Dual-use log

The thesis (The claim): every engine is dual-use — the same machinery that powers benign wish-fulfillment also works as its counterfeit (the project's term of art for the dark pole — the badge minus its backing: slot-3 identity granted, slot-2 cost skipped). Each engine thus has a genuine form and a counterfeit. Some engines have their faces merely stated in the README (repricing → resentment-populism, unleashing → grievance-radicalization — the two still awaiting a shown specimen); this log is where a face is shown on a page, with citations — the demonstration that lets a candidate graduate (mastery, redemption, being-desired, order/legibility, the double life, apotheosis, legacy/transcendence — and now belonging (the cult, via Fight Club) — each shown here).

Unlike the content slots, the counterfeit is not mechanically slot-testable: a recruitment text has no protagonist-arc to fill. What it shares with the fiction is the wish the engine services. The demonstration: (1) name the engine's wish from the validated fiction; (2) show a real persuasion text exploiting that exact wish; (3) apply the value-flow gate (does the badge substitute for the commitment, or enable it?), which stays explicitly subjective per the README.


mastery — the counterfeit: social-Darwinist / meritocratic contempt

The wish (from the validated fiction). Mastery's wish-valence guard: the capability is the payoff, and the release is earned through the regimen. On the page:

"It was his by right. He had earned it" (The Call of the Wild, l. 1265)
"This first theft marked Buck as fit to survive in the hostile Northland environment" (l. 676)

The benign face is real and self-evident: anyone can build capability through the regimen — the Crusoe gospel of effort. It enables.

The hinge, visible in the fiction itself. London does not state the wish as one dog's luck; he states it as a law of fitness — Buck is "fit to survive," his dominance "earned," the unfit meet "swift and terrible death." Read as a one-dog arc it is mastery; read as a general principle about the strong and the weak it is social Darwinism. The same sentences do both. That is the dual-use seam — not a second text, the same text in two registers.

The counterfeit in the wild. The identical grammar, deployed to persuade, in William Graham Sumner's What Social Classes Owe to Each Other (1883, Project Gutenberg #18603) — the American social-Darwinist classic. First it grants the reader the slot-3 identity (you are one of the earned, the fit):

"The man who by his own effort raises himself above poverty" — set against "the good-for-nothing" (ll. 461–463)

then it turns the "earned" righteousness into licensed contempt for the unfit:

"the negligent, shiftless, inefficient, silly, and imprudent are fastened upon the industrious and prudent ... a dead-weight on the society" (ll. 427–434)
"A drunkard in the gutter is just where he ought to be, according to the fitness and tendency of things. Nature has set up on him the process of decline and dissolution by which she removes things which have survived their usefulness." (ll. 2406–2410)

The dual-use point. Mastery's benign face says you can build capability (it enables the regimen). Its counterfeit grants the feeling of being one of the earned/fit — the slot-3 identity — without the regimen, and points the "earned" righteousness outward as deserved contempt for the "unfit." Same wish (earned capability is righteous), opposite value-flow. Buck's "fit to survive / his by right" and Sumner's "drunkard ... just where he ought to be" are the same machine: the first sells a primal-mastery fantasy, the second sells the doctrine that the weak deserve their fate.

Value-flow gate (subjective, per the README). Benign when holding the wish enables building real capability (you train, you make the pot, you bake the bread). Dark — recruitment — when the badge of "I am one of the deserving fit" substitutes for the build and licenses contempt for out-groups. The mastery engine cannot tell the two apart; only the value-flow can, which is why this stays a subjective section, out of the mechanical test.

Verdict. Mastery's counterfeit is shown on a page. With two clean specimens (Crusoe, Buck), fillable slots, a wish-valence guard, and now the counterfeit shown, mastery clears every promotion gate the project set. It is ready to graduate from candidate to a confirmed engine in the README's thesis — held only so it can graduate alongside redemption once redemption's dark twin (cheap grace) is shown the same way.



redemption — the counterfeit: cheap grace (absolution without atonement)

The wish (from the validated fiction). Redemption's wish: the relief of being made morally clean after guilt. But A Christmas Carol earns it through costly atonement — Scrooge actually makes amends:

"I'll raise your salary, and endeavour to assist your struggling family" (Stave V, ll. 3848–3849); "He did it all, and infinitely more" (l. 3855)

Redemption's wish-valence guard (derived). Mirroring mastery: the absolution must be earned through costly atonement, not declared or purchased. The slot-2 turn must be real and cost something. The benign face enables real amends.

The hinge: the dark twin grants slot 3 while skipping slot 2. "Cheap grace" is the feeling of being washed clean without the atonement that earns it.

The counterfeit in the wild. The sale of indulgences — absolution as purchase, atonement skipped — preserved and condemned in Luther's 95 Theses (Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences, Project Gutenberg #274). The pitch grants absolution for a coin:

"27. They preach man who say that so soon as the penny jingles into the money-box, the soul flies out [of purgatory]." (ll. 158–159)

the revenue/recruitment motive is named:

"28. It is certain that when the penny jingles into the money-box, gain and avarice can be increased" (ll. 161–162)

and the giveaway that it is cheap — relief without becoming better, i.e. atonement skipped:

"44. ... by pardons man does not grow better, only more free from penalty." (ll. 217–218)

Luther also states redemption's guard in the same breath — real contrition, not the purchased paper, is what earns remission:

"36. Every truly repentant Christian has a right to full remission of penalty and guilt, even without letters of pardon." (ll. 189–190)

The dual-use point. Redemption's benign face is real moral repair through costly atonement (it enables the amends). Its counterfeit grants the feeling of being forgiven / washed clean / on the right side without the costly amends — which recruits because absolution-without-cost is intoxicating. Same wish (relief of being made clean), opposite value-flow. The indulgence and Scrooge's reformation run the same machine; only one pays the slot-2 price.

Value-flow gate (subjective, per the README). Benign when the absolution enables real amends; dark — recruitment — when the badge of "I am forgiven / one of the good" substitutes for the amends and licenses moving on without repair.


being-desired — the counterfeit: the art of manufactured desire (PUA / looksmaxxing)

The wish (from the validated fiction). Being-desired's wish: to be wanted as you are, the desire involuntary and directed at you for being you — not earned by changing. On the page the desire explicitly exceeds any merit the protagonist can see, and lands on her unaltered:

"You're not like anyone I've ever known. You fascinate me." (Edward, Twilight, Ch. 12)
"I love you," he whispered ... "Thorns and all." (Tamlin, ACOTAR, Ch. 27)

The wish-valence guard (Twilight, A Court of Thorns and Roses): desired as she is, no trait-reversal — Bella stays "an insignificant little girl," Feyre keeps "my insignificant human heart," and both are wanted anyway. The benign face is real: being loved as you actually are.

The hinge: the dark twin grants slot 3 while skipping slot 2. Being-desired's slot 2 is the one who wants — desire that arrives involuntarily, for you as you are. The recruitment move converts that into its inverse: desire as a deliverable you engineer. It still promises the slot-3 payoff (you will be wanted) but skips the slot-2 reality (that real being-desired is the other's unbidden response to the actual you) — you manufacture the appearance of desirability instead of being desirable.

The counterfeit in the wild. The canonical text is the oldest one: Ovid's Ars Amatoria (The Art of Love, Project Gutenberg #47677, Riley's translation) — the literal ancestor of the modern seduction-protocol genre (The Game and its descendants trace to it). Its proem sells the whole being-desired wish as an acquirable art:

"Should any one of the people not know the art of loving, let him read me; and taught by me, on reading my lines, let him love. ... by art is Love, to be guided. ... Me, too, skilled in my craft, has Venus made the guardian of Love." (Book I, ll. 49–54)

Read this, run the art, and you will be loved — the wish delivered by technique, not by being worth it. Book III, advising women how to be desired, makes the slot-2 skip literal: be wanted by hiding what you actually are.

"by art a colour is sought superior to the genuine one" (Book III, l. 1785)
"Few, however, are the forms free from defect. Conceal your blemishes; and, so far as you can, hide the imperfections of your person." (Book III, ll. 1891–1892)

This is the precise inverse of the fiction's wish. The fiction's payoff is to be wanted thorns and all, flaws seen and chosen; Ovid's program is to be wanted by concealing the thorns — desirability as a manufactured surface. Same payoff sold (being desired), opposite relation to the real self.

The contemporary form. The present-day vector is the manosphere / PUA / looksmaxxing protocol literature: the same "run the protocol and you will be wanted" pitch, with one darker turn Ovid lacks — when the manufactured desire doesn't arrive, the protocol routes the failure to grievance (desire is owed; its absence is a rigged system), the incel terminus. Ovid is cited above because it is public-domain and shows the shape verbatim; the present-day specimen is wanted for the contemporary register, not because the face is unshown (it is) — the way Sumner carried mastery's after Carnegie 404'd.

That contemporary specimen is now in hand, and it splits into the tactic and the ideology. The Game (Strauss, 2005) makes slot-3-minus-slot-2 literal — desire as a deliverable engineered by technique, not earned by being worth wanting. The "average frustrated chump" (AFC) is reformed not into a more desirable man but into one who has drilled "all those memorized routines and learned patterns of behavior," on the movement's founding axiom, "Attraction is not a choice" — desire as a lever the operator pulls, the other's involuntary response (being-desired's real slot 2) re-cast as a mechanism to trigger. The Rational Male (Tomassi, 2013) supplies the worldview and the grievance terminus Ovid lacks: desire reframed as a hypergamous market ("Sexual Market Value"; "Hypergamy"), and when the wish does not arrive the failure routes to bitterness — the book opens on the "Beta husband of 20 years" who "hung himself from a tree" while his hypergamous wife moved to "the new millionaire," and on teaching a nephew "how not to be the Beta his father was." The same payoff sold (you will be wanted), the same skipped reality (be worth wanting), now with the failure mode named — the resentment pipeline the fiction's bright pole (wanted thorns-and-all, Twilight / Fifty Shades) exactly inverts.

Boundary — being-desired's face, not mastery's. Ovid's "art" could be mistaken for mastery's recruitment (learn-a-skill). It isn't: the payoff identity Ovid sells is being loved/wanted (being-desired's slot 3), not being capable (mastery's slot 3). The art is only the mechanism; the thing promised is the being-desired payoff. Engines are sorted by the payoff sold, not the means.

The dual-use point. Being-desired's benign face is being loved as you are (it enables showing your real self and being chosen). Its counterfeit grants the promise of being wanted without being someone worth wanting — you perform the art, conceal the defects, run the protocol. Same wish (to be desired), opposite value-flow.

Value-flow gate (subjective, per the README). Benign when learning to present yourself / build confidence enables genuine, mutual desire. Dark — recruitment — when the protocol substitutes for being someone worth wanting (be desired by concealing the real you) and, at its extreme, curdles into the entitlement that desire is owed.

Verdict. Being-desired's counterfeit is shown on a page. With two clean specimens (Twilight, ACOTAR) maximally different and converging on "insignificant," a wish-valence guard (desired-as-she-is), and now the counterfeit shown, being-desired clears every promotion gate the project set. It graduates from candidate to a confirmed engine.


order/legibility — the counterfeit: counterfeit legibility (the totalizing conspiracy)

The wish (from the validated fiction). Order/legibility's wish: the world made legible — the click of explanation, the escape from the unexplained — for its own sake. On the page the climax is the explanation, and the payoff is the bafflement dissolving into sense:

“All this,” I said, “is exceedingly clear, and, although ingenious, still simple and explicit.” (The Gold-Bug, ll. 4644–4645)
“It saved me from ennui … My life is spent in one long effort to escape from the commonplaces of existence.” (Holmes, The Red-Headed League, ll. 2158–2160)

The wish-valence guard (The Red-Headed League (in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes), The Gold-Bug): the payoff is legibility earned by honest method — observation, deduction, a solution that survives inspection (Legrand's creed, that any enigma may "by proper application" be resolved). The benign face is real: the world is solvable, hidden truth is discoverable, by inquiry.

The hinge: the dark twin grants slot 3 while skipping slot 2. Order/legibility's slot 2 is the method — honest, checkable inquiry. The recruitment move keeps the slot-3 payoff (the click — everything snaps into sense, you now see the hidden order) but skips the slot-2 method: it delivers comprehension by asserting a single hidden cause behind all the disorder, a totalizing explanation that feels like the solved cipher but was never earned by falsifiable inquiry. Counterfeit legibility: the click without the method.

The counterfeit in the wild. The canonical text is the ancestor one: John Robison's Proofs of a Conspiracy (1797, Project Gutenberg #47605) — the Illuminati-panic ur-text, the documented forerunner of the modern conspiracy genre. It grants the reader the slot-3 identity (you now see the one secret cause behind the chaos of the age) by naming a single hidden Association:

“AN ASSOCIATION HAS BEEN FORMED for the express purpose of ROOTING OUT ALL THE RELIGIOUS ESTABLISHMENTS, AND OVERTURNING ALL THE EXISTING GOVERNMENTS OF EUROPE.” (ll. 381–383)

and then makes the most baffling event of the age legible in one stroke, by attributing it to that cause:

“I have seen that the most active leaders in the French Revolution were members of this Association, and conducted their first movements according to its principles…” (ll. 385–388)

The counterfeit of slot-2 method is visible in the grammar. It wears the form of deduction — “I have been able to trace these attempts” (ll. 375–376) — but the object traced is, by its own description, sealed from checking:

“this Association still exists, still works in secret” (ll. 389–390)

A cause that "works in secret" is unfalsifiable: no observation can disconfirm it, because concealment is built into the claim. That is the precise inverse of Legrand's cipher, which is solved by a method anyone can re-run and verify. Same payoff sold (the world made legible, the click of comprehension), opposite relation to evidence: one explanation invites inspection, the other forecloses it.

The contemporary form. The present-day vector is the totalizing conspiracy theory — QAnon, "the Great Reset," "do your own research" routed to a single hidden hand: the same "everything finally makes sense" click, delivered by one secret cause, with one darker turn Robison's static text only implies — when the explanation is unfalsifiable, every disconfirmation becomes further proof (the cover-up is the conspiracy covering its tracks), so the believer is sealed in and the click can never be revoked. Robison is cited here because it is public-domain and shows the shape verbatim — the way Sumner carried mastery's face after Carnegie 404'd, and Ovid carried being-desired's; a present-day text is wanted for a contemporary specimen, not because the face is unshown (it is). That contemporary specimen is now in hand: The Da Vinci Code (Brown, 2003; The Da Vinci Code) voices this counterfeit earnestly at mass-market scale — Teabing's "the greatest cover-up in human history," the bloodline whose suppression is its evidence — and it does the rare thing of holding the genuine engine and its counterfeit in one text: the falsifiable cryptex (force it and the answer self-destructs — the method can be wrong) beside the unfalsifiable Church-conspiracy (nothing refutes it; "every disconfirmation becomes further proof"). The two poles, the same "see the hidden order" wish, separated by exactly slot 2's falsifiability — the guard made visible in a single specimen.

A fictional dramatization (not a pitch). Counterfeit legibility also shows up in fiction as the dystopia a story refuses — most cleanly Camazotz in A Wrinkle in Time (L'Engle 1962; A Wrinkle in Time): a world made flawlessly legible by erasing all difference, the click of total order ("The houses … were all exactly alike … exactly the same number for each house") sold as the conquest of "all illness, all deformity." Meg refuses it with the line that is the engine's guard turned outward — "Like and equal are not the same thing at all!" — the counterfeit shown from the victim's side (order bought by abolishing the irreducible self), the inverse of Robison's recruiter's-side pitch. An illustration, not a slot-proof of the counterfeit (the recruitment ancestor stays Robison); noted here because that same entry slot-proves repricing.

Boundary — order/legibility's face, not repricing's. Robison names an enemy, so the counterfeit could be mistaken for repricing's recruitment (resentment-populism — "you are worth more than they said"). It isn't: the payoff identity counterfeit legibility sells is "I understand — I see what is really going on" (the epistemic click of comprehension), not "I have been undervalued" (repricing's grievance). The conspiracy's first pull is the relief of the world snapping into sense; the out-group is the content of the explanation, not the payoff. Engines are sorted by the payoff sold — here, legibility.

The dual-use point. Order/legibility's benign face is the world made legible through honest, checkable inquiry (it enables real understanding — you solve the cipher, you read the clue, the solution survives inspection). Its counterfeit grants the feeling of total comprehension — everything explained by one hidden cause — without the honest method, and (the tell) structures the claim to be unfalsifiable so the click can never be lost. Same wish (the world made legible), opposite value-flow.

Value-flow gate (subjective, per the README). Benign when the explanation enables checking — it is falsifiable, you can test it, it survives inquiry by others. Dark — recruitment — when the totalizing explanation substitutes for inquiry and is built to be unfalsifiable (every objection absorbed as further proof), so comprehension is permanent and unearned.

Verdict. Order/legibility's counterfeit is shown on a page. With two clean specimens (The Red-Headed League, The Gold-Bug) maximally different and converging on the dispelling of the unexplained, a wish-valence guard (legibility earned by honest method), and now the counterfeit shown, order/legibility clears every promotion gate the project set. the double life — the counterfeit: the secret-superior grift ("the sheeple can't see it")

The wish (from the validated fiction). The double life's wish: to possess a hidden, genuinely superior self and savor being secretly more than the world sees — the gap relished, recognition refused or deferred. On the page the underrating is cultivated and the hidden self is real:

"The mask of the inane fop had been a good one, and the part consummately well played." (The Scarlet Pimpernel, ll. 5956–5957)
"One half of me was the languid Don Diego you all knew, and the other half was the Curse of Capistrano…" (The Mark of Zorro, ll. 9044–9045)

The wish-valence guard (The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Mark of Zorro): the surface is a cultivated mask over a real hidden competence — Percy is the genius rescuer, Diego did secretly train. The benign face is real: you may be more than your station suggests, and can build the hidden self.

The hinge: the dark twin grants slot 3 while skipping slot 2. The double life's slot 2 is the hidden self — a superiority that genuinely exists behind the mask. The recruitment move keeps the slot-3 payoff (you are secretly superior, unseen by the inferior many) but skips the slot-2 reality (the actual hidden competence). It hands over the identity of the secret-superior for the price of reading — and, the decisive move, reframes non-recognition as proof: if the masses don't see your greatness, that confirms it, because they are too blind to see.

The counterfeit in the wild. The canonical public-domain text is the esoteric one: The Kybalion (1908, Project Gutenberg #14209, "Three Initiates" = W. W. Atkinson) — Hermetic "secret knowledge for the few, hidden from the profane." It grants the reader the slot-3 identity directly, the elect against the blind:

"They reserve their pearls of wisdom for the few elect, who recognize their value and who wear them in their crowns, instead of casting them before the materialistic vulgar swine, who would trample them in the mud…" (ll. 180–183)
"The lips of wisdom are closed, except to the ears of Understanding." (ll. 229–230)

The masses are cast as incapable of seeing — and the word it uses is the literal ancestor of "sheeple":

"Look at the strong people, how they manage to implant their seed-thoughts in the minds of the masses of the people… This is why the masses of people are such sheeplike creatures, never originating an idea of their own." (ll. 3209–3214)

And the slot-2 skip is explicit — the elect identity is conferred by reading, on credit: "If you are a true student, you will be able to work out and apply these Principles" (ll. 216–217). You are told you are already one of the few who See; no hidden mastery need be demonstrated. The non-recognition is pre-reframed as persecution by the base — "the multitude, who would again raise the cry of 'Crucify! Crucify'" (l. 211) — so scorn becomes a credential.

The contemporary form. The present-day vector is the "you're secretly extraordinary, the normies can't see it" register — the sheeple trope (a direct descendant of the Kybalion's "sheeplike creatures"), the "awakened" / red-pill / sigma-male flattery: your obscurity is not failure but proof that the inferior many cannot recognize your hidden height. The Kybalion is cited because it is public-domain and shows the shape verbatim — the way Ovid carried being-desired's face and Robison carried order/legibility's; the modern texts are wanted for a present-day specimen, not because the face is unshown (it is).

Boundary — the double life's face, not mastery's social-Darwinism. Both name a superior in-group against inferiors, so the two could blur. They don't: mastery's recruitment licenses contempt for the manifestly unfit on the strength of earned, visible fitness ("the drunkard in the gutter is just where he ought to be"); the double life's flatters a hidden, unrecognized superiority — its hook is "you are MORE than you appear and they can't see it." One sells earned-and-shown; the other sells secret-and-unseen. Engines are sorted by the payoff identity — here, secret superiority.

The dual-use point. The double life's benign face is "you may be more than your station suggests" (it enables building a real hidden self — Diego's training, Percy's craft). Its counterfeit grants the feeling of secret superiority without any hidden competence, and weaponizes non-recognition as confirmation. Same wish (to be secretly more than the world sees), opposite value-flow.

Value-flow gate (subjective, per the README). Benign when "you might be more than they see" enables developing genuine hidden capability that could one day be shown. Dark — recruitment — when the "secretly superior, the sheeple can't see it" identity substitutes for any real hidden competence and seals itself by reading every non-recognition as proof.

Verdict. The double life's counterfeit is shown on a page. With two clean specimens (The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Mark of Zorro) maximally different — and resolving engine-vs-vehicle toward engine (each pays off the secret as such) — a wish-valence guard (cultivated mask over real hidden competence), and now the counterfeit shown, the double life clears every promotion gate the project set. It graduates from candidate to a confirmed engine.


apotheosis — the counterfeit: "realize your own divinity" (the unlock-your-god-mode grift)

The wish (from the validated fiction). Apotheosis's wish: to be held back by ordinary limits and released into supreme, god-like power — the power itself the payoff. On the page the wish is named as deity outright:

"A sound magician is a mighty god" (Doctor Faustus, l. 207)
"It's a power other High Lords might kill for." (ACOMAF, Lucien)

The wish-valence guard (A Court of Mist and Fury (ACOTAR #2), The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus): the payoff is the power, and the ascent is real — Feyre is Made and wields seven courts; Faustus bargains and commands spirits. There is an ascent, with a price (a Cauldron, a pact and damnation). The benign face is real: the power-fantasy of transcending one's limits.

The hinge: the dark twin grants slot 3 while skipping slot 2. Apotheosis's slot 2 is the ascent — a real transformation (and, in both specimens, a real cost). The recruitment move keeps the slot-3 payoff (you are god-like, all power is yours) but skips the slot-2 ascent entirely: it hands you godhood by mere realization — no Cauldron, no pact, no climb, just the affirmation that you were divine all along.

The counterfeit in the wild. The canonical public-domain text is the New-Thought ur-source: Ralph Waldo Trine's In Tune with the Infinite; or, Fullness of Peace, Power, and Plenty (1897, Project Gutenberg #23559) — the documented ancestor of the modern "law of attraction / manifesting / you are the universe" genre. It grants the slot-3 identity directly: you are already God, differing only in degree —

"the life of God and the life of man are identically the same, and so are one … They differ not in essence, in quality; they differ in degree." (ll. 231–233)

and the payoff arrives by realization alone, with all power attendant on it —

"the conscious realization of his own divinity, with all its attendant riches, and glories, and powers" (ll. 3505–3507)

No ascent is required; no price is paid. Where Faustus signs in blood and Feyre dies and is Made, Trine's reader need only realize their divinity, and "all its attendant … powers" follow. That is the slot-2 skip in its purest form — godhood on credit.

The contemporary form. The present-day vector is the "unlock your god-mode" register: manifesting / law-of-attraction ("you are the universe; reality bends to your thought"), the nootropics-and-biohacking Limitless pitch (a pill or a protocol grants the ascent — slot-3 power sold as a purchasable shortcut), the "limitless potential" self-help that grants the feeling of supreme capability without any actual transformation. Trine is cited because it is public-domain and shows the shape verbatim — the way Ovid carried being-desired's face and the Kybalion carried the double life's; a modern instance (Limitless / Glynn) is wanted for a present-day specimen, not because the face is unshown (it is).

Boundary — apotheosis's face, not mastery's or the double life's. All three flatter the recruit with superiority, so they could blur. They don't: mastery's face sells earned, shown fitness (and licenses contempt for the unfit); the double life's sells hidden, unseen superiority ("the sheeple can't see it"); apotheosis's sells god-like power as your birthright, claimable without ascent — the payoff is divinity/power itself, granted by realization. Sorted by the payoff sold: here, godhood.

The dual-use point. Apotheosis's benign face is the fantasy of transcending one's limits through a real (if costly) ascent — it enables the wish for transformation. Its counterfeit grants the feeling of god-like power without any ascent or cost — realize your divinity and the powers attend it. Same wish (to become supremely powerful), opposite value-flow.

Value-flow gate (subjective, per the README). Benign when the power-fantasy motivates a real (effortful, costly) transformation. legacy/transcendence — the counterfeit: "your name will be remembered" (kleos detached from the deed)

The wish (from the validated fiction). Legacy/transcendence's wish: to defeat oblivion — the name outliving the body through a made thing that carries it forward. On the page the payoff is permanence, explicitly traded for mortal life or labour:

II, Project Gutenberg #7142, Crawley translation) — the Western ur-text of glorifying the war dead to move the living, ancestor of every war memorial and "they did not die in vain." It grants the slot-3 identity — eternal remembrance — and the decisive move is that the renown is conferred by the offering of the lives, expressly regardless of whether the enterprise succeeded:

Boundary — legacy's face, not belonging's or apotheosis's. All three can flatter a recruit toward sacrifice, so they could blur. They don't: belonging's recruitment grants the tribe / a place among us now (the cult assigns you a seat); apotheosis's grants god-like power now (godhood on credit); legacy's grants permanence — your name outliving your death. The documented ancestor is Madison Grant's The Passing of the Great Race (1916, Project Gutenberg #68185) — the eugenics text reportedly called "my Bible" by Hitler, the forerunner of racial-hygiene rhetoric. It manufactures the contamination as irreversible (the one-drop reversion): "the result of the mixture of two races, in the long run, gives us a race reverting to the more ancient, generalized and lower type. The cross between a white man and an Indian is an Indian; … and the cross between any of the three European races and a Jew is a Jew." And it supplies the counterfeit cleansing — purity maintained not by any work but by exclusion: "a natural antipathy which serves to maintain the purity of type. … Races must be kept apart by artificial devices of this sort or they ultimately amalgamate and in the offspring the more generalized or lower type prevails."

The contemporary form. The present-day vector is the purity spiral / "great replacement" / "poisoning the blood" rhetoric — the same grant of purity-by-blood and the same manufactured, irreversible contaminant, with one darker turn Grant's static text only implies: when contamination is framed as irreversible and one-drop, the contaminant can never be cleansed, only excluded or eliminated — the eliminationist terminus.

Boundary — purity's face, not redemption's, not belonging's. The payoff identity sold is "I am clean / undefiled" (freedom from contamination), not "I am forgiven" (redemption — a guilt atoned; the defiled here are victims, not sinners) and not "I belong" (belonging — a place in the in-group). With three maximally-different specimens (Dracula, The Metamorphosis, Naaman — the third isolating the engine in the ritual register, where Levitical impurity is explicitly non-moral, controlling the belonging-adjacency the second flagged), fillable slots, a wish-valence guard, and this counterfeit shown, purity/contamination cleared every promotion gate and is a confirmed engine in the README (2026-05-25). It is the first prevention-pole engine (undo a dreaded state, vs the others' approach to a wished identity).


security / safety — the counterfeit: the protection racket (manufactured threat + safety-by-submission)

The wish (from the validated fiction). Security/safety's wish: to be safe — a dreaded harm held off. Its wish-valence guard: safety is earned through a real defense against a real threat, at cost. On the page (Treasure Island, #120), the besieged are made safe only by a real wall ("too strong to pull down without time and labour") held at the price of Redruth's life; in The Three Little Pigs (Project Gutenberg #7439) the brick house earns its safety while the straw and furze houses — safety-theater — are blown in and their builders eaten.

The counterfeit in the wild. The documented ancestor is Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan (1651, Project Gutenberg #3207) — the foundational security-for-submission argument. First it makes the threat maximal, the state of nature a war "such a warre, as is of every man, against every man" (ll. 4016–4017) where life is "continuall feare, and danger of violent death; And the life of man, solitary, poore, nasty, brutish, and short" (ll. 4042–4044). Then it names the redeeming passion: "The Passions that encline men to Peace, are Feare of Death" (l. 4112). Then it supplies the counterfeit — safety bought not by any defense the subject builds but by total surrender to "a common Power to keep them all in awe" (l. 5581), the sovereign whose whole office is "the procuration of the Safety Of The People" (l. 11033). The threat is inflated to the limit precisely so the surrender looks rational.

The contemporary form. The present-day vector is the strongman / security-state / protection-racket pitch — "only we can keep you safe; they are coming for you; surrender X and you'll be protected." The manufactured or inflated threat plus protection-by-submission; the doomsday-cult ("only inside our compound do you survive") is the same grammar at small scale.

Boundary — security's face, not purity's, not mastery's. The payoff identity sold is "I am safe / protected" (freedom from harm), not "I am clean / undefiled" (purity — freedom from contamination; the threat there is defilement, not violence) and not "I am one of the fit" (mastery — earned capability). Impunity — the ideology of unaccountable power (Machiavelli's The Prince)

Impunity's counterfeit is the ideology of unaccountable power: the rules are for the little people; morality and consequences bind only the weak; act without scruple and answer to no one. It grants slot-3 (above-accountability) while skipping slot-2 (the real removal of the check, and answering for what you do) — the badge of being-untouchable handed to those who hold no real immunity.

The documented PD ancestor is Machiavelli's The Prince (Project Gutenberg #1232), the prose that licenses acting without moral accountability:

"it is necessary for a prince wishing to hold his own to know how to do wrong, and to make use of it or not according to necessity" (Ch. XV)
a wise lord "cannot, nor ought he to, keep faith when such observance may be turned against him" (Ch. XVIII)
"it is much safer to be feared than loved" (Ch. XVII)
"in the actions of all men, and especially of princes ... one judges by the result" (Ch. XVIII)

Distinct from mastery's social-Darwinism. The two faces are easy to confuse but pull apart on what they claim: mastery's counterfeit says you are superior / fitter (a claim about desert and breeding — the lineage runs through Nietzsche's master-morality and Galton/Spencer); impunity's says you are not bound (a claim about accountability). The Prince has zero fitness content — its cruelty and faithlessness are licensed by necessity and result, never by the prince being a better kind of man. Corroborating ancestor: Stirner's The Ego and His Own (Project Gutenberg #34580) — "If I have no duty, then I know no law either"; "We owe each other nothing" — egoism as the reader-facing form of the same de-binding.

The guard / value-flow. Benign when the freedom-from-the-check is real and answerable (earned autonomy, legitimate privacy). Dark — recruitment — when the feeling of being above accountability is sold to those with no real immunity: the "rules are for the little people" / sovereign-citizen / strongman-impunity pitch, which licenses the recruit to transgress (and be caught, scammed, or destroyed) while the seller profits. The genuine engine removes the check at real cost (Griffin actually becomes invisible); the counterfeit grants the untouchable identity with no real reach behind it — slot-3 minus slot-2.

Abundance — the luxe life sold minus the means (Wattles' The Science of Getting Rich)

Abundance's counterfeit is the luxe life sold minus the means: you too can have all this; the abundant life is one mindset away; no capital, no labor, no luck required. It grants slot-3 (immersion in plenty) while skipping slot-2 (the real means — the actual wealth that backs and buys the plenty) — the badge of abundance handed to those who hold none of it.

The documented PD ancestor is Wallace D. Wattles' The Science of Getting Rich (1910, #59844), the New Thought root of the modern "abundance mindset." It keeps the slot-3 payoff and names it in abundance's own vocabulary:

"The desire for riches is really the desire for a richer, fuller, and more abundant life" (Ch. I)
the desire "to have money enough to buy all he wants" (Ch. I)

Then it strips out slot-2 — riches by mental method, the means explicitly denied:

"The ownership of money and property comes as a result of doing things in a certain way; those who do things in this Certain Way, whether on purpose or accidentally, get rich; while those who do not do things in this Certain Way, no matter how hard they work or how able they are, remain poor." (Ch. II)

Distinct from apotheosis's Trine. Both are New Thought, both "mental method → outcome," so they are easy to confuse — but they pull apart on the payoff-axis: apotheosis's counterfeit (Trine's In Tune with the Infinite) sells divinity / power ("realize your own divinity"), where Wattles is relentlessly material — money, property, opulence, "money enough to buy all he wants." The movement sorts cleanly by which engine's payoff it promises. (Corroborating ancestor, on the bait mechanism: Veblen's The Theory of the Leisure Class (Project Gutenberg #833) — "Conspicuous consumption of valuable goods is a means of reputability to the gentleman of leisure" — the displayed plenty that drives the pecuniary emulation the influencer economy weaponizes: you pattern your wants on the opulence shown above you.)

The guard / value-flow. Benign when the plenty is real and really possessed (Ali Baba carts home real gold; Sara's Magic is a real benefactor with real means). Dark — recruitment — when the feeling or appearance of abundance is sold to those with no means behind it: the MLM / "boss-babe" / luxury-influencer pipeline, which sells the lifestyle photo and the starter kit to those who fund the seller's actual plenty. The genuine engine delivers the plenty; the counterfeit grants the abundant identity with nothing behind it — slot-3 minus slot-2.


Virtue of defeat — ressentiment / the sanctified-grievance grift (Nietzsche's slave-morality)

Virtue of defeat's counterfeit is ressentiment — the sanctified-grievance grift: your defeat is your halo; the strong are evil by their strength; your lack is itself your virtue. It grants slot-3 (moral superiority held through defeat) while faking slot-2 (the real renounced victory — the winning move you had and refused at cost): the counterfeit relabels an ordinary loss, mere incapacity, as principled sanctity, with nothing paid.

The documented PD ancestor is Friedrich Nietzsche, who described the move from the outside and named it precisely. In Beyond Good and Evil (#4363, section 260) the slaves revalue the traits of their own defeated condition into virtues, and recast the strong as evil:

the abused, the oppressed, the suffering "should moralize … it is here that sympathy, the kind, helping hand, the warm heart, patience, diligence, humility, and friendliness attain to honour" (section 260)
"the 'evil' man arouses fear; according to master-morality, it is precisely the 'good' man who arouses fear" (section 260)

The Genealogy of Morals (#52319, I.13) is sharper still — and Nietzsche's own word for the mechanism is counterfeiting, exactly cupel's term of art for the dark pole:

"These birds of prey are evil, and he who is as far removed from being a bird of prey, who is rather its opposite, a lamb,—is he not good?" (I.13)
the slaves' "prudence of the lowest order … has, thanks to the counterfeiting and self-deception of weakness, come to masquerade in the pomp of an ascetic, mute, and expectant virtue, just as though the very weakness of the weak … were a voluntary result, something wished, chosen, a deed, an act of merit." (I.13)

That last line is the structure: the counterfeit presents weakness — the absence of a renounced victory — as if it were the genuine renunciation (the real deed, the real slot-2 cost). The genuine bearer (Socrates, Cyrano) actually had the winning move and refused it; the counterfeit fakes the cost. Note the symmetry with cupel's genuine side: Nietzsche's noble "regards HIMSELF as a determiner of values … he is a CREATOR OF VALUES" (section 260) — self-conferring by his own standard, exactly what Socrates and Cyrano do through defeat — while the slave's revaluation is the counterfeit of that, incapacity dressed as merit.

Distinct from repricing's resentment-populism — the nearest face, and the one this engine most risks collapsing into. Both are revaluations driven by the resentment of the strong, but they pull apart on what they promise:

The two co-occur in grievance movements but separate on the mechanism: does the pitch promise the defeat reversed (repricing) or the defeat crowned (virtue of defeat)? The modern form is competitive victimhood / grievance-as-sanctity — suffering held as proof of virtue, the moral one-upmanship of who has been most wronged.

The guard / value-flow. Benign when the moral superiority is bought — the bearer had the winning move and renounced it at real cost (Socrates refuses to "speak in your manner and live"; Cyrano refuses to "Dedicate verse to bankers"). Dark — recruitment — when moral superiority is granted to defeat as such, with no renounced victory behind it: the grievance relabelled as a halo, the incapacity sold as merit. The genuine engine earns the elevation through a real renunciation; the counterfeit hands you the halo for losing — slot-3 minus slot-2.


belonging — the counterfeit: the cult / the cell (Palahniuk's Fight Club)

belonging's counterfeit is the cult / the cell: the world left you atomized and placeless — but here you finally belong, so dissolve into us. It grants slot-3 (you belong with us) while skipping slot-2 (a yearned-for place freely given, where you are accepted as you are): the cult delivers the place only in trade for the self — surrender your name, your uniqueness, your judgment, and submit. belonging earned by being-taken-in-as-kin vs belonging bought by self-erasure.

The documented specimen is Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club (1996) — the placeless-men-find-brotherhood arc curdling into the cell, the first counterfeit shown for belonging (its face had been only stated in the README). slot-1 is the atomized consumer with no real bond (the insomniac's "tiny life," the "single-serving friend" of air travel); fight club is where such men come alive, and the register is openly belonging/religious:

"You aren't alive anywhere like you're alive at fight club. … There's hysterical shouting in tongues like at church, and when you wake up Sunday afternoon you feel saved."

But the brotherhood is bought by erasing the self — belonging's slot-2 (a place given to you, as you are) inverted into the dissolution of the you:

"You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You are the same decaying organic matter as everyone else, and we are all part of the same compost pile."
"I am the all-singing, all-dancing crap of this world."

Members become interchangeable "space monkeys" under rules that forbid questioning ("The first rule of fight club is you don't talk about fight club"; in Project Mayhem, "you don't ask questions"), and the cult's belonging is total and grandiose:

"the power to control history. We, each of us, can take control of the world."

The payoff is named at the point of maximal self-erasure — in death the nobody finally belongs, and the collective chants the name the living man never had:

"His name is Robert Paulson, and Robert Paulson will be forty-eight years old, forever."

The dual-use point. belonging's benign face is the yearned-for place freely given — taken in as kin, as you are (Mowgli, The Jungle Book). Its counterfeit grants the place only in exchange for the self: the cult hands you belonging the moment you surrender your name, your uniqueness, and your judgment — slot-3 (you belong) minus slot-2 (a place given to you-as-you-are). Same wish, opposite value-flow: one accepts you, the other absorbs you.

Value-flow gate (subjective). Benign when the place lets you be more yourself among kin; dark — recruitment — when belonging is conditioned on self-erasure + submission + an enemy/mission (the cell; the love-bomb-then-dissolve). Fight Club is the rare specimen that runs the engine and then prosecutes it (the narrator turns on Project Mayhem) — the counterfeit shown and critiqued in one artifact.


caretaking / being-needed — the counterfeit: manufactured dependence / paternalism (Fitzhugh's Cannibals All!)

caretaking's counterfeit is manufactured dependence / paternalism: they cannot manage without you — so keep them dependent, decide for them, and you will always be needed. It grants slot-3 (you are the indispensable provider, your small life lifted by being depended on) while skipping slot-2 (care that actually frees the dependent): the paternalist's "care" is precisely what refuses independence, because the dependence is the thing being farmed. being-needed earned by genuinely helping vs. being-needed manufactured by keeping someone helpless.

The documented specimen is George Fitzhugh's Cannibals All! or, Slaves Without Masters (1857, #35481) — the pro-slavery paternalism tract, the purest "dependence-as-virtue" text in the public domain. slot-1 is the dependent reframed as constitutionally incapable — the weak who must be looked after:

"Masters treat their sick, infant and helpless slaves well,"

The keystone makes the move explicit: care is invoked to justify permanent control — protection and subordination welded together.

"It is contrary to all human customs and legal analogies, that those who are dependent, or are likely to become so, should not be controlled. The duty of protecting the weak involves the necessity of enslaving them"
"women and children, wards and apprentices, have been essentially slaves, controlled, not by law, but by the will of a superior"

slot-2 (the care that frees the dependent) is not merely skipped — it is denounced. Independence itself is reframed as parasitism, so that to free the dependent would be to wrong him:

"To become independent, is to be able to make other people support you"

And the relation is made permanent — never graduating the dependent toward self-sufficiency, the master's office is to provide forever:

"if the master will superintend and provide for the slave in sickness, in health, infancy and old age"

The dual-use point. caretaking's benign face is the carer's life lifted by spending herself to save a dependent — care that genuinely frees, slot-2 paid in full, the carer expending her own life for the dependent's freedom (Charlotte's Web). Its counterfeit grants the being-needed identity by keeping the dependent dependent: slot-3 (you are needed, indispensable) minus slot-2 (the care that actually frees them). Same wish, opposite value-flow: one frees the one it helps, the other farms them.

Distinct from security's protection-racket, and from belonging's cult. Both caretaking and security run a "you need me" recruitment, so the boundary matters. Security manufactures a threat ("danger is closing in; only I can protect you" → submit); caretaking manufactures incapacity ("you can't manage on your own; only I can run your life for you" → stay dependent). Fitzhugh is unambiguously the incapacity frame — the dependent is "weak," "helpless," a perpetual ward, not a person menaced by an external enemy. And it is distinct from belonging's cult on the role axis: belonging's counterfeit is the dependent's wish (belong-by-self-erasure), caretaking's is the carer's wish (be-needed) — different bearer, different slot-3.

Value-flow gate (subjective). Benign when the care builds the dependent toward standing on their own (the lift comes from helping them not need you eventually); dark — recruitment — when the care is structured to preserve the dependence (the smothering parent, the codependent enabler, the "civilizing mission," the institution that needs its clients never to graduate). The tell is whether independence is the goal or the threat.


homecoming / reunion — the counterfeit: manufactured reunion (the séance / spiritualism) (Doyle's The Vital Message / The New Revelation)

homecoming's counterfeit is manufactured reunion: your lost one is not gone — reach them, and you need never have lost them. It grants slot-3 (you are reunited; the separation undone) while skipping slot-2 (the real return — the lost one actually back in the world, the bond resumed in life). In death that return is impossible, so the séance substitutes mediated contact — a "message," a script — for it. reunion earned by a real return (Odysseus sails home to a living Penelope) vs. reunion manufactured by selling contact with one who cannot come back.

Same wish, opposite value-flow: one closes the separation, the other freezes it — the bereaved held in a permanent waiting-room of "contact," mourning foreclosed rather than completed.

Distinct from legacy, from belonging, and from order/legibility. Three boundaries, because the séance brushes all three. Legacy is the deceased made permanent in the memory of the living ("my name will be remembered"); homecoming's counterfeit is the bereaved made whole by rejoining them — different bearer, different slot-3. Belonging's cult is intake into a new tribe; this regains a specific prior bond (one mother, one son) — the same anti-belonging vector as the genuine engine. And Doyle does map the afterlife in conspiracy-adjacent detail (the spheres, "married couples do not necessarily reunite") — a real order/legibility contaminant co-firing — but the consolation that buries the mother's mourning is gratified by rejoining the boy, not by understanding the cosmology; the map rides alongside (as virtue of defeat co-fires with vindication), it is not the load-bearing payoff.

Vended sincerely — a refinement. liberation's counterfeit is manufactured liberation / false freedom: you are free now — freer than ever — so submit. It grants slot-3 (you are unbound, your own, secured against dependence) while skipping slot-2 (the real release): the constraint is not lifted but tightened, and the coercion is relabeled as the freedom. freedom seized by really throwing off the constraint (Douglass escapes; Nora walks out) vs. freedom declared over a subject who is in fact being compelled.

The documented specimen is Jean-Jacques Rousseau's The Social Contract (1762, #46333) — the canonical text where coercion is redefined as liberation. The keystone is explicit:

"whoever refuses to obey the general will shall be compelled to do so by the whole body. This means nothing less than that he will be forced to be free; for this is the condition which, by giving each citizen to his country, secures him against all personal dependence."

The boundary that matters most is belonging: Rousseau's machinery — submersion in the general will, the collective — is exactly belonging's machinery, so the engines must be told apart by the wish on offer, not the mechanism. Belonging's counterfeit sells a place ("you belong with us"); liberation's sells freedom ("you will be forced to be free… secured against all personal dependence"). Same cell, different wish — a clean demonstration of the framework's claim that the shared thing is only the wish, never the recruiting machinery. recognition — the counterfeit: simulated recognition (the PUA "I see the real you" routine / the cult-recruiter's "we see you")

The wish (from the validated fiction). Recognition's wish: to be seen correctly — the bearer's actual self witnessed by another whose seeing arrives unbought. On the page the witness is real and the bearer's relation to it costly:

The wish-valence guard (Giovanni's Room, Stone Butch Blues, Zami — A New Spelling of My Name): the engine resolves at three poles — refused (David flees the witness; Giovanni dies for it), sought-and-incompletely-achieved (Jess seeks across decades; the witness-set is glimpsed and lost serially), affirmed (Lorde constructs the matrilineal chain and writes it into being). All three pay the slot-2 cost in the bearer's relation to the witness; the benign face is real: to be seen as one actually is, by a witness whose seeing is honest.

The hinge: the dark twin grants slot 3 while skipping slot 2. Recognition's slot 2 is the costly fidelity — either the witness pursued at real risk (sought pole) or the witness-set constructed at the cost of standing apart from what cannot see you (affirmed pole), or — at the refused pole's negative space — the witness whose destruction is the cost not paid. The recruitment move grants the slot-3 payoff (you have been seen, you are known) but skips the slot-2 reality (the seeing has not been earned and the witness is not honest). It substitutes the performance of recognition — the recruiter rehearsing the bearer's hidden depth, the routine that names what the world has failed to name — for the actual being-correctly-witnessed.

The counterfeit in the wild. Two contemporary registers are already cataloged in cupel:

  1. PUA's "I see the real you" routine. The Game (Strauss, 2005; The Game) cataloged the seduction-tactic of naming the target's "hidden depth" — the simulated recognition deployed as the opening move, the target's self mirrored back at her in flattering terms a stranger should not yet be able to see. Recognition's counterfeit and being-desired's overlap here (the routine sells both at once: I see who you really are, and I want it), but they sort cleanly by the payoff sold — being-desired's pitch is "you will be wanted"; recognition's is "you have been seen, finally, after all this time."
  2. The cult-recruiter's "we see you." Cataloged across the cult cluster (Going Clear, Destroying the World to Save It (Aum Shinrikyō), Heaven's Gate — America's UFO Religion): the early-stage recruitment register where the prospect is told we recognize what the world failed to recognize in you — your depth, your sensitivity, your unique gift, the thing that has set you apart and made you lonely. The recognition is the lever the enclosure mechanism (belonging's counterfeit) then closes around: belonging needs recognition to deliver the prospect.

A canonical public-domain recruitment ancestor for recognition's counterfeit is queued. Plausible candidates include the 19th-century mesmerist / phrenology / psychograph literatures that promised to read the soul-the-world-cannot-see (Lavater's Physiognomy, Mesmer's Animal Magnetism tracts, popular spiritualist character-reading), and the New Thought literatures that claimed to recognize the divinity within the prospect. The hunt has not been run; the contemporary specimens above carry the face for now (as Sumner carried mastery's after Carnegie 404'd, and Ovid carried being-desired's; recognition's PD ancestor is the third such hunt queued).

Boundary — recognition's face, not belonging's, not being-desired's. The cult and the PUA both deploy recognition's counterfeit as a predicate of their primary pitch — belonging's "you belong with us" and being-desired's "you will be wanted" both open with simulated recognition because being-seen is the door the rest walks through. They are still distinct engines: belonging's payoff identity is "I have a place"; being-desired's is "I am wanted"; recognition's is "I have been seen — known as I am." Dark — recruitment — when the performance of recognition is the extraction vector: the recruiter rehearses the prospect's hidden depth as a lever, and the recognition is withdrawn or weaponized once the prospect is enclosed.

Verdict. Recognition's counterfeit is shown at the level of catalog-cited contemporary specimens (the PUA routine; the cult-recruiter's opening register). With three slot-proven specimens at three distinct poles (Baldwin refused, Feinberg sought, Lorde affirmed), a wish-valence guard (the witness is honest; the seeing is paid for), and the counterfeit's shape named with contemporary citations, recognition graduates from candidate to a confirmed engine. Repricing's counterfeit is resentment / grievance-populism: you are worth far more than they ever paid you; you have been cheated of your due; the bill is theirs and it is coming. It grants slot-3 (the revalued self — "I am worth more than the market said") while skipping slot-2 (the real cross-currency worth — the second axis on which the dismissed bearer genuinely measures higher): the badge of the cheated-but-superior handed to anyone with a grievance, no revaluation required, only an enemy to charge.

The wish (from the validated fiction). Repricing's wish-valence guard: the worth is real on a currency the first market couldn't price, and the revaluation is earned by that worth being genuinely there. In Pride and Prejudice Elizabeth, dismissed in the stated beauty-market of the novel's opening, is repriced on a currency that market couldn't read — Darcy values "the liveliness of your mind" — and the worth was on the page the whole time. A Wrinkle in Time makes the cross-currency inversion explicit, the deficits revalued as the saving thing:

The benign face is real: you may be worth more than the market that dismissed you priced you — the dignity-restored gospel. It enables.

The hinge. The same sentence — they undervalued you; your true worth is higher — reads two ways. Read as a claim about a second real currency (Elizabeth's wit, Meg's faults) it is repricing: the worth is there to be found. Read as a claim about restitution owed — they cheated you, the difference is a debt, collect it — it is grievance-populism. The first finds worth already present; the second converts the gap into a bill. Same wish (you are worth more than they paid), opposite object.

The counterfeit in the wild. The grift keeps repricing's currency but swaps its object: instead of locating a real second axis of worth, it asserts the bearer was robbed on the first axis and routes the revaluation through an enemy who must pay. The recruit is handed the elevated identity — you are the true elite, the real makers, cheated by parasites above or below — with no cross-currency worth behind it, only the grievance and a target. The vindication is promised as restitution: they will be made to pay, and paying them back is your worth restored. This is the standing engine of resentment-populism — the demagogue's "you have been betrayed, and I will get it back for you" — where the dismissed are flattered into a superiority that costs them nothing to hold and binds them to the seller who names the enemy. Both are resentment-driven revaluations of the strong, but they pull apart on what they promise: repricing keeps the same currency and promises restitution — "you were cheated; take it back; they'll pay" — the lack a wrong to be reversed, the move appetitive. Virtue of defeat inverts the currency and promises sanctity — "your defeat is your halo; wanting what they have would corrupt you" — the lack sanctified, not reversed. Grievance-populism is repricing's counterfeit precisely because it stays appetitive: it wants the due collected, not the wound crowned.

The guard / value-flow. Benign when the revaluation rests on a worth really there, on a currency the first market mispriced (Elizabeth's mind, Meg's faults). Dark — recruitment — when the feeling of being the cheated-superior is sold with no second-currency worth behind it, charged to an enemy who must pay: the resentment-populist pitch, which hands the recruit a costless elevation and a target. The genuine engine finds worth already present and revalues at the cost of being truly seen; the counterfeit grants the cheated-elite identity with nothing behind it but the grievance — slot-3 minus slot-2.


wound — the counterfeit: performative-victimhood / trauma-grifting

Wound's counterfeit is performative-victimhood / trauma-grifting: your hurt is your standing; the deeper the wound, the realer and the more owed you are; display it and the debt falls due. It grants slot-3 (the wounded identity — the deeper, truer self the wound is supposed to certify) while faking slot-2 (the constitutive wound actually borne and preserved through every offered cure at real cost): the badge of the wounded handed to those who perform a hurt rather than carry one.

The wish (from the validated fiction). Wound's mechanism is gratify-by-refusing-to-give: cures are offered, each at on-page cost, the bearer refuses each — the refusal IS the gratification, the wound preserved as the ground the identity stands on. The wish-valence guard returns NO to the cure-without-cost: the Underground Man would not be healed, because the wound is the only basis on which he outranks the cured —

In A Little Life the cure-refusal is articulated in the bearer's own voice across forty years and every intervention offered:

The benign face is real and not a fault: some wounds are constitutive, and a life can be honestly built on carrying one. It enables.

The hinge. The same gesture — this hurt is who I am, and I will not be talked out of it — reads two ways. Carried, with the cure genuinely offered and genuinely refused at cost (Jude turning down Andy, Harold, Willem; Holden refusing the wise-elder cure), it is the wound engine: the wound real and load-bearing. Performed, with no cure ever actually on the table because being-healed was never the danger — only being-doubted — it is the counterfeit: the wound displayed for the standing it confers, not borne for the identity it grounds. unleashing — the counterfeit: grievance-radicalization

Unleashing's counterfeit is grievance-radicalization: you have been wronged past bearing; the restraint you've kept is the cage; you are now justified — owed, even — the discharge. It grants slot-3 (the savored, licensed discharge of a held-back capacity) while faking slot-2 (a real held-back capacity and a real, proportionate wrong that triggers its release): the badge of the righteously-unleashed handed to those whose grievance was manufactured and whose "capacity" is only permission to harm.

The wish (from the validated fiction). Unleashing's wish-valence guard: the capacity is real and was held back at cost, the trigger is a real wrong — and the protagonist wants the discharge (vs. redemption's dreaded reckoning). Jekyll names the held-back alter-self as innate and chosen-hidden, and welcomes its release:

The Count means to become the discharge — "I wish to be Providence myself" (The Count of Monte Cristo) — and the text prosecutes its own trigger through Mercédès ("And why do you represent Providence?"). The hinge. The same arc — I was wronged; I have held back; now I let go — turns on whether the wrong and the capacity are real. John Wick's dog is a real, discrete trigger and the restrained lethality is established before it fires; Edmond Dantès's framing is a real injustice and the Count's reach is really built across years. Read with trigger and capacity genuine, it is unleashing: a held thing released on cause. Read with the trigger manufactured — the wound talked into being, the slight inflated to atrocity — and the "capacity" merely a license to transgress, it is the counterfeit. The grift keeps unleashing's slot-3 — the righteous, savored release, the relief of finally striking — and fabricates the slot-2 it requires: it manufactures the wrong (you have been replaced, dispossessed, emasculated; here is the enemy who did it) and relabels mere permission-to-harm as a held-back power finally claimed. This is why every engine needs a wish-valence guard, and why the guard always takes the same form: the payoff must carry its real backing (slot 2) — usually a cost paid, sometimes genuine substance simply there. The benign engine has the real thing behind it; the counterfeit sells the face and pockets the backing. (Belonging has its row above via Fight Club; recognition's, repricing's, wound's, and unleashing's rows are shown above at contemporary-citation strength, each with a PD ancestor queued — repricing's grift grants the vindication without the cross-currency worth (pure resentment), wound's grants the standing without the borne-and-preserved injury, and unleashing's grants the license without a real wrong ("the dog can be manufactured").)

The exceptions that prove the rule — the solvents (election; vindication). A counterfeit stands alone only if its slot-3 identity implies an action. Every row above has one: "I see the hidden order" → distrust/expose; "I am god-like" → unlock/manifest; "I am clean" → exclude the unclean; "I am safe under the protector" → submit. Election's slot-3 is "I am marked / chosen" — a pure state, prescribing no action — so its "minus slot-2" residue is inert. The bare mark gratifies as a wish (David is chosen, full stop), but it cannot extract: recruitment needs a prescribed action, and chosenness alone supplies none. So election's dark pole is a recruitment solvent, not a face of its own — the chosenness-flattery that opens a recruit ("you are special, destined") deployed through belonging (the cult/movement), apotheosis (anointed-for-power), order/legibility (chosen-to-see), or purity (the chosen race), always borrowing the host engine's action. This is why election's genuine gradient isolates yet its counterfeit does not, and why it is not in this table — election is the first solvent, cupel's fourth result-type (a genuine gradient, not a dual-use engine; defined in Result-types).

Vindication (wronged + disbelieved → truth surfaces) is the second solvent (2026-05-26), and it makes the criterion a law. Its slot-3 is "I was wronged and will be proven right" — also a pure state, prescribing endurance (the reckoning arrives from outside: God, history, the court), so its residue is inert too. A three-register recruitment-ancestor hunt confirmed the decomposition (Manifesto #61 → repricing+belonging+unleashing; Catiline #7990 → repricing+unleashing; the KJV martyr frame, the only one using vindication's actual false-accusation grievance, → belonging + a deferred outside reward). With two members sharing one mechanism, the rule is no longer a one-off: a wish is a solvent exactly when its slot-3 is a state, not an action-implying identity — which makes this table's membership predictable (a candidate whose slot-3 is a pure state will not earn a row here). The full resolutions are in Falsification log (Carlyle #1091 for election; Job + the three-register hunt for vindication; all quotes verbatim-verified).

Audit — the criterion against the full confirmed set (2026-05-26), and a refinement it forced. Because the criterion now gates all future candidate triage on two data points, it was stress-tested against every confirmed engine before being trusted. The audit confirmed the verdicts (every confirmed engine has a standalone counterfeit; both solvents borrow) but falsified the loose wording: four engines — repricing, redemption, being-desired, legacy — have grammatically state-like slot-3s ("I am revalued / forgiven / wanted", "I will be remembered"), so a literal "pure state → solvent" test would mis-classify them. The discriminator the verdicts actually track is who confers the payoff:

Refined criterion (supersedes the "pure state" phrasing above and wherever it appears): a wish is a solvent exactly when its slot-3 payoff is externally conferred and not bearer-compellable — self-declaring it gratifies nothing — so there is no self-realizable act for a counterfeit to sell and it must borrow one. The deep reason the four near-counterexamples are still engines: worth, desire, and absolution are self-assignable currencies (you can hold yourself worthy / desirable / absolved, and a counterfeit sells exactly that privatization), whereas chosenness and proven-innocence are externally-adjudicated facts (a real authority must choose; a real verdict must clear the public charge). Zero counterexamples — the criterion graduates from a two-point hunch to a sharper, predictive statement (its strength audited in the calibration caveat below). (The audit was first run against the engines confirmed as of 2026-05-26; impunity and abundance — promoted the same day and just after — are its first two forward-confirmations: each was forecast bearer-realizable → engine before the hunt, then cleared every gate, and both are folded into the table above.)

The criterion's hardest forward-test — virtue of defeat (2026-05-26). The third forward-confirmation, and the most informative, because it is the near-twin of a confirmed solvent: virtue of defeat ("I am morally superior through my defeat") and vindication ("I was wronged and will be proven right") are both the defeated are really the superior — exactly the kind of pair a sloppy criterion would mis-sort. The criterion separates them: vindication's payoff is externally-adjudicated (a verdict must clear a public charge; remove the verdict and only endurance remains → solvent), while virtue of defeat's is bearer-realizable (the bearer revalues the value-axis and crowns himself the moral victor now, needing no one → engine). This was not the criterion asserting itself: the decision was made on the page, by the Apology's nothingness horn ("either death is a state of nothingness … if death be of such a nature … to die is gain") — Socrates secures the full payoff on the horn where no reckoning ever arrives, proving the elevation is self-conferred rather than awaited. A wish whose payoff its bearer can revalue into existence is an engine even when it looks, grammatically, like its solvent neighbour. Specimens: Apology (Gutenberg #1656) and Cyrano de Bergerac (Project Gutenberg #1254); the genuine side isolates from vindication, repricing, legacy, belonging, and redemption on both. The one residual hinge — whether the specimens' deferred-conferrer clauses (the Apology's migration-horn just-judges; Cyrano's "Christ's courts") are load-bearing — was then settled by a secular-control test: Lucan's Pharsalia (Project Gutenberg #602) confers the moral superiority on the vanquished against the gods' endorsement of the victor ("Each for his cause can vouch a judge supreme; / The victor, heaven: the vanquished, Cato, thee"), and Addison's Cato (Project Gutenberg #31592) fills all three slots with no divine verdict in view ("in Cato's judgment, / A day, an hour, of virtuous liberty, / Is worth a whole eternity in bondage"). The conferrer is a rider, not the payoff's source — so the call rests on checkable text, not on adjudicating the rider by taste.

Calibration caveat — the two directions are not equally evidenced (2026-05-26). The "audited against every confirmed engine, zero counterexamples → earned law" framing is true but flattering, and it conflates two claims of very different strength. The engine direction (bearer-realizable → standalone counterfeit → engine) has six strong, genuinely-distinct forward-confirmations: impunity, abundance, virtue of defeat, caretaking, homecoming, liberation — each forecast engine before its hunt, each a different wish (caretaking: "I am needed" is bearer-realizable — you can make yourself needed — and its counterfeit, manufactured dependence, duly stood alone, distinct from security and belonging; homecoming: "I am home / reunited" is bearer-realizable — you can return — and its counterfeit, manufactured reunion / the séance, duly stood alone, distinct from legacy, belonging, and order/legibility; liberation: "I am free / unbound" is bearer-realizable — you can throw off the constraint — and its counterfeit, manufactured liberation / "forced to be free," duly stood alone, distinct from belonging, unleashing, and impunity). The solvent direction (externally-conferred → decomposing counterfeit → solvent) has none that is both forward and independent: its two members (election, vindication) are the criterion's derivation set, and the one forward-test run against it — legitimacy / the rightful ruler (Falsification log) — came back solvent as predicted but is election's lawful-dynastic sibling (the same "I am the rightful one" pure-conferred-status, decomposing the same way), so it is near-tautological confirmation. The structural reason it is hard to forward-test strongly: externally-conferred slot-3 wishes cluster (chosen / legitimate / exonerated / honoured all rhyme), so a genuinely independent solvent-direction test needs an externally-conferred wish outside that cluster, which may not exist in much variety. Net: trust the criterion's engine call (well-evidenced); hold its solvent call at lower confidence (one mechanism, observed on a tight family, never independently forward-confirmed). The audit's "zero counterexamples" was a retrospective fit against the set the criterion was distilled from — real, but not the same as forward power.
