The reading
The bead. To break the ceiling of mortal limits and seize god-like power itself — not earned by a regimen, not conferred by a destiny-mark, but grasped.
Engines
- apotheosis · content · spine · ✓ — Faustus, having exhausted every mortal discipline ("Yet art thou still but Faustus, and a man"), bargains for deity ("A sound magician is a mighty god"); the power is poured in by the pact (granted, not built through a regimen → not mastery) and grasped by his own ambition with no mark or chosen-ness (seized, not conferred → not election); he commands Mephistophilis and conjures Helen's shade.
Dual-use read. Apotheosis's counterfeit is "realize your own divinity" — the unlock-your-god-mode grift: you are already divine/limitless; claim it and the powers attend you. The documented ancestor is Ralph Waldo Trine's In Tune with the Infinite (#23559), the New-Thought ur-source behind modern manifesting / law-of-attraction (and the Limitless "a protocol grants the ascent" pitch). The difference is the wish-valence guard: Faustus's godhood is bought with a real, costly ascent (the pact, and damnation — the engine enables the fantasy of transcending limits), where the counterfeit grants slot-3 power by mere realization and skips the slot-2 ascent entirely (substitutes — godhood on credit, with failure routed back to insufficient belief, the manifesting bind). Value-flow call is subjective, per the README — Faustus sits on the enabling side (the ascent and its price are dramatized in full).
Consumption. Light — a canon/erudition badge ("I've read Marlowe"); the work's force is at the content layer.
Verdict. Apotheosis's public-domain specimen and the one that controls the election leak ACOMAF left open: god-like power with no mark, grasped by will. The honest caveat (the now-familiar literary pattern): Marlowe prosecutes the wish — Faustus is damned, the deity proves hollow — so the fantasy the work services is unmistakably apotheosis while the frame condemns it, exactly as Jekyll/Hyde and Monte Cristo pre-moralize unleashing. The un-moralized, savored form lives in modern genre (ACOMAF, LitRPG/cultivation); the slots are about wish structure, which fills clean.
Evidence. Slot-proven — The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus (all three slots verbatim against Gutenberg #779). The first specimen is A Court of Mist and Fury (ACOTAR #2) (ACOTAR #2, in-copyright, cited to chapter — where the power is conferred rather than grasped); the counterfeit is in counterfeit-catalog (Trine, #23559).
The evidence
Second specimen for the apotheosis candidate (first specimen: A Court of Mist and Fury (ACOTAR #2)). Its job, per the gate: be maximally different from ACOMAF and control the election leak the first specimen flagged. ACOMAF leaked election — Feyre's power came with being Made by the Cauldron, a mark. The second specimen must show power-ascension with no mark, no chosen-ness at all.
Maximal difference is total: where Maas gives a Made fae queen in a romance, Marlowe gives a Renaissance scholar who bargains for godhood in a damnation tragedy. The control is exact: Faustus is not chosen — he reaches for deity by his own will. If the apotheosis slots fill here, the gradient is independent of any election mark.
Slot 1 — Ordinary limits
Faustus has exhausted every human discipline (logic, medicine, law, divinity) and each leaves him merely mortal — the limit chafes:
"Yet art thou still but Faustus, and a man." (l. 155)
The specific limit is mortality itself — the thing no human art transcends:
"Couldst thou make men to live eternally, / Or, being dead, raise them to life again, / Then this profession were to be esteem'd." (ll. 156–158)
Slot 2 — The ascent (seized, not granted-by-a-mark)
The wish is named outright as omnipotence / deity — the apotheosis payoff in plain words:
"O, what a world of profit and delight, / Of power, of honour, of omnipotence, / Is promis'd to the studious artizan!" (ll. 198–200)
"A sound magician is a mighty god" (l. 207)
And — the election-control — the ascent is something Faustus reaches for by his own will, not a destiny conferred on him:
"Ay, these are those that Faustus most desires." (l. 197)
The power arrives by pact (Mephistophilis is bound to serve him), so like ACOMAF it is granted, not earned through a regimen — the mastery-separation holds. But unlike ACOMAF there is no Cauldron, no Making, no mark: Faustus is not special and is not chosen; he grasps deity. That is precisely the election leak controlled.
Slot 3 — Supreme power wielded
The payoff is command over nature and spirits — power without ceiling:
"Shall I make spirits fetch me what I please, / Resolve me of all ambiguities, / Perform what desperate enterprise I will?" (ll. 236–238)
The pact delivers it: Faustus commands Mephistophilis, conjures, raises the dead shade of Helen. The wish the play is built to gratify is the god-like dominion itself.
Wish-valence guard, and the leak controlled
The guard holds on both axes that define apotheosis. Not mastery: the power is poured in by the pact, not built by a regimen — Faustus does no training; he signs. (Consistent with ACOMAF, where the High Lords pour it in.) Not election: and here is the second specimen's whole contribution — the power is seized by ambition, not conferred by a mark. Feyre was Made (a latent election mechanism); Faustus is an ordinary scholar who wants deity and bargains for it. Across two maximally different works — one where the power is conferred, one where it is grasped — the payoff is the same (supreme, god-like power), and in neither is the payoff a destiny. Apotheosis fills independent of election.
Result — and an honest pre-moralization
All three slots fill on a specimen maximally different from ACOMAF, and the election leak is controlled: god-like power with no mark, grasped by will. The guard holds (granted-not-earned → not mastery; power-not-destiny → not election). Apotheosis now has two clean specimens with the guard, and with the counterfeit shown — the "realize your own divinity" New-Thought grift (Trine's In Tune with the Infinite; modern manifesting / "unlock your god-mode," counterfeit-catalog) — apotheosis is a confirmed engine.
The honest caveat (the now-familiar pattern): Doctor Faustus moralizes its wish — Faustus is damned, the Good Angel warns throughout, the deity proves hollow and the bill comes due. So the fantasy the work services (to grasp godhood, "a mighty god") is unmistakably apotheosis, but the work prosecutes it — exactly as Jekyll/Hyde and Monte Cristo pre-moralize unleashing. The un-moralized, savored apotheosis lives in modern genre (ACOMAF, LitRPG/cultivation); the PD literary specimen comes with the hubris-punished frame. The slots are about wish structure, which fills; the moralization is logged, not disqualifying (it is the same shape mastery's and unleashing's literary specimens showed).
