedom — is the counterfeit on the page, the master-relation-disguised-as-choice. Le Guin renders the counterfeit pitilessly through Shevek's Urras stay (the Iotic women's flirtations, the press's distortions, the Saio Pae's seduction-by-physics-recognition), and the structural-honesty of the partial-refusal-pole comes from the novel's refusal to pretend Anarres is freedom's pure-pole. Anarres is the partial-refusal — better than Urras, not pure.

Apotheosis's counterfeit is the Atro figure: idea-as-leverage, gift-as-loaded-weapon, Cetian-mind-recognized-as-superior. Shevek refuses the counterfeit explicitly by giving the ansible-equations to all the worlds at no charge.

Result

Two engines fill against Le Guin's text on the verbatim layer: liberation/autonomy as spine + apotheosis as also-runs, both at the partial-refusal-pole of the founder-novel pattern. The catalog's cleanest anarchist-canon specimen, sibling to Atlas Shrugged + Fountainhead (tasks #112/#113, both pending) at the founder-novel-cluster's bistable-pair structure. The Dispossessed fills the partial-refusal-pole; the Rand canon fills the pure-counterfeit-pole (the politics-as-authorial-blind-spot register).
