Detransition, Baby

slot-proven Torrey Peters · 2021 · novel
Peters, Torrey. *Detransition, Baby.* One World / Random House, 2021. In-copyright; quoted briefly for analysis/criticism.

The reading

The bead. Three bearers in present-day Brooklyn: Reese, a trans woman in her mid-thirties who wants motherhood "worse than anything" (l. 152) and who frames her exclusion through the Sex and the City Problem — "no generation of trans women has ever solved" the four-option formula by which cis women find meaning in aging (l. 158-160); Ames, her ex-partner, a detransitioned trans woman now living as a man, who has accidentally impregnated his cis boss Katrina; and Katrina, who has miscarried once and is paralyzed by the uncertainty of a second pregnancy held with a partner who cannot promise to remain the same person. Ames proposes the three of them raise the baby as a family — Reese as a co-mother, Ames as a not-quite-father, Katrina as the biological mother. The novel ends on the morning of Katrina's scheduled abortion: the three sit silently over tea while Ames reframes their attempted trio as "our solution ... whatever kind of women we are" (l. 4960). Katrina says "maybe." Reese says "maybe." The engine is recognition at the sought-pole-trans-women register with the slot-3 resolved at an autonomy-suspended sub-mode.

Engines

The bundle. A recognition-spine specimen that DOES NOT close the question backings.md left open after Binnie (whether the sought pole at trans-women register admits a completion-resolved register). Peters runs the engine at a third slot-3 register entirely: autonomy-suspended. The register names a slot-3 in which:

Distinct from honest-foreclosure (Binnie, Hartman, Bechdel): there, the bearer acknowledges the wish-shape's mechanism as non-functional. Here, the mechanism is fully functional in principle; the autonomy of another bearer makes the outcome suspended.

Distinct from coerced-preservation (Butler): there, the substrate enforces preservation at the bearer's physical cost. Here, the substrate enforces nothing; the autonomy of another bearer makes the outcome contingent.

Distinct from unresolved (a wound at the lifelong-cost register, e.g. Greenwell): there, the engine is still firing without resolution. Here, the engine HAS resolved — the bearer's slot-3 act is the honoring of structural suspension as the engine's load-bearing closure.

The cross-engine register-class question opens: does autonomy-suspended slot-3 run beneath other engines? Candidates: a bearer seeking belonging where the group's autonomous choice gates admission; a bearer seeking apotheosis whose ascension depends on a community's autonomous consent; a bearer seeking legacy whose transmission depends on a descendant's autonomous reception. The register-class would name a slot-3 where the engine's completion is structurally gated by another bearer's autonomy and the slot-3 fills as the bearer's honoring of the gating. The two-specimen finding (Reese's recognition + Peters's belonging at also-runs in the same novel) is a one-specimen test of the class; needs a different-engine cross-test before claiming engine-orthogonality.

Dual-use read. Clean enabling at structural commitment. Peters's structural commitment is the refusal of either resolution the substrate would reward — neither the trio forms and saves the day completion nor the clean Binnie-style "well, that didn't work" foreclosure. The novel stops on the literal morning of the abortion appointment, with the abortion neither happening nor not-happening within the text. The reader bears the suspended slot-3 as their share of the engine's resolution. Refuses the recognition counterfeit (the conferral of womanhood via motherhood as purchase pattern) by holding Reese's wish as legitimate (she's not wrong to want what she wants) while also holding Katrina's autonomy as legitimate (Katrina is not wrong to refuse the configuration). The novel does not adjudicate between them. Value-flow: clean enabling at source.

Consumption. Peters's debut novel; Women's Prize for Fiction longlist, 2021; widely reviewed as the contemporary trans-fiction successor to Binnie's Nevada. Consumption-layer counterfeit risk: Detransition, Baby-as prestige trans literature identity purchase, the kind of acquisition where the reader takes the book as evidence of their own cultural literacy on trans issues. The work refuses this at the structural commitment by holding the trio's failure-to-form across cis/trans/detransitioned bearers — the reader cannot take the book as "trans womanhood validated" because the book's structural commitment is precisely to refusing the validation as something cleanly given.

Verdict. Recognition slot-proven at the sought-pole-trans-women register, slot-3 resolved at a previously unnamed sub-mode — autonomy-suspended. The sub-mode is distinct from honest-foreclosure (Binnie/Hartman/Bechdel) by the bearer's wish-shape being preserved rather than acknowledged-as-foreclosed, and from coerced-preservation (Butler) by the substrate enforcing nothing. The completion question Binnie left open remains open — Peters runs a third register entirely. Belonging at also-runs strength at the constructive family form collapsed before completing register; the autonomy-suspended slot-3 register-class fires for belonging too in the same specimen, suggesting cross-engine reach worth testing.

Evidence. ✓ slot-proven. Verbatim quotes drawn from the One World / Random House 2021 first edition.

The evidence

A recognition-spine specimen running at the sought pole at the trans-women register with the slot-3 resolving in the autonomy-suspended sub-mode. The bundle stakes the load-bearing finding on the structural alignment between Reese's preserved wish-shape, the substrate's preserved possibility, and the novel's refusal to render the outcome within the text.

Slot 1 — motherhood as the configuration that would confer womanhood

The slot-1 condition for recognition at this register is the bearer perceives a self the world will not correctly witness, AND the bearer has identified the substrate-configuration through which the recognition would land. The condition is established at l. 152:

"She really did want to be a mom. She wanted it worse than anything. She had spent her whole adulthood with the queers, ingesting their radical relationships and polyamory and gender roles, but somehow, she still never displaced from the pinnacle of womanhood those nice white Wisconsin moms who had populated her childhood. She never lost that secret fervor to grow up into one of them. In motherhood she could imagine herself apart from her loneliness and neediness, because as a mother, she believed, you were never truly alone."

The Sex and the City Problem names the structural exclusion (l. 158-160):

"Yet, for every generation of trans women prior to Reese's, the Sex and the City Problem was an aspirational problem. Only the rarest, most stealth, most successful of trans women ever had the chance to even confront it. The rest were barred from all four options at the outset. No jobs, no lovers, no babies, and while a trans woman might have been a muse, no one wanted art in which she spoke for herself. And so, trans women defaulted into a kind of No Futurism."

The slot-1 invariant — the bearer has identified the configuration that would land the recognition and the substrate has historically denied that configuration to her cohort — is established.

Slot 2 — Amy's detransition, the cowboy, the willingness to disappear

The slot-2 cost is paid across three escalating registers. First, the near-completion that collapsed: Reese had achieved domesticity with Amy — "the trust and boredom and stability that now had the faded aspect of a dream recalled right after you wake" — until "Amy detransitioned and it all fell apart" (l. 154, 162). Second, the bugchasing with the cowboy — the slot-2 mechanism of seeking dangerous proxies for the conferral-of-womanhood the substrate refuses (the cowboy's HIV as the "analogue to a cis woman's life changer", l. 142). Third, and load-bearing, Reese's willingness to disappear from her own wish-shape so the configuration could land for someone else (l. 4736):

"If she really wanted to be a good mother, she had to admit she had been wrong. The child was everything. Reese would disappear. Ames and Katrina could have her baby if that's what it took. She experienced a moment of Solomonic self-satisfaction. Not that she knew her Bible all that well, but wasn't the true mother she who would rather give up her baby than allow it to be sawed in half?"

The slot-2 mechanism — the bearer pays cost by being willing to surrender her own claim to the configuration she most wants — is the deepest reach of the bearer's wish-shape: the willingness to disappear into the wish itself.

Slot 3 — the morning of the abortion, the trio in silence over tea

The slot-3 register is where this specimen does its load-bearing work for the engine model. The closing scene (Chapter Eleven, l. 4908-4966) is the engine's resolution. The three sit in Katrina's living room on the morning of the scheduled procedure; Reese pleads quietly (l. 4938-4940):

"'Please, Katrina,' Reese says, at length, and somewhat without segue from the small talk they had been making. 'Please can't you wait?' Katrina shakes her head. 'I already missed my chance to do it with the pill. Now they have to use a vacuum and if I wait more, dilation. The longer I wait —' She pauses and pulls the blanket over her face, so Reese thinks she might be crying, but a moment later, she pulls it back down, eyes still dry, and her face expressionless. 'I just can't take the risk. I just can't handle the uncertainty, I just can't.'"

Ames reframes the trio as their own solution (l. 4956-4962):

"'Reese, do you remember how the whole idea of the Sex and the City Problem for you is that no generation of trans women has solved the Sex and the City Problem, and that every generation of cis women has to reinvent it?' 'Yes.' 'Well, what if this is our solution? Maybe this is so awkward and hard and without obvious precedent because we're trying to imagine our own solution, to reinvent something for ourselves, whatever kind of' — he pauses, and looks down at his own feet, the boots and jeans he wears — 'whatever kind of women we are.' 'Maybe,' Katrina says."

The slot-3 fills at the novel's closing image (l. 4966):

"Katrina gets up to make some tea. The kettle boils, and she pours out three cups and returns with them. The three of them sip in silence as the clock ticks. They are together, and miles from each other, their thoughts turning to themselves, then turning to the baby, each in her own way contemplating how her tenuous rendition of womanhood has become dependent upon the existence of this little person, who is not yet, and yet may not be."

The slot-3 register — the bearer's acceptance of structural suspension by another bearer's autonomous choice she must honor — IS the engine's resolution. The novel stops before the outcome by structural commitment; the reader bears the suspension as their share of the engine's resolution.

Discrimination

Vs Binnie's Nevada (recognition #10, honest-foreclosure). Binnie's Maria acknowledges her own wish-shape's mechanism (project-onto-junior-bearer) as structurally non-functional; the bearer's slot-3 act is the acknowledgment. Peters's Reese preserves her wish-shape — she still wants what she wants — and the slot-3 act is the honoring of another bearer's autonomy that suspends the engine's completion. Same primary pole (sought) at the same register (trans-women); different sub-modes by what the slot-3 names — the wish's mechanism (Binnie) vs the gating bearer's autonomy (Peters). Distinct sub-modes within the sought-pole-trans-women register; the register now admits at least two slot-3 sub-modes, both at the foreclosure-adjacent end of the spectrum.

Vs the completion-resolved register (still unwitnessed). Neither Binnie nor Peters confirms that the sought-pole-trans-women register admits a completion-resolved slot-3. Whether such a slot-3 can run in literature is still open. The hole at backings.md is narrower now (no completion specimen) but with two distinct foreclosure-adjacent sub-modes named.

Vs Hartman's non-fictional-foreclosure (legacy #6). Hartman's substrate refuses to grant the recovery; the bearer acknowledges that refusal as the resolution. Peters's substrate could in principle grant the recognition (the trio-form could form); the substrate's grant is gated by another bearer's autonomy. Different sub-modes by substrate-state (refused vs gated-by-autonomy).

Vs Butler's coerced-preservation (legacy #6). Butler's substrate enforces preservation at physical cost; the bearer's slot-3 act is the physical absorption. Peters's substrate enforces nothing; the bearer's slot-3 act is honoring another bearer's autonomy. Different sub-modes by substrate-agency.

Belonging sub-mode signal. The trio-as-chosen-family is sibling to Nelson's constructive-rather-than-joined register at the inversion: Nelson's construction holds across years; Peters's collapses before forming. The same autonomy-suspended sub-mode applies for the belonging engine within this specimen. If a future specimen confirms autonomy-suspended at a third engine, the register-class graduates to engine-orthogonal status (analogous to the honest-foreclosure register-class named at Hartman/Bechdel/Binnie).

Result

Recognition sought-pole-trans-women register slot-proven at the autonomy-suspended sub-mode. The bearer's wish-shape is preserved; the substrate's possibility is preserved; the completion is gated by another bearer's autonomy; the slot-3 fills as the bearer's honoring of the gating despite the cost.

The completion-resolved hole remains open. Peters does not close the question Binnie left open; she runs a third register entirely. The sought-pole-trans-women register now has TWO distinct foreclosure-adjacent sub-modes (Binnie's honest-foreclosure, Peters's autonomy-suspended) and ZERO completion-resolved specimens. Open question, narrower now.

Autonomy-suspended slot-3 register-class signal at two engines within one specimen (recognition spine + belonging also-runs). Engine-orthogonality claim deferred until a cross-engine specimen at a different primary engine confirms.

Sibling specimens: Nevada (sought-pole-trans-women at honest-foreclosure sub-mode), The Argonauts (belonging-as-constructive at dyad scale, completed), Tales of the City (Babycakes; Significant Others) (belonging-as-constructive at network scale, completed), Lose Your Mother (cross-engine sibling at honest-foreclosure register-class), Kindred (cross-engine sibling at coerced-preservation register-class).
