The canonical reference for cupel's working vocabulary.
The discipline: this doc lists what survives. Anything not here gets rewritten in plain prose where it appears. The point is to prune, not to relabel inflation.
When adding a new term, the bar: name the distinct work the term does that plain prose can't. If the term is just compressing two existing words into a hyphenated form (X-register ≈ "in the X mode of"), prefer the prose.
1. Foundation — the engine substrate
engine. A wish-fulfillment mechanism with three slots. cupel's unit of analysis. The twenty confirmed engines: mastery, apotheosis, belonging, being-desired, redemption, order/legibility, impunity, purity, security, liberation/autonomy, caretaking/being-needed, repricing, legacy, abundance, virtue of defeat, homecoming/reunion, unleashing, the double life, wound, recognition. Each is defined with its slots, wish-valence guard, specimens, and counterfeit on its /engines/<slug>/ page.
wound class. The catalog's first gratify-by-refusing-to-give axis. The protagonist carries a constitutive wound; slot-3 is preserving the wound through every cure offered. The wound stays the bearer's, which produces a class-level consumption-deficit. Four branches by the wound's origin: self-administered (the Underground Man), witnessed (Holden's Allie-wound), received (Jude's history), received-then-preserved (Frollo's obsession; Humbert's Annabel-prototype). Discrimination guard: would the bearer accept cure-without-cost? Yes → wound-as-backstory (engine is something else); no → wound candidate.
bead. The work-card's concentrated distillation. What cupellation leaves after the dross is burned off — the metallurgical metaphor the project name (cupel) draws from. Opens every work card's ## The reading section as a single paragraph naming the work's spine: setting, engines, and payoff. The catalog is the running record of beads extracted.
slot 1. The condition the engine addresses — the lack, the unmet need, the indebted state. For mastery: the unskilled condition. For redemption: the real debt.
slot 2. The mechanism that pays the cost — the substantive work that earns the slot-3 payoff. For mastery: actual practice over time. For redemption: the costly atonement actually made.
slot 3. The payout — the wish delivered. For mastery: standing capacity. For redemption: forgiven / clean.
counterfeit. Slot 3 claimed without slot 2 paid. The engine's payout delivered (or appearing to be delivered) without the substantive cost. The cupel's central diagnostic move: identify the slot-2-counterfeit and you've identified the work's load-bearing dishonesty.
slot-2 deficit. The specific gap where slot 2 is missing or faked. Naming the deficit precisely is the discipline that separates a slot-test from a vibe judgment.
texture (vs engine). What a work delivers as supply-side experience, distinct from the wish the audience consumes the work for. Awe, wonder, the sublime, spectacle, dread, suspense — all textures, not engines. A texture rides along on whichever engine actually drives consumption: awe in Jurassic Park rides on order/legibility-antagonist-mode (the deep-past rendered legible); spectacle in Avatar rides on belonging (the Na'vi tribe); suspense in thrillers rides on whichever wish the bearer is pursuing. The demand-side test is the discriminator: an engine is what people consume the work for (a wish about their life); texture is what the work delivers as (an experience cultivated). Awe-rich content is sought at niche scale by people who seek the cultivation; engines drive mass consumption. Apply when a slot-test feels coerced: if the slot you're tagging is the work's texture rather than the wish driving its en-masse consumption, you're confusing texture for engine. Worked example in Jurassic Park.
wish-valence guard. The rule that bars the shortcut: the payoff must carry its real backing (slot 2), and the protagonist must actually want what the engine delivers. The guard rejects specimens that fill the bare slots but route a different wish (Scrooge fills unleashing's slots but is redemption — his trigger is a dreaded reckoning, not a welcomed license). Load-bearing across the falsification log; the bearer-realizable line is the wish-valence guard's general form (a wish has a counterfeit when its payoff is bearer-realizable; lacks one when externally-adjudicated). Per Falsification log. Structural substrate (The interpreter and the engines): the guard is the interpreter-coherence test — would the bearer's left-hemisphere-interpreter self-story survive the wish being granted? Wound bearers fail it (the wound IS the load-bearing structure); not-wound trauma specimens (Moshfegh, Machado, Norwegian Wood, Maus) pass it (the interpreter has built an alternative coherence the wound's resolution is compatible with). This is why the guard is binding, not just that it is.
2. Slot-test outcomes — what a candidate engine resolves to
When an engine is slot-tested, it resolves into one of these categories. Documented in the README and Falsification log.
confirmed. The candidate cleared every gate: a clean specimen checked against the page, a wish-valence guard, and a distinct counterfeit shown. Joins the engine table.
candidate. Promising — a clean specimen may exist, but at least one gate (guard, counterfeit, isolation from neighbors) is not yet closed. Tracked in Falsification log.
composite. The candidate's wish decomposes into existing engines, so it is not its own engine. Fame = being-desired + repricing.
solvent. A real wish whose counterfeit dissolves into other engines, so it is named honestly yet kept out of the engine table. The shared shape: an externally-adjudicated verdict the bearer cannot self-confer. Election (chosen), vindication (proven-right), justice/comeuppance (desert-served). The bearer-realizable line is the rule.
vehicle. Not a wish but a delivery device — transport carries you to a new world, transformation is the crucible by which other engines render their payoff. Catalogued for clarity but not a tag.
Specimen-resolution result-types (i)/(ii)/(iii)/(iv) + split-result + scaffold. A second resolution layer below engine-resolution: when a specific work is slot-tested against the confirmed engine set, it resolves to one of these. (i) engine-present-run-dark-still-delivered; (ii) engine-shape-present-in-character-run-to-expose; (iii) no-engine-isolates; (iv) engine-of-a-kind-the-catalog-wasn't-reading (the surfacing-case for new candidate engines). split-result = character-engine layer fills cleanly while reader-engine layer remains a resister OR runs a consumption-counterfeit at a different engine (Lolita post-2026-06-05). scaffold = the work distributes engine-bundle elements across multiple bearers rather than co-locating them in one bearer; the bundle is not a unitary cluster but a recurring structural element-set that hosts different engines in different works (Hugo's Notre-Dame for the masked-vigilante scaffold). Full treatment + decision tree at Result-types.
content-layer ↔ consumption-layer. The on-page material an engine runs on vs the audience-pose consuming the work. Distinct readings of the same text. Lolita runs wound substantively at the content-layer (Humbert as bearer) and unleashing-counterfeit at the consumption-layer (prurient-reader-mode). The wound class's reader-engine dual-use signature is the canonical case.
character-engine layer ↔ reader-engine layer. A finer-grained restatement of content-layer / consumption-layer, used when a single work runs engines at both layers and they need to be tracked separately (Gravity's Rainbow runs wound at the character-engine layer via Slothrop and order/legibility-antagonist-mode at the reader-engine layer via the novel's form). Reader-engine = the engine running at the consumption-layer; audience-pose = the actor's stance through which that engine is inhabited. The two are related but distinct: the reader-engine names what mechanism runs; the audience-pose names how the reader takes it up.
consumption-counterfeit. A counterfeit running at the consumption-layer rather than at the content-layer. The audience-pose engine the work supplies as substitute when the content-layer engine cannot be transmitted directly. The wound class's class-level dual-use signature — every wound specimen carries a consumption-counterfeit at a different engine because the wound's gratify-by-refusing-to-give axis creates a consumption-deficit (the audience cannot share the bearer's wound) that a neighboring engine's counterfeit-shape fills based on the work's surface texture.
engine-transmission routes. The structural account of how an engine reaches the audience-pose, generalizing the wound class-finding. The impunity engine surfaces three routes: route 1 (cult-text frame-only → vindication-solvent substitution; the audience cannot inhabit the bearer's slot-3), route 2 (non-fictional bearer-realizable tactics → engine direct; the audience operationally inhabits), route 3 (fictional worldbuilding-real → engine via POV-inhabitation while reading; four sub-variants A invulnerability / B gadget-training / C consequence-reversibility / D mutation-hybridity). Routes 1 + 2 can run co-loaded at the same engine-position (Kiyosaki RDPD — both frame-vindication and bearer-realizable-tactics simultaneously; partitions cluster-internal structure rather than just classifying specimens). The general principle: transmission depends on whether the audience-pose can structurally inhabit the engine's slot-3; engines whose slot-3 is bearer-specific (wound) cannot transmit directly and substitute a neighboring engine or solvent.
3. Specimen grades — what "we know" about a work
These are evidence levels, listed weakest to strongest. Used in card frontmatter (backing:).
wikipedia-grounded. Claims about the work derived from secondary sources (Wikipedia, reviews, critical literature). No primary-text verification. The lowest grade above pure assertion. Honest about its limits.
~ reviewed. Light-engagement card. Claims about engines / cluster placement made on the basis of reading the work generally, without verbatim slot-anchoring. Faster than slot-proven; suitable for triage; not durable for theoretical load-bearing.
slot-proven. Verbatim quotes from the primary text confirm that slots 1 / 2 / 3 of each claimed engine fill. The discipline-anchored grade. The works/ directory holds all work cards; each card's frontmatter backing field marks it as slot-proven (carries a verbatim-cited ## The evidence section) or reviewed (lighter card without the evidence section).
canonical text. A work that defines the cluster — the founder-canon specimen against which derivatives are read. Carnegie 1936 for self-help, Thiel 2014 for startup-canon pure-counterfeit, Hubbard 1950 for cult.
4. Bundle — the positive-pole co-occurrence
bundle. A co-occurrence of two-or-more engines running enabling in a recognizable cultural formation. The positive-pole counterpart of the counterfeit cluster. The romance bundle runs being-desired + abundance + a powerful partner (Twilight, ACOTAR, A Little Princess is the abundance-spine version). The quest bundle runs mastery + belonging + the heroic-deed register. The bearing-witness bundle runs virtue-of-defeat + the-double-life-of-the-witness-once-removed + care-for-the-record (Spiegelman's Maus, Machado's In the Dream House) — the dark-bundle specimen for testimony-at-the-archival register. The reckoning-without-redemption bundle (Robinson's Lila) is another dark-bundle named specimen. Full catalog in Bundle-shape catalog.
Distinct from cluster: a cluster runs counterfeit, a bundle runs enabling. Distinct from composite: a composite is a single wish that decomposes into engines; a bundle is multiple wishes co-occurring.
bright bundle ↔ dark bundle. The valence dimension within the bundle catalog (per dimension 3 of the pole-dimension list below). Bright-bundle wish-fulfillment (the romance bundle, the quest bundle) vs dark-bundle (the reckoning-without-redemption bundle).
5. Cluster — the unit above engine
counterfeit cluster. A co-occurrence of two-or-more engines running counterfeit in a self-reinforcing structural shape that recurs as a recognizable cultural formation. Distinct from a bundle (positive-pole co-occurrence) and from a single-engine counterfeit (one engine running falsely in isolation). The mutual-reinforcement structure is what makes the cluster harder to dissolve than any single counterfeit-leg.
leg (of a cluster). An engine that the cluster runs. Written as X-leg where X is a named engine: mastery-leg, apotheosis-leg, impunity-leg, order/legibility-leg. Load-bearing because the cluster catalog tracks which legs each cluster has and how they reinforce. Do not use X-leg outside this cluster-component sense.
N-leg (count compound). Written as N-leg where N is the count: four-leg specimen (a work running four cluster legs), six-leg cluster, seven-leg compound. Compact shorthand for "fills N legs"; load-bearing because the cluster-counts are a recurring axis of comparison across dossiers (cult-cluster four-leg vs Jonestown-compound seven-leg).
gravitational center. The cross-cluster repeating leg-triplet: apotheosis + impunity + order/legibility. The three legs that appear across every recruitment-cluster mapped so far. The cluster's closed-loop of recruitment: elevation justifies exemption; exemption necessary because revealed truth differs from conventional rules; elevation is evidence of the revealed truth.
primary cluster axis (three-way). Recruitment / narrative / compression. Recruitment-clusters inject the gravitational-center loop and recruit members. Narrative-clusters run story-form gravitational centers (romance-trap). Compression-clusters package a wisdom-tradition into consumption-deliverable (wisdom-tradition-compression). Different gravitational-center shapes, different signature slot-2-deficits.
compound cluster. A single specimen running two or more clusters simultaneously (NXIVM = cult ∩ self-help ∩ MLM; Jonestown = cult ∩ protected-world). Documented in Cluster catalog, the Compound clusters section.
bridge specimen. A work whose function is to pipeline readers/viewers between two clusters (e.g. wellness → alt-right; pop-philosophy → manosphere). Bridge specimens are the cluster-bridging finding's operational unit.
6. Dimensions and poles — the discipline this glossary exists to fix
"Pole" had been used as if it referred to a single fixed dimension, but multiple distinct dimensions were in play. The fix: "pole" is a useful word only when the dimension is named. Each dimension below has a name, two endpoints, and a defined scope of application.
Dimension 1 — textual-attitude (the one "pole" is reserved for)
partial-refusal ↔ pure-counterfeit. The dimension along which a canonical text positions itself toward the cluster's slot-2 deficit.
- pure-counterfeit pole. The text's load-bearing claim is the slot-2 deficit — the framework works by installing slot 3 without the slot-2 cost. Hill 1937, Thiel 2014, Hubbard 1950.
- partial-refusal pole. The text names the slot-2 deficit explicitly and proposes a substantive replacement — the technique's effectiveness depends on the slot-2 work being done honestly. Carnegie 1936 (local-principle register), Covey 1989 (structural-frame register), Ries 2011 (structural-frame register).
This is the dimension the bistable-braid finding lives on. The word "pole" in cupel dossiers, used without qualifier, refers to this dimension. Any other use must name its dimension explicitly.
Dimension 2 — value-flow (per-specimen judgment)
enabling ↔ counterfeit (the running's grade). Used in dual-use reads to grade a specimen's actual effect on the reader. Distinct from dimension 1: a partial-refusal-pole text can still run counterfeit at the consumption layer (Covey-as-MBA-shelf-identity, Ries-as-cargo-cult), and a pure-counterfeit-pole text can still be enabling for some readers (Hill as motivational scaffold).
Do not use "enabling-pole" / "counterfeit-pole" as compound forms in dossier prose. Write "the running is enabling" / "the running is counterfeit." The dimension stays useful; the compound form is fluency-noise.
Dimension 3 — bundle valence (positive-pole work)
bright ↔ dark (within the bundle catalog, Bundle-shape catalog). Applies to bundles (positive-pole co-occurrences), not clusters. Used to distinguish bright-bundle wish-fulfillment (the romance bundle, the quest bundle) from dark-bundle (the reckoning-without-redemption bundle).
This dimension is local to the bundle catalog. Outside that context, "bright pole" and "dark pole" should be rewritten in prose.
Dimensions that were used but get pruned
- prevention pole. Used in Dual-use log. Rewrite in prose: "the prevention-oriented running of the engine" or similar.
- solvent pole. Used once in Falsification log. Drop; rewrite in prose.
- running pole. Used once in Going Clear. Drop; rewrite in prose.
7. Register — when load-bearing, when not
register. A specific structural layer at which a discipline / mechanism / counterfeit operates. Examples that are load-bearing:
- local-principle register — Carnegie's flattery-vs-appreciation discipline runs inside a single principle.
- structural-frame register — Covey's Character-Ethic-vs-Personality-Ethic is the book's organizing frame; Ries's anti-mythology framing is the book's organizing claim.
- trainable-craft register — Clear's atomic-habits structure delivers as trainable practice without explicit slot-2-counterfeit naming.
- consumption-layer register — what happens when the work is read by mass audiences, distinct from the work's text-internal register.
- care-for-the-record register — caretaking running at the historical-trauma / archival-silence layer rather than dyadic-personal (Spiegelman's Maus preserving Vladek's account; Machado's In the Dream House preserving queer-domestic-abuse testimony). Distinct from caretaking-of-a-needy-other; contrasts with the absence-of-record the testimony fills. Named in Bundle-shape catalog, the bearing-witness bundle.
"Register" is load-bearing when it names a specific layer the analysis discriminates (as in the self-help cluster's three-register finding: local-principle / structural-frame / trainable-craft). It is fluency-noise when used as a generic-purpose modifier ("at the X register" where X is just the noun being analyzed; mastery-register, apotheosis-register, counterfeit-register — these collapse to "in the X mode of" and should be rewritten).
Heuristic for keeping a X-register compound: can you name the contrasting register the dimension implies? If "the apotheosis-register" doesn't have a named not-apotheosis-register on the other side, the term is doing no discriminating work.
8. Mode and sub-mode — similar discipline
mode. Used in cluster-axis terms (recruitment-mode, narrative-mode, compression-mode). Load-bearing because the cluster catalog's primary axis is three-way.
sub-mode. Load-bearing in the outside-critique dossier work — distinguishing journalist-distance / former-member-reckoning / outer-participant-rescuer sub-modes of the outside-critique-position. Three documented sub-modes, distinct discrimination work.
antagonist-mode. An engine running in opposition / refusal / deconstruction rather than enabling. The contrasting mode is the unmarked enabling-mode (engine runs to deliver the wish). Load-bearing where it names which specific engine opposes — apotheosis-antagonist-mode (Watchmen, Evangelion: the work dramatizes apotheosis-counterfeit's catastrophic success); order/legibility-antagonist-mode (Blood Meridian, Gravity's Rainbow: totalizing legibility as the work's substantive antagonism); impunity-antagonist-mode (Watchmen at the multi-bearer register). Distinct from dimension-2 value-flow (enabling ↔ counterfeit): an engine can run antagonist-mode AND be the work's enabling running, because the work earns its enabling status by the deconstruction.
Generic X-mode compound forms (god-mode, failure-mode) — rewrite in prose unless they similarly name a contrasting mode.
9. Findings — named structural results
Findings get a name when they recur enough that future work cross-references them. Each finding's full statement lives in a theory/ doc; the entry here is the one-paragraph plain-language form.
bistable-braid. Some clusters have two parallel canonical-text traditions — one running honestly (partial-refusal pole), one running as a recruitment pitch (pure-counterfeit pole) — both surviving and propagating from the same founding moment. Carnegie 1936 (honest) and Hill 1937 (counterfeit) braided the self-help cluster; Ries 2011 (honest) and Thiel 2014 (counterfeit) braided startup-canon. Full proposal: Foundational-moment bistability.
cluster-internal participant-refusal. A text inside a cluster that names what the cluster's other texts skip — the slot-2 deficit, in glossary terms — and refuses to make the same skip itself. Manson Subtle Art refuses the self-help cluster's positivity script; Brown Daring Greatly refuses its bootstrapping script; Doyle Untamed refuses its earlier-self's script. The catalog once treated this as a strong "this text is honest" signal; the Doyle slot-test refined that — sometimes the refused position is just replaced by the same engine running somewhere else in the text, not structurally refused.
cluster-external systemic-refusal. A work outside a cluster deploys the same engine the cluster runs in counterfeit form against the cluster, with falsifiable method. Distinct from outside-critique pole (a position within the cluster's pole-spectrum, taken by a text that names the cluster as religion/cult/etc.): cluster-external systemic-refusal sits adjacent to the cluster, not on its spectrum. Carreyrou Bad Blood (startup-canon-cluster engines mastery + impunity + order/legibility deployed via investigative journalism against Theranos). Documented in Bundle-shape catalog.
pole-distribution shapes. Within a cluster, the canonical texts spread across the partial-refusal ↔ pure-counterfeit dimension in one of a small set of shapes. A text can hold the same pole at every engine in the cluster (the cleanest case — DiAngelo White Fragility uniformly partial-refusal across the systemic-critique cluster's engines). A text can mix poles across engines — partial-refusal at some, pure-counterfeit at others (Kendi How to Be an Antiracist). A text can sit inside the cluster's project but refuse its own myth-temptations (Coates The Message refusing vindicationist mythology while staying anti-racist). These are the structural intermediates that fill in between bistable-braid's two endpoints.
dissolution-mechanism pattern. The closed 5-pattern typology in the cult-cluster work for how cluster-canonical instances end: demand-imposed exit, gradual departure, failed-prophecy reckoning, catastrophic collapse, scripted external-state catalysis. Load-bearing closure; per memory/keep-gates-hard-name-new-categories.
10. Conventions — small, mechanical
works/<slug>.md— one file per work; the analytical reading and (when slot-proven) the verbatim evidence both live inside it. Tier marked by the frontmatterbackingfield (slot-provenorreviewed).theory/<topic>.md— methodological / theoretical / catalog work.- In dossiers, citation parens contain only verbatim quoted spans, structural markers (Ch. N, l. N, S2E3, Speaker:), and cross-refs. No LLM-paraphrase in cite position. Per
memory/quotes-only-no-paraphrase. Enforced bycupel quotes-audit. - In-copyright sources cite bibliographically only (no "held in refs", no "verified verbatim" boilerplate). Per
memory/dossier-citation-minimal. - spine vs rider / also-runs — the role-tag a dossier assigns to each engine it identifies. Spine = the engine the work is built around; also-runs = secondary engines that fill but don't carry. Rider is a synonym for also-runs preferred in prose when the secondary engine is bundled with the spine in a recognizable formation (abundance rides on being-desired in the romance bundle). In dossier engine-list tags use also-runs; in analytical prose either is fine.
